Expensive drinks when buying rounds.

Arghh! I hate buying rounds anyway. But I wish people wouldn't ask for G&T with the more expensive gin. When 3 out of six people want one. It gets a bit pricey!

I was at a funeral last week with a 'free bar' ... the family had a tab going. I couldn't believe how many people ordered a double spirit or the most expensive large wine. So rude.

£8/9 usually. More with ‘fancy’ gin

Wow!!!😮

LolaJ87 · 22/03/2024 11:22

Rounds are so pointless unless it's just 2 people. They mean you have to drink at other people's pace which is generally a bad idea. Also, I drink what I like to drink (not gin), I wouldn't pick something cheaper which will leave me with a horrible hangover just because it's cheaper in a round. If you don't like rounds, don't get in rounds!

Also if you go for dinner with a friend, and they drink and you don't, you say "let's each pay for our own" instead of paying half and feeling resentful. These things are so simple with a bit of honest communication.

Tattletwat · 22/03/2024 11:57

I only buy rounds with groups of people who drink similar drinks to me., if it's people I don't know I buy my own.

DGPP · 22/03/2024 11:59

I think don’t go out if you don’t want to do rounds. Rounds will have drinks of varying prices!

one of my biggest peeves lately is the way the hospitality industry has rebranded a G&T as a cocktail, not a spirit and mixer drink.

If you want a vodka and tonic, it can be £5/8, but for some reason getting your goblet of gin and a slice of lemon makes it a £8/12 drink in a lot of places.

I think good round etiquette should say if you know your drink is significantly pricier than the company your with then you go alone or you do a double round to others one.
If it was a split of 3 people on cocktails and 3 on pints, I’d suggest there be two rounds maybe.

I completely agree and I'm old school I want my gin in a highball glass not in the balloon glass.

Don't get me started on flavoured, my belief is a lot of people who drink flavoured gin don't actually like gin and would turn there nose up at a decent normal one

I'm glad the gin explosion is finally dieing down, it lasted longer than expected

Wellhellooooodear · 22/03/2024 12:03

I knew one cheeky cow who would have double vodka and J2O. Everyone else would share a bottle of wine. She'd never buy a round either and would calculate the bill down to the last penny. Ugh.

I once read about someone on here who, at a wedding with a free bar, bought a bottle of single malt whisky.

So did you ever call her out on it or did you just shut up and put up?

How ridiculous! There are other ways of doing it, like buying your own or having a kitty.

Welcome to the world of a beer drinker 🍺

As long as you don't drink it in bottles where a bottle barely bigger than a half pint costs the same as a draft pint. I nearly fell through the floor when I found out how much they cost in bars.

Bjorkdidit · 22/03/2024 12:51

I drink a variety of drinks (lager, cava, white or rose wine, G&T) but generally stick to lager when out because at least it lasts more than a few sips.

Those of you advocating kitties, you still have to convince the cocktail and double G&T drinkers that they need to put in more than those who drink halves of lager or soft drinks, £20 each in the pot doesn't cut it because it probably won't pay for two of their drinks but will last all night and then some for those on cheaper drinks.

Well yes of course the amount will be different. Just pay for what you intend to drink. So four half ciders, £10, four £9 cocktails, £36.

mrlistersgelfbride · 22/03/2024 13:04

Yes , stop buying rounds! I just say openly that I can't afford rounds at the start of the evening.
Problem solved! And occasionally someone else might buy you a drink anyway 😉... only kidding.
I can't be bothered with getting into debates about drinks and costs, especially when people have had a few.

I used to have a friend who found her way out of buying a round every time we went out, unfortunately after nearly 20 years of doing this it wears thin and it's one of the reasons I don't see her much these days. You buy your drinks, I'll buy mine!

jay55 · 22/03/2024 13:05

Drinks are too expensive for rounds now. Unless you're splitting a bottle of wine get your own.
Makes even less sense in a large group, as half the group won't end up spending anything.

QuestionForHelp · 22/03/2024 13:16

I honestly have no idea what gin is more expensive than other gins. Wouldn't occur to me to even think about it.

It's a basic problem with rounds. If you are worrying about the cost of different drinks, then you can't afford to be buying rounds so should just opt out.

RetroPhonics · 22/03/2024 13:18

This all sounds horribly familiar. I had a ( now ex friend) who pulled this crap for years and foolish me, never noticed and went along with it. she'd have pints to my halves and then later in the evening would switch to large ( always had to be large!)glasses of wine whilst I stuck to my halves. She drank like a fish as well so we're talking the equivalent of a whole bottle of wine and at least 5 pints. When the penny finally dropped which coincided with me being absolutely on the bones of my arse and her just having a promotion,I asked if it was ok for us to get our own that evening. Her response was interesting. She offered to buy me a meal! This to me was hugely enlightening as she clearly been aware that for over ten years she'd been taking the piss, and knew full well she'd been getting a great deal but hadn't thought in all those years to even things up with her buying the meal or buying 2 rounds to my 1 or suggesting that we get our own as I was getting the raw end of the deal. Nope, she had kept quiet. I no longer speak to her, not solely for this reason, but I saw her in a whole new light, as someone who would happily take advantage of her broke mate and have no qualms doing so.

Ifailed · 22/03/2024 13:22

My Diet Coke doesn’t not cost the same as an alcoholic drink of any type

Depends where you are. One of my locals sell draught beer at £1.99 a pint, whilst a pint of coke out of the squirty thing is £2.20

ZippedOpenMouth · 22/03/2024 13:29

Just say I'm a slow drinker so I will buy my own thanks .

GinAndJuice99 · 22/03/2024 13:32

So much easier to just buy your own drinks. Rounds lead to people drinking stupid amounts for one thing. And if I buy my own drinks I might spend £12 in a night (eg two drinks in 3 hours, plenty) whereas a round could cost £80 easy

Urgh! Missed a vital part of the story out there!! After she paid for our meal ( cheap carvery), and I'd thanked her as you do, she then went on to say ' no problem, you can get the drinks'. So we were back to me sticking to my halves whist buying her stupidly expensive large glasses of wine. So, I was no better off whilst she looked like the nice, reasonable friend who'd done me a favour.

Beautiful3 · 22/03/2024 14:52

I'd honestly buy your own. Rounds are a nightmare, they only work if you're all drinking similar drinks.

saltinesandcoffeecups · 22/03/2024 14:56

Frangipanyoul8r · 22/03/2024 06:53

Take their order and get the cheaper gin. I bet they don’t even taste the difference. If they complain say “oh sorry I forgot”.

They will on the morning when they have a hangover from bar rail gin ☹️

Marzipan23 · 22/03/2024 15:19

oh my god I couldn't agree more! I drink lager and my friends drink wine, a round costs me a bloody fortune and I know my pint is nearly half the price of a glass of wine. I just dont do rounds anymore, dont like being tied into drinking at the same pace as everyone else and hate forking out for someones drink thats double the cost of mine!
