How often do you wipe skirting boards/woodwork?

I probably average once a week for all rooms.

We have 3 dogs and although we live on a quiet cul de sac there is a busy road and farms behind us. Causes quite a dusty house.

I also wipe doors down (white gloss) weekly.

We bought our house as a do-er upper (bought thinking it was unliveable and had to be done immediately) but then life got in the way. The grubbiness was awful so now the house is fully redecorated I am a little OTT.

I feel like people do it less than me cause we’re inherently messy qbut not sure.

I hoover the skirting boards perhaps twice a year.

I never wipe doors as a routine - if I see muckyness I clean that bit.

Are you heavy smokers or something do get dirty doors?

(BTW - your doors will yellow whatever you do as they're glossed. White Eggshell doesn't yellow.)

OohLaFiatMultipla · 21/03/2024 10:54

If they look dirty which seems rare. Don't have dogs though, I do use the hoover pipe to run along the tops once a week

Causei · 21/03/2024 10:55

I could never only do it only twice a year! Every time I wipe each week there is dust on the cloth.

Non smokers.

I give them a quick whisk with my fluffy duster when I notice they look dusty (probs about once a month).

Timeforabiscuit · 21/03/2024 10:56

When it needs it (like a spill or accident), or if an infectious illness is running through the house - I would love to do a full on spring clean, but don't have the time/energy/resource/priority to do it - we do have a cleaner helping though.

Why don't you just use a hoover attachment?

Cuppachuchu · 21/03/2024 10:57

I do wipe the door handles regularly with anti bac though, because germy hands.

OhGingleBells · 21/03/2024 10:57

I do the hall/kitchen regularly, everywhere else only occasionally. I do hoover the tops of the skirting board most times I hoover but actual wiping/scrubbing far less frequently.

Doing it every week is probably much more efficient as they’ll be far easier to clean than months of welded on grubbiness.

I get rid of marks on doors as soon as I see them and clean the fiddly bits every few weeks. I live with people who seem to open and close doors by pressing their hands into the area around the handle rather than using the actual handle!!

whyismysoupcold · 21/03/2024 10:59

Oh, hardly ever. I occasionally sweep them if I notice dirt, but most of the time they're dusty 🤷‍♀️

Desecratedcoconut · 21/03/2024 11:00

I don't have any pets and so can get away with just wafting the hoover attachment over the skirting every couple of weeks but actually getting on my hand and knees and wiping it down with a cloth? Two or three times a year maybe?

I clean the handles of the doors regularly, at least once a week while cleaning a room but I only wipe down the woodwork as needed or every couple of months.

UnNiddeRides · 21/03/2024 11:00

I never wipe the skirting boards, though I do hoover them if they get very dusty.

I only wash woodwork if there’s a dirty mark.

SiobhanSharpe · 21/03/2024 11:00

Huh? What -- Is this a thing?

Causei · 21/03/2024 11:01

This preoccupation definitely comes from the fact that I once spent an entire day scrubbing skirting boards before our house was decorated. Going around with a quick wipe (don’t even look really) seeems like a luxury

Hmm no reason just personal preference to use a microfibre/wipe.

Clean skirting boards can really lift a room - even if they didn’t look particularly dirty before!

Desecratedcoconut · 21/03/2024 11:03

Well, yeah, if you are going to paint it then it needs a proper clean with sugar soap and that's a pita. But you'd ruin the gloss work if you did that just for cleaning.

Causei · 21/03/2024 11:04

I didn’t bother doing the stair skirting boards for maybe 4 months and they were absolutely filthy.

I knew my family were mess/dust creating monsters

About once a year

maudelovesharold · 21/03/2024 11:06

I just hoover them when I’m doing the floors. If I notice dirty marks, I’ll clean them with a wet cloth. I’ve never understood dry cloth dusting. That just moves the dust around, surely, even if a minute amount sticks to the cloth?

Cheeesus · 21/03/2024 11:06

Does it actually matter if they’re dusty though? Do you have dust allergies?

I only do mine when I can see they’re dusty from head height.

Causei · 21/03/2024 11:07

We’ve stayed in airbnbs for months at a time and noticed how much less dusting we’ve had to do (dogs came with). Think this house is weird.

Do you have new carpet down?

My fear is that they will get caked on. And I will then have to spend a lot of time getting them back to good nick.

Do you have new carpet down?

Yes. Whole house was re carpeted (wood in reception rooms).

OP posts:
Desecratedcoconut · 21/03/2024 11:13

New carpet can shed, maybe your dust is compounded by small carpet fragments - is it worse in the carpeted rooms?
