AIBU to feel that some parents just want their children at Uni even if its a BS degree

Hello
I come from a background/culture where education is seen as very important and going to a university is a must (My parents came to England in 1962)

Yes, more and more jobs are seeking degrees and often even when not necessary. There are many professions where you must have a degree to join the course training

However, what I and my family call BS degrees, to name but a few

Arts
Studio Fine arts
Arth History
Business studies
Exercise Science
Fashion

I cant see what jobs they will get as there must be other routes, less intensive and extensive to get the job they want

When I've talked about mickey-mouse degrees at parties etc and not be aware that some parents children or they may have studied them, they start to defend the indefensible.
The biggest bS degree is 'Politics' - WTH!! Sadly, we know a few people whose children have done that and ended up running the family shop/business - total waste of a degree

There are other degrees just as crappy - they should be banned IMO

AIBU to think these degrees are a waste of time and often do not aid the person into a job in that field?

Music is a prerequisite for what my dd does!

I did business (well called commerce) and several of my classmates are partners in top accounting firms, a couple are on the board of ftse companies ... I think it's a decent degree!

"Commerce" is quiet different to "business studies" and even I know that.

I suspect the OP went to the Univesity of Life, but sadly failed the grammar exam.

HighLlamas · 19/03/2024 22:14

OP, given that you mis-spelled your own username in a previous, and equally wacky, Mn existence, I don’t think you should be looking down on Arts graduates. Isn’t the PoW, on whom you appear to have a giant crush, an art history graduate?

mitogoshi · 19/03/2024 22:16

@DistinguishedSocialCommentator

Well the degree I did was renamed business studies a few years after I graduated, same degree

Oh boy!
Is this another Mumsnet wind-up?
IMHO politics should be a compulsory subject at school. Tell me how you think it's a waste of time as a degree!!
Every adult should have to vote as well.
We get the government we deserve because no one actually votes.
Don't answer, I'm going to bed.
I hope this is a joke.

"Wind-up" - Because you disagree with what I believe in as do many others I know.

Can I safely assume you have one of the degrees I mentioned?

I posted a few minutes ago I actually forgot to add the biggest waste of time degree, Media Studies

My point is many of the listed degrees, very hard to get a job in that field - you agree?

DH did a business degree and now earns 400K a year.
I did a proper professional degree and earn 50K.

Yes similarly most of the IT Sales guys at work did Business degrees, many at non RG ex polys !! Shock, horror ! and are earning 500K plus a year in their early thirties. Whereas I was earning about 50K a year at that age with my Science Bsc and Masters from 2 separate top 5 RG unis. DP and I earn pretty much the same, although he dropped out of uni after a term and I have a Masters.

I don't think things are as black and white as you are goadily claiming.

I know of people back in my motherland that are "tattooists" that have no degree, no education and make money, but not "good money" as like here in England, most people will not have a tattoo.

I could do a tattoo as could other people if they wanted to, so does not require a degree.

Yeah but you would probably be shit at it. The person who went further to get an art degree has studied and knows how to make it beautiful. But I don't think you care as you mention that most people won't have a tattoo which I take in tone of your other posts that you probably look down on people with tattoos too

Tiswa · 19/03/2024 22:17

But the degrees you mentioned aren’t on the list in that article. Plus I think sometimes it is about experiencing life as a University Student and putting off real life (particularly if you end up working there after you have left!)

Now I know sometimes grammar/punctuation can get lost (and I often do which given I am an editor is shocking) but given the point you are trying to make about your education - the use of capitals and full points would not go amiss!

Busbygirl · 19/03/2024 22:18

Do more and more jobs need degrees?
Lots of high paying IT jobs for instance don’t. Lots of these types of jobs you need to be super intelligent for but don’t necessarily need a degree.

are you saying I'm not entitled to post a thread in what I feel is true?

No one is twisting your arm to read/post!!

I'm sure you have some opinions that I don't agree with with

In real life not everyone agrees with everyone, you know that, don't you?

You and the others have missed the point in my OP, ie my background and how parents expect there children to have a degree and failing to note that some degrees are a waste of time as they lack jobs/etc

A degree in pissing off people.

Well it's "their children" but you do you!! So much for your love for education.

There is no point in your OP. It's just foolish and it makes you look like an idiot.

AIstolemylunch · 19/03/2024 22:22

There ar lots of people in IT in their 40s and 50s who don't have degrees because it used to be the case that you didn't need one as you could work your way up from the help desk etc. I dont think that is really true nowaday, now that we're competing against people from other countries who tend to have degrees. I think anyone of uni age now would need a degree or be on an apprenticeship to get a well paid IT job now. I work for an IT company and a degree or 15y + experience is the first hurdle.

Runnerinthenight · 19/03/2024 22:23

vodkaredbullgirl · 19/03/2024 22:20

A degree in pissing off people.

A degree of ignorance!

Peaceandquietwithmydog · 19/03/2024 22:24

OP your written English is terrible. So many spelling mistakes and poor grammar! Am guessing you never got to Uni !!

SD1978 · 19/03/2024 22:24

I got a BS degree which in its own led into absolutely nothing, and there are plenty of them that are similar, the faux outrage that it's not true is utter BS. Yes there are 'designer degrees' which have little to no applicable skills, but you've got one. I think due to cost of living we are living away a bit from that, but they do seem to be creating more degrees which if your lucky one person may get a job in, but they could have gone down a more classic route for the same result

DistinguishedSocialCommentator · 19/03/2024 22:24

Runnerinthenight · 19/03/2024 22:19

You expect me to take the biat?
No matter what I post, FM's like you and the others will do a 'Royal family' on me, IE, not believe me, so there is no point,

I will give you a clue, its not one in the OP, nor the funniest one IMO, Media studies.

A degree in pissing off people.

I disagree. I've posted a thread on AIBU and IMO and others I know, the degrees in my OP and Media studies often lead to no job in that sector and people end up doing something else, so why waste your time?

I always advised my nephews/nices/etc/etc, only go to uni if your are up to it and the degree you are going to take lands you in a position where it would be very easy to get a job in the line of work they are studying for.

So you have one of the degrees I've mentioned?

OP posts:
ghostyslovesheets · 19/03/2024 22:28

Yeah media studies - what a joke - I mean it's not like we live in an era of 24 hour programs, huge media platforms, social media being key to marketing, social media engagement careers, PR being a huge industry, online news platforms or anything like that - I mean 'media' is hardly a booming industry

ghostyslovesheets · 19/03/2024 22:29

What are your careers guidance qualifications OP? Level 6 or 7?

BewaretheIckabog · 19/03/2024 22:29

Has someone asked an AI Bot what to post about uni and higher education on Mumsnet?

OP’s parents came to the UK in the sixties but no way are these posts from a native speaker.

Very odd.
