Did any of the old wives tale bring on labour?

I'm getting induced in 2 days and have ordered curry tonight. I've been eating dates for a few weeks and dtd yesterday.

Did you try anything to bring on labour and did it work?

I really don't want to be induced 😞

Breast pump!! Not an old wives tale as such as it has scientific backing, it stimulates your hormones

Sweep for dd1

I had a leg massage, light pressure, around the calves and ankles and feet... and whooops in labour 12 hours later.

Same, for both of mine.

paranoidmumdroid1 · 19/03/2024 18:53

I don't think sex is an old wives tale as such. There's a chemical in sperm that helps the cervix prepare for labour.

You absolutely can refuse, they will say 'our policy' etc but it's your baby and body. I went to 42+4 with my last and it was a very fast, straightforward labour in the end. Baby was healthy and a good weight. They weren't happy with me and put the pressure on but to hell with them. There's a fantastic group on Facebook called Ten Month Mamas, very informative and supportive. Hope you get the labour you want OP.

Such dangerous advice. You have absolutely no idea of this woman's obstetric history or of fetal wellbeing.
Induction isn't just offered on a whim.

lavenderlou · 19/03/2024 19:03

I ate most of a fresh pineapple and went into labour a few hours later. The heartburn was pretty bad though!

hopefulthoughts · 19/03/2024 19:19

Nipple stimulation is the only one with any scientific backing- use a breast pump, it releases hormones that can trigger labour

Sorry but wanted to respectfully disagree with this. I’ve had an appt with a midwife today (am overdue with a third) and as of today, my hospital wants everyone to be booked in for an induction between 40 + 5 and 41 weeks. This seems absolutely ridiculous to me where there is no medical indication for one.

Of course where there are other reasons then you’d want to consider to induction, but they are now offered (/pressured) for everyone.

Knew someone would have a problem with my experience, but do you know what, I'd do it again and advise anyone who would prefer to let things happen naturally to look at their options, which include refusing induction if pregnancy has been otherwise straightforward. You have no idea of her history either but surely you can deduce that she doesn't want to be induced? It's a scary process to some and sometimes it helps to know that you're not alone in not wanting it. Why don't you focus on answering the OP instead of picking fault with someone who hasn't done what you would have.

DC1 - I had a sweep and a curry on the same day and went into labour that night
DC2 - sex

LoftyTurtle · 19/03/2024 19:47

I woke up to the sound of my dog vomiting and went into labour not long after, maybe find an ill dog? 😆

TheShellBeach · 19/03/2024 19:48

You can refuse to be induced!

paristotokyo · 19/03/2024 19:48

Nope I was very overdue Smile

Oopsadaisysgranny · 19/03/2024 19:49

Having sex even if it’s the last thing you fancy worked 3 times !!!

TheChosenTwo · 19/03/2024 19:51

One day away from induction and I tried taking a raspberry leaf tea capsule, went into labour about 3 hours later.
Will never know if that’s what did it or if he would have arrived at the same time without it!

Blobfishy · 19/03/2024 19:51

We DTD just 8 hours before baby was born! Don't know for sure but I think it helped. I had a really fast 4 hour labour and it was nice and easy too (still tore but I was none the wiser😄)

menopausalmare · 19/03/2024 19:55

A curry and sex. Ha! no prizes for guessing who came up with that idea.

FloofyBird · 19/03/2024 19:56

Sex worked here too

BirthdayRainbow · 19/03/2024 19:57

Baby was late. I had curry, rhubarb and custard for dinner. Next day I went on a walk and had more rhubarb and custard. Went into labour that night. Baby was six days overdue when born

Franker · 19/03/2024 19:58

Clary sage oil baths 👍👍

Castor oil. I found a recipe online for someone that had done it. It was something like 2 tbsp mixed in a glass of orange juice, repeat after 4xhours if nothing. But check online yourself! But it wasn't one of the crazy 'neck half a bottle' ones.

It was exactly like you, to avoid being induced, and it worked- labour next day BUT very painful from the start (no slow build up, strong contractions for 13h) and baby had meconium in water - very possibly unrelated and she was totally fine but it made them monitor us much more than I wanted and it may have been the castor oil (it's a laxative).

Castor oil is absolutely not recommended now.

FionnulaTheCooler · 19/03/2024 20:00

Scrubbing the bath and the kitchen floor worked for me. The nesting had properly kicked in and I went into labour that night.

Killerqueenie · 19/03/2024 20:01

I had sex at 38+5 in the afternoon and started cramping a few hours later. I wasn't trying to start labour but I also tried collecting some colostrum not long after having sex as I had GD and it can help with regulating baby's blood sugar levels (its safe to do this after 37/38 weeks). By 9pm my waters had broken.

excessivescreentime · 19/03/2024 20:02

I dunno. I had some acupuncture sessions and did go into labour (on the eve of my induction date 😅)... but I mean, hard to judge cause and effect! Presumably my daily likehood of spontaneous labour at 42 weeks preggo was pretty high...

GOOD LUCK! Hope you dodge induction

ShowOfHands · 19/03/2024 20:02

These things mostly don't work. People will coincidentally do these things and have a baby but it's not causal. Actual research shows that there's next to nothing you can do. For every woman who had sex and then had a baby, there are several who had sex and didn't. Studies show sex might actually prevent labour in fact.

It always makes me laugh that people, for example, "had sex and then labour started the next day". No mention of any of the other things they did in the 15hrs beforehand.

I genuinely ate Jaffa cakes on the day labour started with both of mine. Maybe try that?
