Sheree Spencer prison boss footage....

Beating and abusing her husband...for years...shown on BBC1 this morning... omg I know this happens mostly where males abuse females. But this was hard to watch and what's more concerning even is this type of mentality of effectively a police officer / prison boss. I'm shocked ... I had another thread on about the police before and it derailed and went into a rabbit hole... I'm not sure what my AIBU is here but it was just awful and she only got 4 years ?? Is this right for domestic violence ? Seems very light to me !

This was one of my very good school tried.. wtf happened to her?

tulippa · 18/03/2024 23:41

Domestic violence perpetrated by men tends to attract short sentences so I guess it's only fair the other way round. Generally speaking - I'm not familiar with the case you've mentioned.

Lumpalicious · 18/03/2024 23:43

She’s not a police officer, not sure why you are suggesting a similar mentality. And she sure as hell doesn’t represent all prison staff. Sometimes people are just cunts. Simple as that.

The abuse is abhorrent but the outrage against this is galling given how much more often this happens to women. However, shock, horror, it's happened to a man and makes many headlines.

This

How many women are battered every day, yet one man is filmed being beaten and the whole country hears about it

Lumpalicious · 18/03/2024 23:53

If telling one man’s story encourages others in a similar position to come forward then that’s something to support.

Agreeing that he’s been a victim of horrific abuse doesn’t take anything away from other female victims of domestic abuse. There is enough horror and empathy to go around.

Hopingitsahornyfinger · 18/03/2024 23:57

Except there sadly really isn't @Lumpalicious - no one seems to give a shit when it happens to women; no front page / multiple news articles; painfully short prison sentences (if convicted at all); still have access to the kids. It's all truly horrendous but I'm not seeing outrage anywhere.

ButterflyKu · 19/03/2024 00:01

Exactly. People’s responses are always telling in situations like these. Yes men abuse women everyday and there’s some women who probably abuse men everyday. It’s still evil and disgusting each way

HelloMiss · 19/03/2024 00:03

Not heard of this

Was she a prison governor?

This.

I'm a female who suffered domestic violence from my then husband in the 1980's. I'm fully in support of all victims of domestic abuse - men, women and children - finding justice. I didn't as quite frankly I didn't have the courage Richard has shown in coming forward - I thank him for doing so, in the hope that he will enable anyone else to seek help. To be fair, my case happened in a different era. My husband was also a serving police officer, and police attitudes to domestic violence were very different - particularly in protecting their own, sadly!

Whether 4 years in prison (out in 2?!) is enough in this case is questionable. That woman caused untold damage to her husband and to their 3 innocent children who saw so much.

Hopingitsahornyfinger · 19/03/2024 00:08

I agree with all of this & hope it helps others, but i do wish it drew the same outrage when it happens to women & find it galling that it doesn't.

HelloMiss · 19/03/2024 00:12

She's in an open prison

So she's out and about and I believe works in a cafe

Nothing would have happened to your husband, he'd have been protected. My DV was in the 2000's and despite a confession from my husband after he was arrested, the CPS said "not in the public interest", so dropped it without taking him to court. The DV unit and myself were outraged. Basically, I didn't matter.

I have seen many similar stories of DA related crimes against women reported in the media. However, victims of DA are entitled to anonymity which can at times make it difficult to share all relevant details when reporting on a case.

Richard has chosen to waive his anonymity, presumably to encourage more victims in a similar position to come forward. This has enabled the media coverage seen today.

DA is DA. We are the first to complain when men try to detract from a woman’s lived experience by bemoaning the lack of attention on them. We can and should be better than this.

TakeOnFlea · 19/03/2024 00:46

Are you saying she was a governor at a prison?

HelloMiss · 19/03/2024 00:48

It reads as if she's a governor....

She's not.

Probably never faced up to a prisoner on the wings in her life!

TakeOnFlea · 19/03/2024 00:54

No landing dust on those boots. In fact, never had boots. I've googled better now. Turns out she's some fucking pen pusher who fluttered her eyelashes at Boris once or twice 🙄

I fucking despair

I'm sorry you had to go through that. I hope you're now living a better life and that you have found peace and contentment as I have. 💐

I don't disagree- I think the issue is that it's such a normal occurrence that it can't possibly make the headlines every day.... and the main thing here is that the victim filmed it and released the footage. I think it gives insight into how violent and bad it really can be...for any victim male or female and if if helps a few people escape this violence then that's a great outcome. I was shocked not only because its happened to a man... but because I've bever thought a woman can be that scary and awful.... which leads be to think that men abusing women are even more scary .... I'm shocked to see that its not that easy to escape ( he was physically able to overpower her but didn't)... so regardless of the sex of the abuser, it was shocking to see a glimpse of how emotional abuse can cripple you. It was shocking as you hardly ever see abuse bring released to public and I think most victims are too scared to release anything as they fear for their lives...lastly I was shocked because in a position of power comes great responsibility and see abused it in a horrific way 😢

She's not in any way a 'prison boss' though, is she?

She was a project manager in the Ministry of Justice.
