So how do people flirt nowadays then 🤷🏻‍♀️

I was watching Gogglebox the other day and two of the younger women/girls (early 20’s maybe 🤷🏻‍♀️) were watching the part in One day where the two main characters bump into each other at the Uni ball/dance. They look at each other quite intensely, smile, flirt etc…normal stuff really, nice and romantic. The two girls watching were really confused and asked what they were doing and what kind of flirting was this etc, they did seem v confused! I didn’t find it odd at all and it reminded me of being in a teen in my 90’s and meeting guys in pubs/clubs and having similar flirtations, it was great 😂
Did make me wonder why it was so confusing to them and how flirting differs these days then with younger people? What do they do?

Usually guys send a dick pic to show interest these days 🤷🏻‍♀️ (I have had them sent and that was always a ‘block’ from me).

Istilllikecelebbigbro · 17/03/2024 22:35

@BashfulClam But does no one lock eyes at a bar/club, meet through friends at a party etc anymore?

TuliLily · 17/03/2024 22:35

Of course they do, just because two people were confused doesn't mean that speaks for every young person? 🫤

Istilllikecelebbigbro · 17/03/2024 22:37

@TuliLily Of course not, but I noticed the other two younger sisters also watching seemed to find it strange/quite cringeworthy, the younger people just seemed to have a different reaction

No idea, I’m old and married now.

JacquesHarlow · 17/03/2024 22:40

No idea @Istilllikecelebbigbro , but if I wanted to know, I’d go to the Chat or Relationships forum… 🤷🏽‍♀️

rayro2 · 17/03/2024 22:41

I cringed but only because I found the girl really awkward

Gowlett · 17/03/2024 22:42

So thankful I’ve never received a dick pic in my life…

rayro2 · 17/03/2024 22:42

(And I’m in my late 30’s)

Okay thread police?😂

RageAgainstTheCoffeeMachine · 17/03/2024 22:43

Are you talking about those two thick young lasses?
They probably think receiving a dick pic is akin to swearing undying love.

Is that a thing people say on here @BarbieDangerous … “thread police”? Is that funny to you?

Or is there any point actually having an “AIBU” section, when a big swathe of Mumsnet just treat it as “Mumsnet” in its entirety.

WhateverMate · 17/03/2024 22:51

If you're talking about the two girls with the big grey dog in between them, their whole TV persona is to be spectacularly thick.

I think they think it's cute or something?

Istilllikecelebbigbro · 17/03/2024 22:57

@JacquesHarlow Come on 😂
Don’t let it bother you

@RageAgainstTheCoffeeMachine Yes them, didn’t really want to put it like that 🙈

Nowadays I believe you must ask consent to approach their personal space, then ask if you may engage in flirting.

Istilllikecelebbigbro · 17/03/2024 23:03

@KattyBoomBoom95 I wouldn’t be surprised…in case you offend anyone, do you also have to ask their pronouns?

Most probably. 🤣

I was actually going to start a similar thread, after reading one about chatting up at the gym etc., which is apparently a complete no-no. I'm not talking about harassment or sexual comments, obviously, just friendly chit-chat that might lead to a date.

I'm old and married now, but when I was young I had boyfriends that I met at train stations, or sitting on a bench, or even walking along the street Grin as well as the usual ones that developed from friendship-groups and colleagues.

Is it all OLD now? How do young people (or any people, come to that) get dates?

CruCru · 17/03/2024 23:08

They check each other out on Instagram.

Did you want the thread title to say, ‘AIBU in thinking that this is how people flirt?’ Most posts on this board can be posted on AIBU without explicitly stating it…. AIBU also gets the most amount of traffic so it’s quite clear why this board is most people’s go too

Istilllikecelebbigbro · 17/03/2024 23:18

@DuesToTheDirt Same 😂It was v fun and natural, I loved the moment you caught each others eye or someone would approach you…ahh miss it

OP posts:
Ace56 · 17/03/2024 23:26

@JacquesHarlow Are you quite new to Mumsnet? It’s well known that people post all sorts of things on AIBU because it by far has the most traffic. A lot of times posting in other places will get you little to no response. So yes, pointing out that the thread doesn’t strictly have an ‘AIBU’ (god forbid!) will get you labelled as the ‘thread police’ (again, if you’re new to mumsnet you might not have heard of this).

To the OP, yes I think flirting is very different these days. No one really meets randomly or bumps into each other at the pub/a party/shops any more - it’s mostly through online dating or work, that’s how most people I know who are recently dating met each other (I’m early thirties).

Istilllikecelebbigbro · 17/03/2024 23:29

@Ace56 But why doesn’t that happen? After a few drinks and dressed up etc, isn’t a night out a natural place, does no one notice/interact with each other anymore?
