How much support with personal care would you expect a 10 year old to need?

Do you still:

Clip nails
Help with showers
Supervise teeth brushing
Remind to wear deodorant
Can they wipe themselves properly (no stained underwear)

Would you still expect to do these things for a 10 year old with no learning difficulties.

She just doesn’t want to. Every morning is a battle to get her to clean her teeth, brush her hair etc. she has no pride in her appearance at all. She doesn’t wipe herself properly. And it’s not because she can’t, because she’s very capable and very accomplished in other things (things she wants to do!) but her hygiene is just revolting.

I don’t think it is uncommon for kids to be lazy little soap dodgers. They just have other things they would rather do.

I clip nails and remind them to do the rest. They do brush teeth every day without asking but would go days without a shower or hair wash if I didn’t say anything.

Keep reminding her for now but I’m sure once she goes up to secondary school there will be a bit more peer pressure to sort herself out. The bum wiping bit I would try to get on top of though as she may end up sore Can you get her some wipes for after a poo?

I wouldnt want a 10yo to have 'pride in her appearance', to me that's seems like a bizarre turn of phrase for a child.

Your tone makes it sound like you hate your DD.

She will be picking up on that.

What a load of bloody nonsense. It doesn’t sound anything like the OP hates their child.

Frustrated that their child doesn’t care if they smell, have furry teeth and leave skiddy pants for them- yes.

There is nothing wrong with encouraging your child to be self aware and responsible for their own personal hygiene.

My dd 12 can do all those things but she chooses not to because she’s lazy and it’s not important to her. Like you op it’s a struggle every morning. She plays cello and will not cut her nails and insists she can do vibrato with her talons. Therefore I have to cut them for her. I have to brush her hair, push her in the shower, check her teeth and remind her to use deodorant. Her brother was completely different at that age.

let’s hope things improve when they get a bit older but I suspect we will fighting and complaining about other issue then! 😂

9 year old 10 in August does all of them herself except deodorant as she doesn't need that yet. Sometimes I'll help wash and brush her hair as it's really thick and she can't get all the knots out.

Applescruffle · 18/03/2024 13:27

Prompting only for most of it, but he will often take himself off for a bat or shower. I don't do any of it for him

BobbyBiscuits · 18/03/2024 13:31

Ive not known many 10yo that need that level of supervision. But I guess if there's going through a shower avoidance, stinky phase. I would think that too much input would make them less likely to do it themselves? Once someone needs deodorant they're approaching puberty and they'll probably start going mad for grooming and hogging the bathroom soon enough.

Fizbosshoes · 18/03/2024 14:23

DS is 14, I don't do any of these although until about a year ago he needed a lot of reminders that showering was daily routine and not a punishment!
I'm not convinced he wears deodorant every day, even now ( because I am never asked to replace/buy it rather than he smells!)

AlaskaThunderfuckHiiiiiiiii · 18/03/2024 14:28

Both my 10yo DS and 8yo DD can shower themselves, DS needs deodorant as is nearly through puberty, I clip nails and clean teeth as my eldest DD never used to do them properly and she ended up with rotten back teeth so I am fastidious with their teeth now considering the state of dental care in this country I want to prevent as much as possible so they brush then I brush. Toileting no issues although I do need to continually remind DS to aim down the toilet and put the seat down! I’ll crack it one of these days 😂

I'm amazed so many kids are so lazy with this. Both my dc would be mortified at the thought of going into school and smelling bad

Disasterclass · 18/03/2024 14:47

My DD used to ask for help with some of these at 10. She often struggled with getting all the soap out when hair washing and needed quite a lot of reminders to have a wash/ brush teeth.

At 12 she's a totally different kettle of fish , wants to have clean hair and not smell but also wants privacy so wouldn't want help anyway. This age is a big change in terms of caring about what peers think etc so it's likely things will change

Marblessolveeverything · 18/03/2024 14:52

My ten year old has been doing these for a long time. Before clipping he would have used emery board. Probably about 7+.

Deodorant he has used a natural one since about 8 years old. I would be concerned about a child 5+ not able to wipe properly that is basic hygiene.
