People who don’t carry their bank cards with them

Auburngal · 16/03/2024 14:19

I was in Sainsbury’s this morning and systems are down. No contactless, chip n pin taking ages to go through. Unable to buy gift cards, mobile top up vouchers.

Systems going down like this happen not very often but when they do it’s awful.

On the self scan next to me a woman screamed at the manager on why she can’t pay on her mobile.

Why do many people don’t carry their bank cards anymore? The cards don’t weigh much. Plus if the contactless payment system goes down, hopefully their card will go through via chip n pin. Also they won’t look like idiots either. No sympathy for these.

Regarding contactless payments- sometimes your bank, NOT the retailer etc asks you to do a CnP payment as part of security. “I dunno my PIN”. You can change your PIN to any number you want (not 1234, 1111) at any ATM under PIN services.

Interesting question. The thing is, though, that because of cars and being easy to travel to places like out of town retail parks, it's meant that more local shops and other facilities that were within walking distance have now closed down, meaning longer walks to those that remained open, meaning fewer journeys are now easily possible by foot. So, a kind of circular argument really.

20-30 years ago, you could, if you wanted to, walk to local shops, but now most "corner" shops have gone, you'd have to walk a lot further to your "nearest" shops! So it's not really a like for like comparison.

It's also less safer to walk around as there are less pairs of eyes 'on the ground' and if you're driving you're probably too busy watching for potholes/speedbumps etc to be safeguarding anyone as you go along.

Another circular argument there.

Should we still walk everywhere or do cars make us lazy

Yes cars have made us lazier, less fit and the environment is struggling too!

Surely that depends where you live?

Exactly, but it hasn't stopped people embracing them - that was in response to a pro cash poster claiming cards make us lazier

Not sure where you’re looking, but it isn’t £8. Having looked on their website it’s £25 per month on 30 day rolling, reduced to £22.50 if you sign up for 12 months. No mention of tethering allowance or data roaming so going to assume they’re not included. It’s no better than anywhere else tbh.

Roaming is included on Lebara. You can tether to any phone and use your usual data allowance, no separate allowance needed.

BobnLen · 20/03/2024 16:53

I looked at Lebara but it's Vodaphone like Asda mobile so I stick with Tesco which is O2, it depends which is best in your area

BobnLen · 20/03/2024 17:06

snowmichael · 20/03/2024 12:03

If it's old, why are you paying anything for the phone? Surely it's paid off now?
And obviously £10/month is excessive for just a calls/texts/data package (Lebara is under £5/month)

Where is this, I can't see it, just value plans which are probably no use, can you link so others can take advantage too

But it isn’t cheaper……….

BobnLen · 20/03/2024 21:15

@snowmichael where is the Lebara under £5 or even £8 for unlimited data, you practically said people were fools for paying more, I'm still waiting for that link.

I didn't mention price. I was correcting your assumption re roaming.

Which would be great if it was the amazing offer that was suggested, but turns out it’s just like all the others 🤣 oh well. We nearly had a good deal ha!

NoWordForFluffy · 20/03/2024 22:18

Cheapest unlimited data I can find is £15 on ID Mobile and £16 on Smarty.

But no, Lebara isn't the price a PP claimed!

Interesting, I’ll look into those! 👍🏻

Bjorkdidit · 21/03/2024 08:19

Check if you need unlimited data before paying for it. I pay £7 a month for 12 Gb and don't use anywhere near all of it, but got it on some sort of deal which meant it was only a pound a month more than a much smaller allowance like 2/3 Gb that I'd probably go over from time to time.

NoWordForFluffy · 21/03/2024 08:34

That's why I got 21GB, @Bjorkdidit, as the £7.95 for that wasn't much more in cost than far less data. It's useful for office days / day trips / holidays to have more than needed.

BobnLen · 21/03/2024 09:29

Yes, many don't need unlimited, I get 30gb from Tesco for £11 and often use it all week, tethering my iPad in the caravan, downloading or streaming some TV each day and find 30gb is plenty for a week in the caravan and other general use when out and about at home.

"just value plans which are probably no use"
What judgement are you using to come to that conclusion?
Lebara website https://www.lebara.co.uk/en/best-sim-only-deals.html shows the £5 plan, and I keep getting emails from them to upgrade to the £8 unlimited plan

I can’t see it and why did you say less than £5 was unlimited as it clearly isn’t. 5 gb is not unlimited

BobnLen · 21/03/2024 11:16

Did you miss the 2 off, £25 not £5 @snowmichael

Bjorkdidit · 21/03/2024 11:20

Moneysaving Expert has a whole section on this, with guidance about picking the right network, of which there are only 4 main ones, which all the cheap providers just piggy back onto.

They have a deal for 50 Gb pm, which surely should be enough for anyone, that's effectively under £5 a month if you sign up for 12 months (they include the £25 Amazon voucher in the calculation, but that's as good as cash to most people).

snowmichael · 21/03/2024 11:27

BobnLen · 21/03/2024 11:12

I can’t see it and why did you say less than £5 was unlimited as it clearly isn’t. 5 gb is not unlimited

  1. It is often 50% off for the first few months

  2. Mine is actually £4.99 (don't know when that changed to £5 for new customers) for 5GB. I get frequent - monthly, at least, sometimes more - offers to upgrade to unlimited data for £8. As I never use all of my 5GB, I don't bother (I'd be paying £3 for nothing)

  3. I never said less than £5 was unlimited
As your reading comprehension is zero, I will ignore you henceforth

BobnLen · 21/03/2024 11:27

The poster with the so called cheap not cheap deals was mocking others. That was the problem. Most would go to MSE to look

You said, rather condescendingly, that £10 per month was “obviously” excessive. It isn’t. At all.

You then stated that unlimited data was £8 per month. Again, it isn’t. Just because you’ve (apparently) been offered some kind of upgrade is anecdotal and irrelevant.

No one has poor comprehension, stop trying to insult people just because you’re incorrectly correcting people.

People should carry cash.

For a supermarket shop? That could be £200. I don’t think many people have that amount of cash on them routinely on the off chance the card readers are down.
