People who don’t carry their bank cards with them

Auburngal · 16/03/2024 14:19

I was in Sainsbury’s this morning and systems are down. No contactless, chip n pin taking ages to go through. Unable to buy gift cards, mobile top up vouchers.

Systems going down like this happen not very often but when they do it’s awful.

On the self scan next to me a woman screamed at the manager on why she can’t pay on her mobile.

Why do many people don’t carry their bank cards anymore? The cards don’t weigh much. Plus if the contactless payment system goes down, hopefully their card will go through via chip n pin. Also they won’t look like idiots either. No sympathy for these.

Regarding contactless payments- sometimes your bank, NOT the retailer etc asks you to do a CnP payment as part of security. “I dunno my PIN”. You can change your PIN to any number you want (not 1234, 1111) at any ATM under PIN services.

I always have my purse with me. I always think it’s a good idea to have id on me. But in the scenario here, people with a bank card could go and get cash if chip and pin wasn’t working either. Those with only a phone can’t do that. I went into sainsburys, and just used chip and pin and it worked fine.
so there was no stress for me, no going elsewhere, no worries at all. I just did exactly what I’d planned to do, paid for it and left.
i always have a few quid cash on me aswell to be honest. I don’t understand this travel light thing, you’re in a shop buying something you’ll need to carry anyway 🤷🏽‍♀️

Backfromhols · 17/03/2024 20:16

Not carrying a bank card hardly makes someone look like an idiot.

PrimitivePerson · 17/03/2024 18:39

The payment terminal does.

We’ve already covered the (remote) eventuality that the shop’s systems are down, and concluded that means you can’t use a card either 🤦🏻‍♀️

Simply trying to change your narrative when you’re proved wrong doesn’t work that easily. You were clearly stating “Apple Pay needs internet”, then when corrected by another poster you said “over certain amounts” which I still cannot find any supporting evidence for. Feel free to provide some if you think you have it.

Well I don't understand people who go out without their handbag, but I do understand people not having cash on them for the reasons I gave earlier - the closing down of local bank branches and the cash machines that go with them.

Where I live, it's the law to carry ID at all times, but the Uk has no official ID card so I find your rule of carrying ID all the time quite interesting.

Caswallonthefox · 17/03/2024 20:18

I'm a dinosaur, I always have my cards on me. In a wallet at the bottom of my empty rainbow shopping bag. If I need cash, I have a 5 minute walk to the nearest hole in the wall.
My local sainsburys hole in the wall kept running out of cash, yesterday. I found all this out by going onto my local Facebook page, so I avoided it until the problem was sorted.
If I used my phone for anything my ds would keel over in shock.

Northernsouloldies · 17/03/2024 20:19

Dinosaurs unite 😁

Allfur · 17/03/2024 20:20

They probably tried that, didn't work out so well

I have an Apple iPhone and an Apple Watch, but I’ve never used either to pay for anything with Apple Pay.

Still a card paying gal.

I feel like the odd one out 😂

Trust me, you're not the odd one out. 😁
As yesterday's events proved having a plan B might occasionally be necessary.

My mum just always taught me it’s a good idea. We are very anxious people, and in the worst event I think it’s a good idea to have a card with my name and address on it upon my person. It not necessarily a legal thing, it’s just something I think is important.

Whyarepeoplesoweird · 17/03/2024 20:59

People who pay with their phone and watch make service slowww. It takes so much longer for them to do this than tap a card. Often think they look like idiots.

Allfur · 17/03/2024 21:01

But paying with cash is OK cos its so much quicker?

Bellie710 · 17/03/2024 21:10

This drives me insane! My DD(18) came home from uni she had to make the payment for her accommodation but couldn't because she had left her card at uni! I met up with her on Saturday and we went to Sainsbury before she left and she couldn't pay becuase the card machines were only working with chip and pin. I keep stelling her to take her card with her but she still leaves it at home!

That’s a specific app, not just an across the board point for tickets. If I need, for example, a barcode or QR code from a ticket I will screenshot before I go.

I’ve never used ticketmaster as I’ve no interest in the types of events they sell tickets for, but if they’re asking people to rely on their app then that’s their own poor design for not having a download/offline option. If they can’t produce the software then they should go back to paper tickets.

eta: just read back a few posts and apparently they do have an offline/download option, so….. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Ticketmaster Is downloadable, you can also have the page open.on your phone In a tab that you can get the barcode, you can also have it in a Google wallet I'm sure apple have equivalent. There Is no need for the Internet .

Didn't read the whole post that you've read on sorry.

Allfur · 17/03/2024 21:18

I go to local events using tickets on my phone, nothing to do with ticket master

I don't have a mobile phone, so always carry my card.

You are a star Nipsmum. My DH hates them so I always have to have mine, wish they'd never been invented.

@KateReddy Sorry if you were unable to read my comment correctly.

I stated that I have never had an experience where my Apple Pay hasn’t worked and my card did. I didn’t say these things don’t happen simply that u have never experienced this. Therefore I consider the risk very low. I have however had bank cards lost, stolen and even cloned once. So I consider this a higher risk than the risk of being unable to use Apple Pay.

I've never had issues with cash payments. Never had to enter a PIN or had someone clone it !!

How does it take longer? Tap my watch, hold it over the machine, done. How can that be longer than with a card?

Busybee44 · 17/03/2024 21:59

Because its 2024 and we can use our phones!

God knows why it takes longer but it certainly does for some people. They fumble around with their phone finding their Clubcard then fiddle some more to pay. Both my cards are in my hand and it’s the work of seconds to use them.

And what about those people who fiddle about finding their purse and then looking for the right card?

They’re as irritating as the phone fiddlers and fumblers obviously. They’re also usually old, unlike the phone lot who are usually middle aged and intent on pretending they’re not.

last tickets I had from ticketmaster weren't avaliable to download or screenshot I had to open the app a d click on my tickets they popped up then. the barcode kept moving and jumping with lines going through it and only stopped once scanned in. it was clearly explained that you couldn't screen shot or download and what you had to do when tickets where purchased

Those people would be slow no matter how they paid.

My phone is in my hand, card is ready in the wallet, already verified on Face ID…. as soon as the card reader has been activated by the cashier I’ve tapped and paid. Literally the same speed as a card. In fact, significantly faster than chip and PIN.

DonVanVliet · 17/03/2024 22:51

Is it just me? I use internet banking for everything on my phone, but have never swiped my phone in a shop.
What is the problem with carrying a card? They weigh nothing, yet keep a barrier between your bank account and the shop..
Am I missing something here?

Panda89 · 17/03/2024 23:06

I never take my cards out anymore, I use Apple Pay for everything. Also baffled by people being slow using Apple Pay, I just have to click the side button on my phone, Face ID recognises me, then tap the card terminal.

If the systems were down and Apple Pay wasn’t working I wouldn’t shout at staff though as I know it’s not their fault.
