M25 roadworks - get a grip

crumblinecentral · 16/03/2024 00:35

I'm sorry but anyone who lives or works outside of the "golden sphere" that is the M25 has had to deal with road/motorway closures and sudden changes in route/planning for decades.

Why do we have to be subjected to this as "national news"?

FFS they close motorways every weekend in North West, Yorkshire, Midlands, Wales, Scotland and elsewhere on a regular basis.

I've just looked at the traffic cams (those that are working) for the M25. That whole western side (way either side of J10-11) is pretty much deserted, unheard of for a Saturday morning.

JohnPrescottsPyjamas · 16/03/2024 10:25

270,000 cars a day use this stretch of the M25, so closure will have a ‘slight’ impact on surrounding roads!

Blimey, traffic cams, never seen it so empty.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 16/03/2024 10:42

YABU and making yourself look very silly to post this.

People need to know about the roadworks as it’s a huge stretch of road and not always the same. It’s an area of very heavy population concentration, and general traffic getting from one part of UK to another.

Say if I wanted to go from Norwich to Pembroke, one of three viable routes involves M25. Another around Birmingham and the third cross country. Which I chose (if I lived in either place)would depend on planned road works and traffic conditions.

If I wanted to go from Canterbury to Pembroke, or to Mold or Liverpool or Edinburgh, or to most of UK I’d need to use it.

Sorry if it offends you that people either living in that area or travelling through it exist.

RandomMess · 16/03/2024 10:42

@Tiddlywinks63 if you knew the "village" and knew the supermarket and the route there she was being serious! The stretch of road to get to Brooklands is nicely red. It's regularly carnage there.

Rush "hour" lasts at least 3 hours morning and evening it takes very little to gridlock. Including the whole month of December for "Christmas" shopping in Tesco and M&S.

ABetterEra · 16/03/2024 10:48

I have just lost minutes of my life, reading an article about Sainsbury’s deliveries and how a network problem has led to people not receiving their orders today. I shop at Tesco and I’m feeling most aggrieved that I had to waste my time reading about the Sainsbury’s issue.

It simply does not need to be on national
news. People can check national highways, travel FB groups, traffic England, local news …. the list is endless and what most of us do when travelling to airports or somewhere important regularly.

I think it’s not so much that the powers that be don’t want people in the SE to be inconvenienced, it’s that they don’t want a massive incident with people caught overnight in gridlock or whatever else might go wrong, leading to further problems.

In addition, what’s “newsworthy” depends very much on what else is going on in the region, country, world on the same day.

SilkFloss · 16/03/2024 10:57

@GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing Whilst I agree in principle with your post, bear in mind that for the journeys you list, you could go round the other way on the M25 (e.g. Canterbury to Pembroke: go the northern stretch via Watford)

Do you actually know why they are removing trees and what they are doing?

I do. We’ve received lots of information on it. There has been lots of discussions and protests in the area.

And add all 5 London airports, all accessed by M25, that's 50% of all flights taken by UK nationals.

"Most people in this country never have and never will use Heathrow."
Do you have a link for that statistic?
And how is it relevant what proportion of the country;s total population do or do not use it? The fact remains that Heathrow in particular is one of the busiest airports in the world and therefore many thousands of people using it this weekend will be impacted. Doesn't matter where they live.

https://www.heathrow.com/company/about-heathrow/facts-and-figures

says 86% of passengers international, 2.4 million domestic so leaves a lot of thr rest of population not using, within that 2.4 there’s also probably a lot of passengers that double up with multiple journeys so less than 2.4 million in total. East Midlands is also a significant cargo airport so lots of uk cargo comes in there it’s not all into Heathrow.

however I do actually agree with the closure of the m25 being on the news, as it is a significant road, and if I was travelling south this weekend I’d want to know so I could plan an alternative route not just find out when I got close and saw the signs, heard the local radio. As it happens I’m not travelling south so no impact at all but I don’t mind. It being on the news still. With my comment about Heathrow I was replying to the comment that was insinuating that everyone in the country was completely dependent on Heathrow

The trees have gone because they are not native to the area, and have not been managed. If all goes to plan, we shall see, they are restoring the heathland.

Not the whole story if you look at my previous post.

I live in the north we had a new motorway just and also a bridge taken down after a lorry twatted the support
endless closures grid locked diversions we survived and It didn’t make the news

RandomMess · 16/03/2024 11:38

@rwalker if it's the M6 near Preston both stories did make the news after the after event!

Yeah
what I’m meant about the news is not the hysteria we have

it was just general news like a tanker going over not front page on every channel

RandomMess · 16/03/2024 11:50

I think they want to prevent the chaos, gridlock and serious concerns their non-publicised closures caused up here.

I think the reporting today is because it's a weekend slow news day 😂

Ooh yes, they've been hacked. Nice to know they spent some of our money on IT Security like they should have done! I hate Sainsbury's as there's a woman that works in my local one who's a massive biatch and therefore I will refuse to help them at work going forward because it doesn't affect me!

I don't really understand the argument of 'you survived' the 'endless closures and grid locked diversions'. Surely we mostly aspire to more than surviving!

Why not try and make life easier for many?

SilkFloss · 16/03/2024 12:07

@rwalker Did the motorway concerned have a peak flow of 270,000 cars a day?
But regardless, it's not a pissing competition of who had it worse. The point is, without advance warning, the congestion would have been hugely disruptive for hundreds of thousands of motorists and residents. Why not attempt to reduce that if possible, based on previous experience in other areas?

How long was the road completely closed for?

Did it have other routes that can be used, as I don’t think going through central London is a feasible route for me.
