M25 roadworks - get a grip

crumblinecentral · 16/03/2024 00:35

I'm sorry but anyone who lives or works outside of the "golden sphere" that is the M25 has had to deal with road/motorway closures and sudden changes in route/planning for decades.

Why do we have to be subjected to this as "national news"?

FFS they close motorways every weekend in North West, Yorkshire, Midlands, Wales, Scotland and elsewhere on a regular basis.

You have a public transport system that is usable and has a lot more money pumped into it. In our area our public transport system infrastructure is pretty much non existent and continually getting worse. Families struggle to get their children to school and you absolutely can’t use it to get to work.

It’s interesting that because it’s Surrey and the SE that are inconvenienced it’s an outrage but when it’s the rest of the country nobody in the same area gives a shit.

I live in London, no tube, train within 5 miles, a bus that runs once every 2 hours stops at 6.30pm and does not run on a Sunday

Caroparo52 · 16/03/2024 07:33

It's a very important announcement to alert people to the impending chaos and give them a chance to re think journeys.
If it were me I would like to be warned

LlynTegid · 16/03/2024 07:33

None of this work is necessary. Ban middle lane hoggers, enforce other road crimes and no letting people off bans because of inconvenience, and the capacity in that area will be more than adequate.

I also doubt it needs to be a complete weekend closure. Roadworks are never planned with consideration for people as users of the roads.

Please do not even attempt to infer that as somebody living in London you have shit public transport.

J10 is being rebuilt.... 🙄lots of new houses are going to be built adjacent. It's the quantity not the quality of drivers that's the issue.

Whereabouts in London do you live??

OP of course this closure should be on the national news. It's huge. It doesn't just affect people living there. It's going t impact all who are travelling too / from Gatwick and Heathrow too.

Muchtoomuchtodo · 16/03/2024 07:42

YABU. I live nowhere near and am very glad that I have no reason to venture that way this weekend, or for any of the other closures. It’s going to be horrific for so many people and for so many reasons. I’d definitely be heeding the stay at home if you can advice

Timetogohome2 · 16/03/2024 01:58

A lady that works for my partner has decided to sleep in her car all weekend as her husband is in hospital and is having end of life care and what would normally be a 20 minute journey could possibly take up to 5 hours this weekend going by some of the reports

She doesn’t want to risk not getting there in time if the worse was to happen and she had popped home

I know roadworks have to happen but for her this is the worst possible weekend as it is stress she doesn’t need. We are hoping that the hospital will let her stay on the ward but apparently it is not allowed, even under these circumstances. And we will try and get over there ourselves to support her

Has she tried contacting a local church? I'd be surprised if they couldn't find her accommodation.

They're replacing a bridge amongst other things (they did the same.on the M4 when they replaced a bridge between junction 10 and 11), you can't take a bridge down and put a new one up with traffic around you.

blue345 · 16/03/2024 07:45

YABU. Sorry. There is no other motorway in the U.K. that has 10 motorways joining it plus four airports (excluding London City). It can barely cope with normal traffic and it's rare I drive past Heathrow without a variable speed limit.

I live on a single track road that connects two junctions of the NW M25. When there's a minor issue, the road gridlocks and I have to park elsewhere and walk home. Or, worse still, I can't leave my drive which is stressful if I have a hospital appointment or need to pick up my kids from somewhere without alternative public transport.

It's not about being south-centric, it's just the reality of the volume of traffic using the M25. I was equally pissed off that they cancelled the northern leg of HS2 in favour of the southern part that really wasn't needed.

None of this work is necessary

Oh thank god @LlynTegid has joined to tell those of us who live here what’s necessary. Having lived here for 75% of my life, I was struggling to understand the rationale.

Taking my tongue out of cheek for a minute, an earlier poster had it spot on. Anyone who has tried to exit the A3 to get to junction 10, my word - it is borderline terrifying at times with the inpromptu queue that joins in lane 1, the complete lack of awareness of others in adjacent lanes; the regular accidents that occur here. It needed upgrading urgently.

I also doubt it needs to be a complete weekend closure

Why do some MNetters insist on gaslighting folk and telling them the world isn’t as it is??

My god, they are replacing a bridge. You can’t do that in one night. It needs days of continual work.

THAT is why it is a complete weekend closure. There is nothing to debate, or doubt.

ABetterEra · 16/03/2024 07:51

Tilkyghg6366 · 16/03/2024 05:37

No not a lack of understanding but frustration re the lack of awareness re what the rest of the country goes through as a normality. Where we are in the SW we live with permanently massively pot holed roads everywhere that are ignored, continual roadworks and delays into cities and looooong diversions though tortuous lanes. All with a completely broken and often non existent public transport system.

We have that where I live too. The potholes are ridiculous. Every half term the roadworks make travelling so difficult. Doesn’t mean this M25 story isn’t newsworthy even though it won’t affect me. How odd to get upset by this.

Heathrow is one of the busiest airports in the whole world and the busiest in Britain. You also have the eurotunnel, Eurostar and the major ferry routes off M25 arms.

I get all the annoyance about the London/ SE centricity of this country - but I disagree on this particular issue just being part of that

Agreed. This could affect lorries bringing goods in, international travellers, UK residents returning from hols etc.

It does not affect me directly but I don’t mind being informed of it.

I haven’t yet seen the hysteria. Apart from the OP and those who agree with her ;-)

I live in Surrey and I can't even get a bus to the local train station, where trains to London have been cut from 4 an hour to 2 an hour, even though we are actually in London zone 6 transport network. The roads are literally full of huge pot holes. The roads and public transport are shit everywhere in this country I think. The poor me I don't live near London its soooo unfair just doesn't really hold up anymore, when you factor in the expected difference between living rurally and in the suburbs. There's increasingly no difference with respects to the state of the roads and bus routes in Surrey. This work is a massive pain in the arse but it's to improve one of the most congested junctions in the country (between 2 of the busiest airports) so will eventually make the M25 a little bit more functional. I'm sure people coming up from the SW or down from the N to fly from LHR will appreciate and get value from that.

You have 2 trains an hour to your local city. We have no trains and 1 bus an hour that very frequently doesn’t turn up at all- with no warning.

So because of that, people shouldn’t be informed of a major motorway shutting? Lots of news doesn’t apply to me. You sound very angry.

Apart from major cities, the U.K.’s public transport is pretty atrocious and embarrassing compared to many western countries. That is not a reason not to be informed of this motorway closure which could affect thousands.

AIstolemylunch · 16/03/2024 08:08

Boohoo I live near a capital city, you could too if you wanted to. Where do you fly on holiday from? Oh let me guess, you live near nice local beaches that you object to anyone else ever trying to visit.

The oppression Olympics in this country is pathetic. And how many of the people complaining voted for the people who have overseen it for the last decade I wonder.

camelfinger · 16/03/2024 08:08

It is probably one of the more reasonable news stories we’ve seen of late. A major change was planned, we were informed and now it’s happening. Not weeks of speculation and conspiracy theories. The M25 affects many people beyond the London and the South East. Lorries from France, deliveries, long distance travellers. Many Londoners will avoid it generally as it’s a nightmare (and more useful if you’re trying to avoid London). So it’s not really a north-south thing.

Tilkyghg6366 · 16/03/2024 08:09

Jesus I know people whose cars have been damaged by pot holes (me included) the roads in the south/south east are horrendous. The pot holes on the M25 are great fun if you hit them at 70mph I must make sure I don't complain because in the South East we don't have pot holes so it must be my imagination.🙄

What a ridiculous post. We can’t afford to live near London, most of the country couldn’t.

And no I don’t vote for this London, SE focused government.
