To be so fuming at neighbour!!

Where we live we have to park on the road with our 3 other neighbouring houses (can draw a diagram if required but don't think it adds much to the thread). We've lived here for a few years now and generally it's been fine but had a few minor issues with one neighbour (not parking related). But all fine, nothing to fall out over and I always say hi.

This morning DP was just about to go to work when he witnessed said neighbour drive into his car then drive off WTF. He rang her and she admitted it then said she didn't know it was his car. She obviously knows it's his fucking car as we've lived there for 3 years and there's only 5 cars that park there! Plus if she didn't know whose car it was (as she alleged) was she not going to leave a note? It's caused a lot of damage and is just a massive faff we don't need right now. I'm just so glad he saw it happen because if he didn't then we'd have thought someone driving past had done it and would have to fork out ourselves to repair it and we really don't have the money right now. Aibu to be massively MASSIVELY fucked off with her? DP is a lot more chilled than me and is just glad she'll pay for it but I'm fuming!

You have to report this to your insurance. Not only could she hit a person next time, but as she left the scene, I wouldn't trust her to pay a penny. Then, if you haven't reported it you don't have a leg to stand on and will be out of pocket for her wreckless driving

I absolutely agree. Going to show DP this thread when he comes to bed as the replies have been unanimous!

@JacquesHarlow is it?

Do show that legislation.

JacquesHarlow · 15/03/2024 22:04

It’s incredible that we have a nation of people who are happy to spend hundreds a month on car leases or insurance or repairs, but then go running scared as soon as they drive their vehicle into something.

If someone drives their motorised vehicle into another vehicle, no matter whether stationary or not, it is a legal obligation to report it. You must also report it to your insurance.

But no, as usual us British folk know best, and it’s “you know; one of those laws no one follows” etc

She didn’t even think you’d find out @rickandmorts . She is driving around causing damage and expecting everyone else to pick it up on their bill.

Get the police involved, or insurers, or tell her she needs to pay for the whole repair, but don’t let her get away with it.

“do show that legislation”

Thats a rather dismissivs tone, @puzzledout .

Section 170 of the Road Traffic Act.

I’m not going to Google it and copy and paste it for you.

So true 👏👏👏. I'm just incredibly fucked off about the whole thing to be honest. I've had loads of bad news this week plus a close relative is dying and probably won't make it to the end of the weekend. I'm also still dealing with the insurance and solicitors from my crash last year when my car got written off. They said it will likely go to court from the injuries I sustained. Just very angry and annoyed tonight.

@JacquesHarlow is this a certain type of
accident 🤔

To be so fuming at neighbour!!
LikeaHurricane · 15/03/2024 22:24

Pretty sure it's actually illegal to fail to report an accident to your insurance company. It could lead to your policy becoming void.
.....and she's clearly untrustworthy, she's failed to stop after a road traffic accident which is a criminal offence.
Don't put yourselves at risk. Contact your insurance company first thing tomorrow morning would be my advice.

Theimpossiblegirl · 15/03/2024 22:26

Get photos of the damage to her car and yours then go through insurance.

Yes.

You DONT have to report if nobody was injured, no street furniture was damaged, nobody is suspected of a driving offence and all parties involved stopped at the scene.

The neighbour did not stop at the scene so the OP would have grounds to report, why are you so against that?

puzzledout · 15/03/2024 22:53

@DrunkenElephant because it's not necessary

FlowerWheel · 15/03/2024 22:56

Meh, I would report her to the police as leaving the scene of an accident, especially after saying she’s done it to other people. She’ll hit a kid next.

rickandmorts · 15/03/2024 23:00

The police won't give a shit. When I got crashed into last year by a driver on the wrong side of the road on his phone they did fuck all. Came out to the scene of the accident and didn't breathalyse either of us or take his phone. I actually put in a complaint after about how it was handled and a sergeant rung me up and said yeah it should have been handled better but it wasn't so 🤷‍♀️. And that was after being seriously injured in a crash so I don't think they'd do much for a bump with an empty vehicle @FlowerWheel

I’d be raging and I’d 💯 report to police and insist on going through insurance.

Remind your DP… the kind of person who’d do that to their neighbours car then drive off and pretend it wasn’t them is also the sort of person who SAYS they will pay… then quibbles over the price and / or doesn’t pay…

i had this experience with my neighbours years ago. I had water damage they caused through negligence said I was going to go through building insurance. they said no no no no! We will pay ourselves! Get a quote and we will reimburse you.
at this point if lived there long enough to know
a.they thought they owned the communal hall / the building
b.they were untrustworthy dicks, who wouldn’t repay me

so I got 3 quotes, told them the cost and quietly claimed under buildings insurance.
As a result they thought they owed me £700 which they had NO INTENTION of paying and so avoided me / left me alone in blissful peace for next 3 years!!!!

Moanranger · 15/03/2024 23:09

You will get an incident number from the police. That’s all you need. Makes it official. Paper trail & all that.

Allofaflutter · 15/03/2024 23:11

And tell the police about all the other times it’s been suspected she’s hit other cars. It may not help with those but if more happen maybe she can be stopped before a child gets hit.

Clarinet1 · 15/03/2024 23:14

rickandmorts · 15/03/2024 21:59

@DrunkenElephant when he went round tonight she kept saying she had loads of money so could pay whatever to get it fixed 🫣. Which I found a strange comment. But totally agreed, I don't trust her one bit. How dare she just drive off. When he rung her this morning DP said she shat herself and sounded like she'd been rumbled. So she was definitely going to try and get away with it. Talk about shitting on your own door step. Can't wait to be awkward and frosty with her for the next 20 years 😂

Do you think she might actually be disqualified from driving for a previous offence or have so
many points on her licence that she will be if she gets any more or uninsured? And that’s why she doesn’t want to you to claim against her insurance?

Glassshouldbehalffull · 15/03/2024 23:16

’i can’t wait to be frosty to her for the next 20 years’ 😆I like you, I’m sure we’d get on OP.

Theoldwrinkley · 15/03/2024 23:18

I don't always automatically think the worst of people, but maybe she doesn't want it to go through her insurance if she doesn't have any? Just a thought.....

Well there's one yuck & easy way to find out! Askmid.com

NellyWest · 15/03/2024 23:28

I would bet good money she has an alcohol or drug issue and is driving under the influence when these events happen. Sober drivers don’t just hit other peoples cars left right and centre.

Seeleyboo · 15/03/2024 23:32

Isn't it illegal to drive off after an accident without leaving details. Insurance and police notification me thinks.

DancingFerret · 16/03/2024 00:10

It's an offence to leave the scene of an accident without exchanging details.

I was hit by a woman driver who crossed to my side of the road while overtaking a parked car on her side of the road. She didn't stop and beetled off as fast she could. Fortunately, I was able to turn round and follow her, but lost her when she crossed a main road and I couldn't follow because of traffic.

However, I'd had enough time to memorise her number, the make of car, and its colour. I stopped, wrote down it all down and went to the nearest police station to report her. She was prosecuted and her insurance company paid me in full.

CutthroatDruTheViolent · 16/03/2024 00:22

He feels SORRY for her?!? Why??

Densol57 · 16/03/2024 00:27

You husbands insurance could increase too even though he was not at fault as he still has to declare a claim for the next 5 years, and some insurance companies increase premiums for some unknown and incredibly annoying reason

Keepitweird · 16/03/2024 00:27

Bear in mind that the question at renewal from car insurers is not a straightforward 'have you had a claim' but more along the lines of 'have you had an incident that may give rise to a claim' in the last XX years.

Irrespective of whether you make a claim or it is dealt with by the other insurer or 'off the books' if it is found you had a previous you didn't declare then it could actually nullify your existing coverage for non declaration which makes insurance even bloody harder to get. Insurance companies are actually pretty switched on to stuff, there is a shared database and they do have active fraud teams to check stuff.

If I were you, especially given you have an admission from her via phone/text then I'd absolutely be going through insurance.
