To not buy from Temu

Thinking I'm being more ethical not buying from Temu.

But I keep seeing identical items for sale...

With some products Temu steal stock photos from other merchants, hence why more expensive retailers appear to be selling the same goods (and why when yours arrives from Temu it looks nothing like the photo and as though you made it yourself, but smaller and even shitter.) With others, they’re all just made in the same Chinese factories whether you buy from M&S, Temu, Amazon or the local independent gift shop you assumed made everything themselves round the back out of lentils. Always check the product origin before buying. Where is the M&S one manufactured?

IGotTheChickyPop · 14/03/2024 19:26

I'd still buy the M&S one.

It's his is the equivalent of seeing £60 dr martens on google Shopping or something.

You feel the brief disappointment of having to pay proper price, then you pay the proper price.

doneandone · 14/03/2024 19:28

Nope, it's the one place I never have and never will shop. I'd rather pay more.

suburburban · 14/03/2024 19:28

I don't want to shop there either

Taylormiffed · 14/03/2024 19:34

Never. I think it's probably the least ethical retailer going. Stealing data (the app isn't actually an app) and quite possibly using slave labour.

Taylormiffed · 14/03/2024 19:34

Never. I think it's probably the least ethical retailer going. Stealing data (the app isn't actually an app) and quite possibly using slave labour.

All of that plus the fact they are based in China and when your rattan tray bears no resemblance to the photo, you have no consumer rights and no chance of getting your money back. And you have no guarantee that items are made with safe materials and meet safety standards.

MaMisled · 14/03/2024 19:46

I sell on Etsy and have joined many Facebook support pages. Time and time again people who design and hand make beautiful quirky products are having them copied and sold on Temu for a fraction of the price. Sometimes even using the makers own photos!

Wizzytimehfv · 14/03/2024 19:48

Amazon and it’s sellers are buying from same factories so don’t kid yourself you’re being ethical by buying from them over Temu.

Peekaboobo · 14/03/2024 19:48

I've just started buying from temu and will continue to do so. I used to work on the premise that if you paid more you got a better product but this last 3 years, everything seems to be crap. So if it's crap, at least I paid a crap price for it is my reasoning.

StealthMama · 14/03/2024 20:05

I won't buy from them and don't even look at their website. They are known for operating in areas of china where forced labour is in force and citizens are not allowed leave.

No. No. No.

moonfacer · 14/03/2024 20:06

The TEMU product will not look like that, it will be massively sub-standard.

I’m sure the people doing forced labour are SO happy you’re getting cheap goods.

Kissmystarfish · 14/03/2024 20:07

They data mine too. Plus it’s well known that they’re not quite an honest company.

Moonshine5 · 14/03/2024 20:10

Never bought from shein or temu

pleasecallmeback · 14/03/2024 20:15

Temu, Shein and Cider are all on my banned list for places to buy from. The horror stories about the forced labour in China are enough to put me off ever buying anything from them, regardless of how cheap it is. Supermarkets for underwear, Vinted, charity shops and eBay for everything else.

Expecting manufactured and imported goods at these ridiculous prices is causing the crap quality. You expect a £5 'handwoven'(!!) tray.

Now other companies who used better materials either have to cut costs to compete, or go out of business completely.

It's really the wrong attitude to have, especially given that it isn't made in a vacuum. It takes real people's hard work in terrible conditions, and there is a real impact on the environment, on people's livelihoods when we choose to buy Temu garbage.

Hotgirlwinter · 14/03/2024 20:19

Whilst I agree with not buying from the likes of Temu and Shein (and I don’t / won’t), don’t fool yourself into thinking other retailers do not use the same supply chains.
almost all of the high street and big brands will have dubious elements to their supply chain.

Product quality aside, there are very few genuinely transparent and sustainable brands out there. Very few. So with that in mind, make your choices, but don’t be fooled that the more expensive one is not exploiting people or planet in one way or another

BlowDryRat · 14/03/2024 20:22

YANBU. I will not knowingly buy from sellers who use slave labour.

lickthepony · 14/03/2024 20:29

Be wary of temu. I bought some stocking fillers from them which were all fine but my bank account was then hacked. When I spoke to the fraud department at my bank they were certain that the source of the hack was from shopping at temu.

willstarttomorrow · 14/03/2024 20:29

Basically what @Hotgirlwintersays. I have used temu for some craft stuff for work and some cat toys etc for the foster kittens. For DD and her friends, fast fashion is just so normal. However, the quality of high street brands has really declined and if you look into it most use sweat shops. This is obviously not okay but people are kidding themselves.

This is why I don’t buy things on Amazon. Amazon has just become a huge market place, with lots of really shitty products. There are no quality controls, even though Amazon claims there are.

Flickersy · 14/03/2024 20:37

They're not identical, the M&S one is bigger and has a finer weave.

Buying from Temu is just saying "I'm happy to find concentration camps and I don't care because I get cheap shit".

Gymmum82 · 14/03/2024 21:01

Unfortunately half the stuff on Etsy has been bought on temu and the price doubled or more. I generally check temu and if it’s available there and the same I’ll buy from the supplier rather than the middle man

unsync · 14/03/2024 21:05

Temu, Shein, Amazon - all a no from me. I'd rather go without.
