Thinking I'm being more ethical not buying from Temu.

But I keep seeing identical items for sale...

I’ve not known anyone in real who’s had their banks hacked or whatever. Then again personally I’d always use PayPal or such as a middle man on most websites these days. If it don’t take klarna or PayPal I won’t order.

Never had an item not as described or break easily or whatever. Also like the fact you get a credit if the price drops after you’ve ordered.

You’re kidding yourselves if you think paying an extra £10/£20/£30 means it’s suddenly definitely made in a different factory than those being paid pence. Just the middle men are earning more.

Unless your buying things that’s been made here by materials again already here someone somewhere will have been fiddled over being paid pence for their work for the end person to make a ton. Even your lovely batteries in your Tesla’s and such.

coldcallerbaiter · 17/03/2024 15:20

All Iknow about temu is my teen bought some clothes once to just try them out, arrives and looked nothing like the pic, very cheap nylon crap, will just get worn round the house.

Misthios · 17/03/2024 15:26

Because they don't use slaves and use materials which have been safety tested? Jeezo.

99% of what is sold on Temu is utter shite, landfill crap which people don't need. Nobody died for the lack of a rattan serving tray or the other shite they sell on there. This constant need to buy shit, fill your house with shit, give your kids piles of shit for every occasion makes me want to vomit.

Taylormiffed · 17/03/2024 16:53

UK retailers aren't charging too much. Temu are charging too little by stealing your data and using unethical production chains.

Yes I think so

MrsMiddleMother · 17/03/2024 17:59

Yanbu I never have and never will buy from shein or temu. The data stealing, dangerous chemicals, unsafe electricicals and slave labour are enough for me to pay extra elsewhere.

Misthios · 17/03/2024 18:24

Some people don't give a shit, @MrsMiddleMother . It's cheap and that's all that matters.

BIWO · 17/03/2024 23:43

I have never been tempted - the reviews are absolutely shocking. Give it few months and Temu will morph in to something else!

DeeCeeCherry · 18/03/2024 00:01

New Look loafers are on Temu but priced much cheaper. Shoes on Amazon are on Temu as well. I dislike fast fashion so don't look at and wouldnt buy clothes from there. But I bet clothes on Temu can be found on other sites too, just with different price and description. Bits Ive bought on Temu are shoes and handbag storage, that kind of thing. But if you wear fast fashion, its not any better just because you bought it elsewhere as opposed to Temu. It's all still fast fashion.

MilitantMommyBFArmy4Life · 18/03/2024 07:55

People who buy from New Look probably aren't the same people who are strongly opposed to Temu.

I'm horrified by New Look etc. when I go in, rails of awful fabrics on the discount like that nobody will ever buy, which is more than likely going to be dumped on poor souls in low income cpu tries, fucking up their local textile economy and their environment. If you're happy with that, Temu's reputation isn't crossing your mind.

Temu and Shein are are at the very shit end of the Fast Fashion Scale to be fair.

Depends on your budget.
I buy most of mine second hand, but things like vest tops and underwear. Come from the likes of primark or new look

narniabusiness · 19/03/2024 07:56

Another reason Temu can sell cheaper than M&S is that they pay no import duties or VAT. They get round this by sending the goods straight to you in parcels below the tax threshold (about £30 of the top of my head). . This together with the lack of audit of labour conditions for their suppliers (ie slave labour issues) are the reasons the US are investigating them. Obviously we rely on these taxes to pay for public services.
So even if the rattan tray is exactly the same product M&S pay an additional 22% in import duties and VAT plus a margin to cover the cost of running their shops and to give them a profit of (typically 50% to cover both). It’s not a level playing field and it’s no wonder the high street is dying.

I think the other problem with Temu, Shein, etc is that because prices are low people buy lots of things that are not particularly great, but people just keep them and use/wear once and then it all goes to landfill.

SpringSprungALeak · 19/03/2024 14:15

i havent yet. Mixed thought tbh

User8ikr · 19/03/2024 14:54

I wish the uk gov would do what France has done - exact a tax on fast fashion (including temu, shein) and subsidise repairs. it’s long overdue.

Celeous · 19/03/2024 15:43

Slightly OT but regarding the morality of shopping and M&S, can anyone clarify what their changing room policy is now? Crucially if they ever went back on their absurd self ID policy (men being allowed to use female dressing rooms simply for stating they were women)? Thanks

Dinoswearunderpants · 19/03/2024 15:50

If you buy from Amazon, I guarantee you'll be buying from China and possibly sweat shops at some point.

I love Temu. So many things are much cheaper there. For example, packing cubes are £3.86 and the same on eBay are £12.99.

abracadabra1980 · 19/03/2024 15:57

I 'tried' Temu - appalling quality - every single thing was cheap and nasty. Even their dog poo bags. And if I could pay to obliterate their advertising which pops up effing everywhere, I would. Sick of the sight of them.

France seem to be doing really well on their green thinking.
solar panelled covered car parks, green roofs and this.
it’s all common sense stuff isn’t it.

I bought a top from Shein which looked like a top I already had, which was from a high street store. They were identical, but the one from Shein was a third of the price.

Waxlyrically · 19/03/2024 20:34

I refuse to buy from them or similar places because they are an environmental disaster and encourage excessive consumption of unnecessary products. I would rather pay more, less often, for better quality products.

So would I

We are always being told to reduce consumption and it's not even beneficial to our economy

I bought the first set off Amazon way before I heard of Temu. Bought the same set of Temu for the prices you mentioned and they were the exact same thing. I actually don't know anyone who would scoff at making a saving if they could (except for people on hereGrin)
