I walked into WH Smiths today to buy 5 yr old DD a new pencil case and next to the Hello Kitty and Forever Friends range was the Playboy range - according to the store manager aimed at 14 yr olds!

Normally a 'live and let live' type of person but I was totally incensed at this as my dd thought the bunny logo was cute! Is it me or is the sexualisation of kids getting earlier and earlier?? I think the association with the Playboy top shelf mags etc is blatant and completely inappropriate.

Its like the Woolies Lolita bed range that I read about in the press - completely mad!

I don't like the Playboy stuff either. A lot of the young girls round here have things with the logo on - they don't know what it is really about. Really annoys me.

controlfreakyagain · 26/03/2008 20:23

it is wrong and disgusting.... well done you for being appropriately outraged. did it have a sign saying "dont look / buy if you are under 14" then. and in what possible way would it be appropriate if you were a 14 year old???? yuk.

hecate · 26/03/2008 20:23

Nope. I loathe the playboy range - no 6 year old girl should be wearing the logo of a porn company on her tshirt.

i blame the parents, of course.

fryalot · 26/03/2008 20:24

YANBU

I have this conversation with dd1 (14) on a regular basis.

too bloody regular.

Have explained to her all about what the playboy symbol stands for and what her wearing it is telling other people about her morals and standards.

Her reply.... "but it's cute"

pah!

gothicmama · 26/03/2008 20:24

No you are not I have educated dd in to why I will never buy anything with play boy or logo on (the man who invente it thought women should be cute and fluffy) she is really cool about it which I think rocks

Flynnie · 26/03/2008 20:25

I couldn't agree more. A childrens shop near me sells clothes with the playboy logo on tops...what sort of message is that sending out when worn on a little girl?

OverMyDeadBody · 26/03/2008 20:26

YANBU. I hate seeing the playboy bunny on kids things and clothes. It is very very wrong.

jekyllandhyde · 26/03/2008 20:28

totally agree. advertising porn, be it soft or not, on the clothes/in the rooms/on the stationary of young girls is totally inappropriate if you ask me...

Kitti · 26/03/2008 20:29

I agree. Don't like it either but it's everywhere - I simply refuse to buy it and I would never let my girls have it either. I think it's sad that it's actually being held up as someting to aspire to "be a playboy bunny" like "be a WAG". I shall still be forcing winnie the pooh down my daughters' throats when they're 20

NiftyNanny · 27/03/2008 00:17

I protested outside their Oxford St store and was pleasantly surprised, most people, especially parents, were very supportive.

I think it's so wrong to make this porn culture acceptable to young girls. Aimed at 14 year olds my backside - Argos stocks bed sheets etc. and I think it's aimed MUCH younger.

A lot of men were curious when we protested, and really listened to our arguments.

It's tragic to think girls are aspiring to live a life where they are constantly in clown make up, surgically enhanced and "servicing" one of men's baser desires. Is this really what we want for our daughters? It's disgusting.

thoroughly agree.

nickytwotimes · 27/03/2008 13:44

There's a young woman up the road here who has got the logo on the bonnet of her pink car. [puke emoticon]

VictorianSqualor · 27/03/2008 13:52

DD was offered playboy stuff, her nan looks after a girl of about 12 that gave DD all her bratz stuff when she grew out of it, about 6 months ago I was offered the playboy bedding for her, she is 7 fgs!
Obviously I refused.

nametaken · 27/03/2008 14:11

I don't think these young girls (I mean the under 13's) actually realise it's associated with porn to be honest. I think they just see the cute pink bunny and think its nice.

Joash · 27/03/2008 14:14

WHen I worked as a Youth worker - we had an 7 year old who came in wearing a t-shirt that said "Trainee Porn star" - and she knew what it meant (her mother had bought it for her), so not sure that under 13's aren't aware of what some things are associated with.

Disagree totally.

They may know on a verbal level - but not on a thought level - iyswim.

I think it's disgusting.

well my 11 year old dd is still innocent enough to think that it's just a cute pink bunny and I'm not going to enlighten her.

On the other hand, I wouldn't let her have it if she asked.

What sort of parents buy these for their kids anyway. And what a lovely t-shirt for a 7 year old. Did you say anything to the mother? Even if the mother thought it was OK for HER 7 old I'd be effing furious if she was wearing that round my kids.

TheDevilWearsPrimark · 27/03/2008 14:19

My grandmother bought my sister a playboy silver necklace for christmas. She had no clue and was ill advised by the shop staff.

Needless to say my parents returned it immediately.

Joash · 27/03/2008 14:26

It was pointed out how inappropriate it was on a number of levels; for any girl to be wearing it; for a 7 year old to wear it (and know what it meant); as a member of a girls group aiming to promote self-esteem; etc, etc - she didn't get it at all and refused to stop her daughter wearing it to the centre.

OrmIrian · 27/03/2008 14:27

YANBU.

Yuck.

sweetgrapes · 27/03/2008 14:32

A car a few houses away has 2 boards on it...
like the 'Baby on board' - only one says 'Bitch on board' and the other says 'Nympho on board'.
Not sure how old the girls are - but they have booster seats so they can't be all that old.

I know it's a joke - but I really don't get it.

ProfessorGrammaticus · 27/03/2008 14:38

Did you see the "Beaver" stuff in WHSmith? I think they have removed it now, a range of soft toy beavers wearing t shirts that said "Cute Beaver", "Hairy Beaver" and - I kid you not - "Wet Beaver"
