Would you want to be in the Royal Family?

I mean as Queen or future Queen next in line for succession.

I wouldn't! Not worth all the riches in the world to live in a gilded cage under hugely intense scrutiny. I think it would be a very boring and at the same time highly anxiety-inducing life. And the worst part would be knowing my children would be trapped in it also.

I would rather be my average self, living up north in a terrace house and working full time to pay the bills, but with relative anonymity and freedom. I'm sure if I were in a worse situation in life I would be happy to swap but without huge worries about food and shelter I wouldn't.

YABU - yes I would love to be Queen
YANBU - no, I'd hate it too

Yes I would! So much of the associated negativity is brought upon themselves and it could be so much better. I would love to have even half the opportunities the Royals have.

Cheshiresun · 14/03/2024 11:33

No.

However being an outlying Royal no one really pays attention to and in another country where their Royal families tend to be more low key, I don't think that would be bad at all!

Coptional · 14/03/2024 11:34

Public image of parents aside, I think things have worked out quite well for the York girls. They have titles that open any door, families of their own, seem to live free of scrutiny now. And they seem like very lovely women. The grandkids must all surely have inherited from the Queen's personal wealth.

Magnastorm · 14/03/2024 11:35

Unimaginable privilege in return for hosting a few dinner parties and waving at folk?

Bring it on.

Chunkycookie · 14/03/2024 11:37

Yes.

My father wouldn’t have endured the lack of dignity and pain in the last years of his life I had married into the royal family.

I would have the best healthcare, financial security.

I’d toe the line, smile and keep my mouth shut for those things.

I have to do a lot worse in my own shit life to keep the peace, but for no personal gain to me. So christ, yes, I’d do it all with a fucking smile plastered on my face.

Well, yes. It’s fascinating watching people tie themselves into knots trying to depict it as difficult, when it comes down to ‘be permanently well-groomed and never say anything that hasn’t been pre-vetted’.

ZenNudist · 14/03/2024 11:43

AnnaMagnani · 14/03/2024 10:28

No. There's a reason both William , Harry and Charles got turned down by the aristos they asked - those women were close enough to see the life is awful.

Yes but only because said Aristos would have a fab life without marrying royalty. They get much of the wealth and opulence without the duty and press intrusion.

It's a lot better life than your average care worker, shop worker, nurse/HCP etc and whilst us normals are happy with our lives would swap for a fuckload of leisure time and a big house (houses) with lackies, international travel, meeting the great and good. Going down in history. Signme up.

crumblingschools · 14/03/2024 11:45

Don't think Kate and the kids are having a charmed life at the moment, especially George who probably can't be shielded from all the shit on social media at the moment

Zara and her family do have a better life

Dogdilemma2000 · 14/03/2024 11:46

Only if I could permanently have a hench-dog with me to blame ill suppressed wind attacks on.

Id be like the old DofE though and constantly say the wrong thing.

JSMill · 14/03/2024 11:53

No way. Even if you are a minor royal, you are scrutinised by the media. I'd much rather be a filthy rich aristocrat like the Duke of Westminster.

RageAgainstTheCoffeeMachine · 14/03/2024 12:03

Too right I would.
I wouldn't care if I was snapped in my scruffs wandering the grounds with the dog either.
I wouldn't mind being Princess Margaret actually, she seemed to have a riot while surrounded by luxury, but without the stress of being the Queen.

BrokenBonesStixStones · 14/03/2024 12:07

No I would feel like an utter tosser living so extravagantly on the the taxpayer’s money while the rest of their country is in crisis.

I’d rather live in poverty than knowing my family wealth came from the oppression of others

RemarkablyBrightCreature · 14/03/2024 12:10

Lap of luxury without having to work a day? Yes of course. I hope I’d not be quite as much of an arse as the current lot but yes I’d go for it 😄

5128gap · 14/03/2024 12:32

I think its a very easy life if you enjoy being the centre of attention and being fussed over in return for basically just breathing in and out, showing your face occasionally and now and again reciting some scripted words. And yes, i know, some of them make a bit more out of it than that, but thats their choice really as the expectation for their performance is pretty low compared to those occupying high status positions on merit. The rewards are hugely disproportionate to the effort, skill and ability required, and the best of what the world has to offer is available to you in return for what is typically a mediocre performance and minimal contribution.
So would I like it? If i was in the circle of potential candidates, I imagine so as id be the type to expect people to look at me and hang on my every word and meet my every need, and no doubt id have been raised with different values. As an ordinary person though, id find the attention and fawning very uncomfortable. It would be nice to have their power and means to help people though, so id probably learn to live with it.

SevenSeasOfRhye · 14/03/2024 12:35

No, I would be embarrassed to have so much unearned wealth while so many of the people I reigned over were in poverty.

SkaneTos · 14/03/2024 12:35

I would not wish to a be a queen regnant.

But if I genuinely fell in love with a member of a royal family, then I could absolutely marry that person and have the role that would be neccesary.

CatsWillRuleTheWorld · 14/03/2024 12:53

Yes, I would like to be obscenely rich, thank you very much.

It's true that it would be better to be an obscenely rich person with less scrutiny- let's say, a minor aristocrat. But if I absolutely had to choose between normal working person and royal, sure, I'd take being a royal. Little to no actual work being done, financial security, world-class healthcare, private jets, what's not to like? I don't derive any "meaning" from my 9-5 office job, that's capitalist propaganda. I would abandon it all in a second.

And, I mean, the so-called difficulties and suffering of the RF are nothing compared to what a regular citizen has to endure to make ends meet. I find it frankly ridiculous that so many ordinary people over-identify with the royals and see them as "hard-working" (when their "work" is basically just showing up to things and waving), or unjustly tortured by the media and whatnot- while on the other hand people living in poverty, disabled people and immigrants are vilified as lazy and feckless. My family is suffering severely at the moment due to lack of healthcare provision, and I would gladly lets some paps take a few pics of me if that meant I could get them to a good doctor now and see them treated like human beings.

The biggest problem of the RF is likely the family itself, but a lot of people have terrible relatives who are cold, unloving or abusive AND they are poor on top of that. I read Harry's book and it sounded like a lot of families I know, except he never had to earn his keep a single day in his life. So if I had to choose, I'd take the pile of money in a second.

Alargeoneplease89 · 14/03/2024 12:59

Mayorq · 14/03/2024 10:59

Yeah go on then, only because I've no fucking idea of how I'll find my retirement and I'd trade that stress for the stress of opening the odd leisure centre.

Ideally like others though I'd take a landed gentry role. All the unearned money, Duke of carabaocup title and just having to peg will every couple of months to earn my status seems like a fair trade.

You think opening the odd leisure centre is all they do? Very small minded.

No, I like my privacy.

CranfordScones · 14/03/2024 13:05

No, but I think they do a good job. The work they do needs to be done by someone, and most countries' answer is to have more politicians which is never an answer to anything. Some jobs are too important to be left to politicians.

Magnastorm · 14/03/2024 13:09

Alargeoneplease89 · 14/03/2024 12:59

No, I like my privacy.

I'm sure I work way harder than most of the royals for much less money.

Most of them are complete deadweights, there by circumstance rather than a democratic process or indeed by virtue of having any particular competence.

Quite happy to swap what i do, living on the breadline, in exchange for what they have.

Startyabastard · 14/03/2024 13:10

I used to think it would be fun and glamorous, but I now think the bad would outweigh the good by far.
I feel sorry for the kids that are hounded and can't live in peace.

alfagirl73 · 14/03/2024 13:12

I'm conflicted on this. There are many aspects of it that I would absolutely love. The part that I would not enjoy is every single thing about me scrutinised every time I set foot outdoors - from a hair out of place, strangers analysing my every facial expression, gesture, trying to lip read me every 2 seconds. Literally can't do anything without a lens lurking somewhere.

I know they live a very comfortable life in terms of not having to worry about money and have amazing residences etc... and the privilege of basically being able to go to any special event they want etc, and I do love a bit of pomp and ceremony. I would enjoy all that, and I would enjoy the work side of it too in terms of the actual role. I would enjoy the ceremonial side of it.

I would, however, have to think very carefully about whether the privacy sacrifice was worth it in return.

All that being said though, being honest, yeah - if they knocked on my door and offered me the opportunity - I'd do it.

SpringSprungALeak · 14/03/2024 13:18

Noooooooooooooo
thanks for asking anyway.

Fizbosshoes · 14/03/2024 13:29

No way. I'd hate MN (and everyone else) scrutinising my photos or speculating whether I was pregnant/had an ED/had a prolapse etc etc.

You'd get good seats at concerts or sports events, but then you'd also probably have to go to quite a lot of tedious events, make small talk with Boris Johnson or Donald Trump etc

And Balmoral looks dark and dingy, it probably rains all the time, and would probably have really shit WiFi! 🤣

Bouledeneige · 14/03/2024 13:45

No not at all. I'm an educated career woman and not so good at simpering 'did you come far?' and cutting ribbons. I also like to laugh uproariously, gossip, travel and eat out my own and have a wee bit too much to drink.
