to think this a stealth way to ask for tips?

The tips thread made me realise something I’ve been thinking about since Saturday.

I have been going to the same hair salon for ages - colour, roots, highlights and cuts & blowdries etc - always with the senior hairdresser

For the past year (Easter will exactly a year) I have been going for blowdries only (sometimes hair cut) since I don’t colour anymore and trying to grow my hair - with the caveat that after trying all the hairdressers there I realised that the most junior (cheaper) one is the best of them all when comes to cut and blowdry - her hair is very similar to mine and her hands are super gentle. So I make a point to always book her. I do it online. I go there sometime 4x a month, sometimes 1x a moth but I’m a regular.

So last Sat I had my appt and they called me asking if I could arrive earlier - no priblem.
Got there everything seemed normal.

When the junior hairdresser was blowdrying my hair, the senior came to me to say that she changed my appt from short hair to long hair since my hair is now longer and from now on I should make sure to book long hair always especially since I only want (insert junior hairdressers name) so this is to allow her plenty of time to do a good job.

I was mistfied as to why she said long hair rather than medium but thought it was because my hair was curly so thought nothing if it.
Then upon reflection, sure they should have told me the appt changed when they called me? It is not a big deal but halfway through the appt they told me it would be more expensive. Which is fine, my hair looked good - even though the time duration of the appt was the same for short hair. But I paid for long.

Is is because I never tip?
The mention that I only want XYZ to do my hair makes me think so.

My hair is shorter than this on the photo BTW. I think it is medium not long?

I feel uncomfortable going there again, will have to find somewhere else.

The only cheapskates are the salon owners who don't pay their staff a fair salary. You don't get your car serviced and find a tip jar for the mechanic. There's not tip jars at supermarket checkouts or many other places where staff are providing services. Tipping should be outlawed.

Ok but you think it is fair I book long hair? When it is hardly medium atm?

From the website:

Short hair - above the chin
Medium hair - below chin to shoulders
Long hair - below the shoulders

My hair is definitely not below my shoulders

And what if the junior actually complained and asked the senior to step in?

If your hair is curly what’s the length when wet/ straight? I’d say that was a better judge of time needed. If you are keen then Id probably just pay the extra as finding a different hairdresser is tricky.

is your hair curly? So when wet below shoulders but when curly it bounces up to chin level?

This. They are going by your length when it's wet and straight.

"And what if the junior actually complained and asked the senior to step in?"

Well done her.

FunkyMonks · 13/03/2024 10:57

@Isthisreasonable
I couldn't agree more spot on with what you have said.
I find this whole tipping thing disgusting you are already keeping them in business by using the service they provide there should be no more need for trying to squeeze extra out of a customer or guilting them into leaving more money for you.

We all have expenses at the end of the day we shouldn't have the ohh but you should tip as well.

And to be honest I don't believe the OP books the junior because she's the best at the job. And if she does-all the more reason to tip.

Of you course you don’t…

Probably you also don’t believe that in ALL professions a lot of juniors do a better job than their seniors

Because other factors on how to be promoted or how to get to the top are NEVER at play

I pay £15 (mates rates) for a wash cut and blow dry, i always leave a £5 tip

Picklestop · 13/03/2024 11:17

I think you are being a bit cheeky booking for short hair, I would really think that was more for very closely cropped which will be dry in a very short soace of time. Your hair, assuming it is something similar to the photo, is definitely going to need more attention. And presumably they only brought this up during the appointment because that is when they noticed.

I don’t think this is anything to do with a tip.

if that was when they noticed, why would they ask me to come earlier?
and sure it is medium not long?

I have no idea why they asked you to come earlier, perhaps they just looked at the schedule and it worked better. Book medium next time then, I have never seen a hairdresser having short, medium, long appointments so not had to navigate this.

they asked me to come earlier because they changed my appt to long hair which takes more time except it didn’t

I don't tip, well apart from at Christmas and it's probably a stingy one at that I give €10 the to girl that does my brows and €10 to the hairdresser for a Christmas drink

BrokenBonesStixStones · 13/03/2024 12:29

Also just to add, it may have taken her same time to do it, but that could be more than the system allocates for short hair?

I think she said about junior stylist because she expects her to be slower at it. Also probably her nose is out of joint that you think the junior is better lol.

Honestly OP, I Dont think its to do with tipping.

I’ve been doing my hair with hair for a year. She even cut my hair in Feb.
When I started one year ago my hair was much shorter - so they were actually making time on my short hair appt if you see what I mean?

That is absolutely not medium - it's short. Medium is shoulder length and long is below shoulder

Agreed! Google short hair styles. A Bob lemgth is short. I'm flabbergasted that's long
