Child hurt by staff member at nursery

Pololo · 12/03/2024 19:42

Posting for traffic.

I had a call from nursery today saying that a member of staff had been trying to get my son to take his shoes off, to go down for a nap. Apparently to do this they grabbed his leg and pulled him, knocking him over and he hit his head on a cabinet. This was witnessed by other staff members.

He is fine following the incident and we were informed and apologised to straight away. The staff member was moved to another room for the aftenoon. Nursery sought advice from LADO and have reported to police. Is there anything else I need to ask nursery to do, or need to do?

I'm a bit shocked and worried this will cause other staff have bad feelings towards my son. I've never had any concerns about any staff at the nursery. My son is 2 with a speech delay so he can't tell me about what happened.

I have absolutely no words for this. I would be demanding a formal safeguarding investigation takes place by the nursery. Your poor son.

Minfilia · 12/03/2024 19:45

Im surprised the staff member wasn’t suspended…

Brb5mins · 12/03/2024 19:45

I’d be worried I thing that’s a very odd thing to happen and I would ask for staff member to be permanently moved. I have a dd who wouldn’t say if mistreated and think you need to be extra careful. It’s just something not right here

TheBeanBeanie · 12/03/2024 19:47

I think you need to go to ofsted and also ask for the crime reference number and speak to the police yourself

Brb5mins · 12/03/2024 19:48

ps my two kids were in nurseries for years, and nothing like this happened.

PTSDBarbiegirl · 12/03/2024 19:49

I find it strange the staff member was put in another room. If it was witnessed and the nursery went as far to inform the police then staff member should have been sent home surely. It doesn't sound like they are saying it was an accident.

It's not the nursery's job to investigate. Outside agencies do that and the nursery have acted appropriately in reporting it.

Brb5mins · 12/03/2024 19:51

And I’m wondering why you’re worried about other staff reacting oddly to your child - clearly this nursery person made a serious mistake.

trippily · 12/03/2024 19:51

I assume if they were not sent home then it was an accident? I have done something similar to one of mine ages ago, picked up one of their feet to sort out shoes in a rush and just sent them completely off balance. I felt awful. Accidents happen, humans are faliable.

Mummame222 · 12/03/2024 19:51

The staff member should have been suspended. What the fuck were they thinking?

Of course the nursery have to investigate! They can do a limited investigation and take the advice from an outside organisation to act on but they need to start an investigation!

ExperiencedTeacher · 12/03/2024 19:53

The nursery will be following the advice of the LADO.

No they are witnesses. They are following advice from LADO and the police which is the correct thing to do.

TheBeanBeanie · 12/03/2024 19:56

I don't know who LADO is but why haven't they or the police contacted OP?

Purpledragonz · 12/03/2024 19:57

Poor baby!

I think the nursery is handling it well right now.

I'd be very reluctant about having that staff member around your son for the time being though while you find out whether it was a genuine accident or she lost her temper

I wouldn't worry about them having bad feelings towards your son, it wouldn't make sense

Local Authority Designated Officer.

It only happened today, they will!

Nmchanger · 12/03/2024 19:59

Initially the nursery have done everything right by contacting the LADO and the police. The police will conduct the formal investigation not the nursery.

However, there should now be a management if allegations meeting, and the nursery should be taking advice from the LADO as to whether to suspend the member of staff or not. You can ask if this has happened or not.

Because people are strange selfish creatures and ultimately they're now going to be one person down and might blame the victim.

Isthisexpected · 12/03/2024 20:01

So sorry this happened. I'd be pushing for immediate suspension and contact the police myself.

TomeTome · 12/03/2024 20:01

Was he seen by a Dr? (If not do you know what to be looking for in a head injury/concussion)
Is there a bruise? (If so take photos)
Is the suggestion it was an accident or on purpose?
I’d ask work for a day off and call the police to ask what happens next.

Cas112 · 12/03/2024 20:02

The staff member will more than likely be suspended and an internal investigation from there

The higher ups of the nursery company will more than likely decide to give p45 to said nursery nurse

LADO - Local Authority Designated safeguarding Officer.
I should imagine that the OP has not been contacted because they are investigating. The OP will have nothing to add to the investigation at this stage as she wasn’t a witness.
OP, I wonder what the staff member who spoke to you actually said about the incident? If they used the words you wrote, that sounds far more serious than ‘she had hold of his leg to remove his shoe and he fell over and banged his head’ and I would have expected the LADO to advise the Nursery to send the member of staff home pending further investigation. As they didnt do this, I suspect the explanation they gave to the LADO wasn’t as serious.

Brb5mins · 12/03/2024 20:04

If I thought other staff were unprofessional enough to potentially victimise my speech delayed child who’d been yanked over, the trust would be gone though - they need to move a different staff member in.

Betecbetty · 12/03/2024 20:08

Poor bub hope he's OK

Axx · 12/03/2024 20:12

WTAF? Moved them to another room? No. That's not okay.

I hope your DS is okay. I'd be contacting whoever they contacted at the police in the morning.
