Child hurt by staff member at nursery

Posting for traffic.

I had a call from nursery today saying that a member of staff had been trying to get my son to take his shoes off, to go down for a nap. Apparently to do this they grabbed his leg and pulled him, knocking him over and he hit his head on a cabinet. This was witnessed by other staff members.

He is fine following the incident and we were informed and apologised to straight away. The staff member was moved to another room for the aftenoon. Nursery sought advice from LADO and have reported to police. Is there anything else I need to ask nursery to do, or need to do?

I'm a bit shocked and worried this will cause other staff have bad feelings towards my son. I've never had any concerns about any staff at the nursery. My son is 2 with a speech delay so he can't tell me about what happened.

So just to update - when I posted this they did not have cctv of the incident. I've since been allowed to view the cctv as it shows this was not in any way an intentional act and was an accident where my son had been leaning on a staff members legs while she helped him with his shoes and fell through the middle of her legs.

The statements from other staff members did not in any way match what had happened (and one of these staff members left the setting a week later). They obviously can't share about any disciplinary action towards the other staff members.

I've sat down with the nursery to look at the outcomes and am really happy with how they dealt with this.

I'm so glad it wasn't intentional, you just feel so much better?

And accidents do happen, to everyone!

StealthMama · 02/05/2024 06:48

Why did the nursery report to the police, instead of viewing the cctv in the first place?

They just believed the staff who were lying?

You still have a nursery issue there.

Brb5mins · 02/05/2024 07:46

just goes to show truth is strange than fiction! Agree it’s bizarre they don’t look at cctv first but glad that there is no abuse going on. The staff situation is very odd.

GoldenTrout · 02/05/2024 08:35

Sounds like a very good nursery.

gettingbackonit23 · 02/05/2024 08:41

Awful of the other staff members to do that to their colleague. Really disgusting that people like that are working in childcare.

Wow @Pololo this is good news but why on Earth were 3 staff members describing it as being done purposely?

Indeed. It obviously caused a huge distress to us as parents and the nursery especially the staff member who was accused and moved to another room.

I'm so glad they had cctv, so you could see that it was an accident. Accidents do happen. I bet that member of staff felt terrible about it too.

Spinningroundahelix · 02/05/2024 08:52

The very first thing to suspect where there is a speech delay is a hearing problem. Has your child's hearing been tested?

Have you actually read the thread?

Isthisexpected · 02/05/2024 08:55

Glad it's resolved OK.

You still have a nursery issue there.

They explained they have a responsibility to investigate allegations and were advised by LADO to contact police as a potential assault had occurred even whilst waiting for cctv.

They said they will consider in future whether they told us at the right time or should have waited for cctv. I said I would prefer to be aware as a parent and understand that I may not have the full story.

On this thread ive had thinly veiled (and less so) suggestions that im both over- and under- reacting to this incident. It seems to be quite easy to judge my response to it all as someone looking from the outside in...

This!

The believed the word of three members of (lying?) staff over the one telling the truth!? That is just bizarre. I would be so upset if I was that nursery worker who wasn’t believed?!

And what, they just forgot they had cctv installed!?

If they hadn’t had the footage, that employee could easily have faced a disciplinary and been sacked or got a criminal record, based on the words of their own colleagues who collectively remembered something that didn’t happen! I’d be handing my notice in asap!

Lol... and now unsolicited advice. He's just had grommets put in and has been under audiology and ENT since before he was 1.

@gettingbackonit23 I edited my post when I saw the update by the OP. I mentioned hearing loss because the OP's son had a speech problem. My son who also had a speech problem had undiagnosed glue ear and was diagnosed with global development delay. It turned out that he had glue ear and was very deaf. It wasn't picked up by nursery staff, a speech language therapist or the doctor. He got grommets and rocketed ahead. I still feel a lot of guilt for the fact that we didn't initially notice. It caused problems with speech and spelling that took a lot of work to turn around.

Bizzare story, if there was CCTV all along…

Thank you for the update OP.
So pleased it has all worked out in a positive way. I'm an ex nursery manager of 10 years.
Sorry you've had some questionable posts on here.
The nursery did the right thing in contacting the LADO straight away. They have to do this if any child is injured at the hands of a staff member even if they suspected an accident. The LADO then advises them, contacts police etc.

Obviously the issue here is the staffing problems with the false statements coming to light. Hopefully the nursery will investigate this fully.
Glad your little boy is OK and hopefully this worrying time is over for you now💐

wildthingsinthenight · 02/05/2024 09:35

Also to others saying why didn't they just look at the cctv...
Once a child is injured through the actions of a staff member the LADO takes over and it is for them and the police to decide if it was an accident. Sometimesx Ofsted will get involved too.

A nursery could be shut down if they don't follow correct procedure from their policies where child injury is involved.

Makes you wonder if there's a bullying issue amongst the staff. Disgusting thing to do to the person telling the truth.

RiceCrispyCakes · 02/05/2024 12:30

Wow that poor staff member, goes to show you shouldn't assume.
Think the ones who lied about it should be suspended!

Absolutely-I certainly wouldn’t be able to trust their version of any events in the future!
