To think most make up is a waste of time?

I've never been a girly girl, never seen the point of tanning, nails, fashionable clothes, makeup etc. I do wear makeup on occasion, but it takes me 5 minutes to apply- some powder, a little mascara and maybe some lip tint.

I used to use more makeup to cover blemishes when a teenager.

But I know so many women who spend hours a week on their face. The time, the effort and the expense seems to be immense. I just don't get it. Why spend so long applying expensive paint to your face? Why not just look how you look? Men don't go through all this nonsense and somehow we are able to stand to look at their bare faces.

I know some people are going to say makeup is their hobby, they enjoy it, fine. I'm more addressing those who feel they have to put it on before leaving the house every day.

Help me to understand!

I like make-up. I use it every day and it takes me about 10 minutes to apply. I'm not insecure and I don't have low self-esteem. I would say I'm on the more attractive side naturally and feel comfortable in my own skin. I'll go out barefaced for exercise.

I like the ritual of make-up. It makes me feel more put together. My clothes are on the smarter side, so I think that is partly why too.

grinandslothit · 12/03/2024 07:45

I used to wear a lot in my youth as I had a job in entertainment.

I loathe wearing anything on my face now because it feels funny and like a mask. I think I've developed sensory issues having anything on my face.

I equate it to low self esteem. My best friend refuses to even go to the corner shop without a trowel of makeup on.

If people feel better about themselves with make up on then I guess it serves a purpose.

Ok. Firstly, that isn't what low self esteem means
And secondly, you have made this assessment based on a subject sample of one
I find your scientific method lacking 😂

I'm not a make up person either.
I guess a lot of people are very insecure about their appearance and it makes them feel a bit better.

Better than being judgemental, though?

Really - what do you think low self esteem is then? It’s a person that has a low sense of self value (people pleasers, lacks confidence, low boundaries etc). I appreciate many women will wear make up because they want to, but many will because they lack self esteem - they wear it because they think it makes them more attractive to other people, and it gives them a confidence boost because they don’t think they are worth much without covering up etc. I appreciate it’s a lot more complex than that, but that’s my “non-scientific” opinion based and my lived experience.

Or, they are worth SO Much, they are worth being decorated and adorned.... Ever considered that? I find it the weirdest thing that people assume the more negative stance

I’d see that in a negative light as well. Seems a bit narcissistic to me.

Ahh I see, so no one can win for you..... Too little self esteem.... A healthy self esteem knowing they are worth whatever they like to do and enjoy... Cool 👌🏻

WandaWonder · 12/03/2024 10:26

The idea of doing something to yourself that only others can see unless you are constantly looking in a mirror is for other people

The person wearing it doesn't see it so how can it be for them only?

I don't care who wears it but the idea of 'I am a women and I have no choice but to wear makeup it is forced on me' is ridiculous

oh I think women are perfectly capable of having high self esteem and wear makeup.
The way you phrased your previous post with words such as thinking they are “worth SO much” that they were “worth being decorated and adorned”, suggested a rather narcissistic approach - that they are worth it and others don’t/ aren’t as deserving as them

To you. As this thread and plenty of others have laid out, it's about how it makes someone FEEL not about looking at themselves all the time.

But you're ignoring the many people on here who say it boosts their confidence, makes them feel in control, is a pleasant and creative hobby.

I don't wear it for other people, fuck that.

No, I was presenting the other side of how your post read, that's all. But I'm glad you accept people can love themselves and still enjoy make up

BlueyInsideVoice · 12/03/2024 10:33

Because they want to?

Personally I don't wear make up every day because I'm too lazy; plus I'm disabled so don't go much further than the school run so I don't see the point of putting make up on to sit at home.

However, on the occasions that I do go out, I will take 2 hours and do a full face. Foundation, concealer, contour, blusher, highlighter, false lashes.. the lot. I love how I look with it on, so I enjoy taking that time to get myself ready. I spend a small fortune and my dressing table is full of products & skincare.

I also get my false nails done every 2 weeks, love a bit of fake tan, get my hair done properly every 6-8 weeks, have facials.. it's nice to take that time to pamper yourself if you really enjoy it.

If it's not for you then fine, but other people's choice to do that stuff isn't really something to question.

No but make up is for other people looking at the person wearing it

I can say I wear comfortable underwear for me because no one else sees it or wearing a watch, apart from husband, but make up is only seen by other people

4610J · 12/03/2024 10:37

It takes me in total about 5 minutes to get my face and hair ready for work. A bit of foundation, concealer, mascara & lipstick then I brush my hair into a clip. I look a hell lot better than if I just washed my face and brushed my hair and left it down without washing it.

I take longer at the weekend or on nights out but I do like to make an effort with hair, face & clothes.

onwardsup4 · 12/03/2024 10:37

I haven't wore make up daily for a few years. I do get lash extensions though which give me confidence so I think that's the reason why. This thread has made me want to do make up again! Shopping spree needed

Can you see your make up when you walk around without a mirror?

peakygold · 12/03/2024 10:38

The day we moved house, I didn't bother with make-up for the first time in years. A colleague saw me in the street and asked me if I was unwell. I won't make that mistake again.

Gibs0nGirl · 12/03/2024 10:39

No @WandaWonder but I know it's on my face because I put it there 🤨

Stonehill · 12/03/2024 10:39

Gibs0nGirl · 11/03/2024 19:05

What do you need to understand? That some people like stuff you don't?

I'll see if I can list my reasons if that helps:

  • I enjoy the ritual 20 minutes of peace while I do my make up every morning
- I love a new lipstick more than I can explain
  • learning new techniques is fun
  • I look many hundreds of times better with it on
  • it boosts my confidence and makes me feel strong and at my best, especially at work where I need to feel in control

your feelings are valid, if you like doing it, then do it, BUT no way do you look 100s of times better with it on. You look 100s of times faker. We have been conditioned to expect women to cover their faces with this doll like mask, and it is NOT a better look at all - just a more conventionally acceptable one.

women look 100s of times better with their natural face, not their mask.

With make up on, they look like they are ashamed to show their real selves.
They look like they are entirely subservient.
They look like their only priority is to kowtow to the patriarchy.
They look like they are prepared to give all their money to multinational con artists. They look like they think their time is best spent conforming to what men expect

None of this looks good.

tryingtohelp82 · 12/03/2024 10:40

I enjoy it. It only takes me 15 mins to do a full face with eyelashes etc. I love the look for me. It's not expensive. I don't care what others do.

4610J · 12/03/2024 10:42

@Stonehill Do you spend money on nice clothes?

tryingtohelp82 · 12/03/2024 10:42

HuckleberryBlackcurrant · 11/03/2024 19:11

@GoodVibesHere

Right. I feel like hrs a week is a waste of life honestly.

It doesn't take that long and if it did, who cares? They enjoy it. I'm sure you do things others would deem a waste of life.
But there's no point in this petty shit, you're not a nice person trying to bring others down. Check yourself.

Absolutely. I fully accept this, but I still, rightly or wrongly, automatically assume people that wear excessive make up have self esteem issues.

Personally I don’t wear makeup. I’m confident in my own skin. I appreciate though that other people enjoy make up like I enjoy bold coloured clothes.
