a woman asked me to hold her dog at the checkout while she packed her shopping. Was I BU to say no?

The woman in front of me was unloading her trolley onto the conveyor belt with one hand and holding a dog under her other arm. Is it a pug, the one with the squashed up face? Anyway, it wasn't happy and was wriggling around.

She asked if I could hold the dog so she could pack her shopping properly in her bags. I said no. She said she couldn't put the dog on the ground because it didn't like the feel of the floor under its feet. I still said no. She then took absolutely ages making a point of packing her shopping with one hand. At the checkout. While holding a dog.

The checkout operator told her dogs were not allowed in Aldi and she replied "well that's why I'm carrying her". Nothing more was said.

I know mumsnet will probably be divided into those who would be delighted to hold a stranger's dog then pack up their loose fruit and veg. I'm not one of those people.

Would you have held her dog?

NBU...I wouldn't have held it either..

Thankgodforwine · 11/03/2024 17:32

I love dogs so I would of but YANBU

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 11/03/2024 17:33

Definitely. Giving it back though (well I'm not sure about that). 😉😂

IAmAnIdiot123 · 11/03/2024 17:36

Absolutely not unreasonable! It doesn't matter if you like dogs or not. I like kids enough to have had 2 of them, I wouldn't want to hold some randoms baby at the checkout either!

Greenpolkadot · 11/03/2024 17:37

She must have known she couldn't pack her shopping if she held the dog..what a turd she was

AdoraBell · 11/03/2024 17:37

YANBU in the least .OP

Ophy83 · 11/03/2024 17:38

My large dog would probably end up ice skating on a supermarket floor. I don't bring him with me to Aldi, nor would I carry a strange dog I know nothing about

Puzzledandpissedoff · 11/03/2024 17:40

I can't believe she got all the way round Aldi unchallenged

Neither can I - people have been known to try this in my local one, but fortunately the manager's a guy with sense and they're asked to remove the dog immediately (and themselves too if they refuse)

Sweetpeasaremadeforbees · 11/03/2024 17:41

I'd have done it but seriously been cross with myself for doing it!
Well donefor.not.
I'm a mug

This is probably me ^ I do think dogs seem to be getting everywhere these days. A big garden centre near me has a section of their large cafe cordoned off for people to sit with their dogs but still loads of people take their dogs into the rest of the cafe or the restaurant. I don't know why they can't leave them in the car. I like dogs but a lot of people don't.

I would hold a baby but not a dog, it might snap at me! People are getting crazier, last time I was in aldi the man behind me in the queue had a very large parrot on his shoulder.😳

Did the man have an eyepatch and a wooden leg?

SuffolkUnicorn · 11/03/2024 17:42

No I wouldn’t have what a headcase

would She hold someone’s screaming child?

Sweetpeasaremadeforbees · 11/03/2024 17:43

Did the man have an eyepatch and a wooden leg?

😄

Dibblydoodahdah · 11/03/2024 17:43

No way. I would have ended up in hospital as dogs trigger asthma attacks for me even when I don’t touch them never mind if I do.

FaintlyMacabre · 11/03/2024 17:43

I wouldn’t hold a dog, would hold a baby if asked but it makes
more sense to help with the packing if help was genuinely required.

SignoraVolpe · 11/03/2024 17:45

DeZerbisWinnerWinnerPastaDinner · 11/03/2024 16:27

I'd have put it on the conveyor belt to give it some exercise.

😂 Good idea.

I don't think it should be allowed to have parrots in supermarkets. It's confusing enough as it is with the amount of sound. Parrots easily pick up on repeated phrases and add to the confusion. Like 'please continue' or 'unexpected item in the bagging area'.

TedMullins · 11/03/2024 17:51

I love dogs especially pugs (I have a rescue one so have a soft spot, but will caveat this with yes they're deformed and you shouldn't breed them) so I probably would've held the pug but this woman was being ridiculous. She's doing the dog no favours carrying it everywhere, it needs exercise. Also just... leave it at home! Most dogs can handle 15 mins while you pop to the shops!

Rainraindontgoaway · 11/03/2024 17:52

I love dogs but there is no way I would have held on to the pampered ball of snot whilst she sorted herself out. The shop should have refused to serve her if dogs are not allowed in there.

MumblesParty · 11/03/2024 17:53

I’d have taken the dog and then put it on the ground! Ffs it needs to get used to the feel of a floor

BambooWhoosh · 11/03/2024 17:53

Was it an emotional support pug?

43ontherocksporfavor · 11/03/2024 17:59

Dogs are not allowed in Aldi. I witnessed a customer being told so last weekend.

ErrolTheDragon · 11/03/2024 18:06

I don't know why they can't leave them in the car.

Well obviously they can't in warm weather. And some car insurance companies have in the small print that it's invalid if the windows aren't closed. So that's not always a possibility.

SevenSeasOfRhye · 11/03/2024 18:08

I'd jump at the chance to hold a pug.

Sweetpeasaremadeforbees · 11/03/2024 18:13

Well obviously they can't in warm weather.

I assumed the OP was in the UK.

ScierraDoll · 11/03/2024 18:16

Dogs should not be in shops or cafes
