Please help: have eaten a large portion of uncooked lentils (but were soaked for 24 hours), will I be alright?!

Multiple sources on Google are saying that I can expect diarrhoea and vomiting (at best) and at worse death! I am not sure whether or not the fact that they were soaked for 24 hours in cold water means that they are not considered raw, but the packet says cook for 30-40 minutes after soaking and this part was not done at all.

Please can you advise? Am I now finished or is it likely to be alright? 😶

Gosh. I've no idea sorry. But posting to ask what kind of lentils as I think that might be relevant.

Lentils contain lectin which is only broken down with heat, not just soaking. You might not feel great and may have a bit of an upset stomach but death very very unlikely.

aodirjjd · 11/03/2024 14:06

Can I ask why do you eat cold lentils??

Birmingbacon · 11/03/2024 14:06

were they not disgusting? I would assume you'll have a rock solid stomach but will pass them. They were soaked so have already had a chance to absorb water. They might absorb the water in your stomach as they travel through which could cause upset stomach. I would not be concerned about death :)

YoureWinningAtLife · 11/03/2024 14:07

How did you eat them raw?!

Tbf, cooked lentils can give you a clear out anyway. I’d just plan to not be too far from a bathroom for the next couple of days. Hopefully you will be okay. Wishing you luck.

They were in a salad that was made my someone else. They were quite tasty and had been fried for 2 mins together with some onions and other ingredients, but the bulk of the dish was lentils. Not cooked for anything like the 30-40 mins that the dish recommends

Ok. Thank you for the reassuring responses everyone! Job interviews coming up this week so having to stay very close to the bathroom is far from ideal! Fingers crossed I won't feel too unwell.

If they were fried at high heat then that will have helped. I don’t think I’ve ever cooked lentils for 30-40 minutes and have never seen a recipe which called for it tbh. They’d be mush.

areyoutheregod · 11/03/2024 14:09

I am surprised you read death?? thats alarming. I have eaten undercooked lentils before, they felt harder when I ate them and I got massive bloating and flatulence for ages! I honestly think thats the worst you can expect

itsalentilsone · 11/03/2024 14:13

Thanks all!

I would have though you would get a lot of wind as not very digestible. That's it.

BobbyBiscuits · 11/03/2024 14:22

Lentils don't take 40 minutes, more like maybe 20. But they do need to be cooked. I hope the person who made it apologised!
You may well have stomach ache and dodgy bowels but I don't think it could be fatal. You'd have to eat kilos of them probably to finish yourself off!

Formel · 11/03/2024 14:46

They'd have been hard to eat if they were actually raw - are you sure they weren't tinned? If so you'll be fine.

Gymnopedie · 11/03/2024 15:04

Green lentils do take 35-40 minutes to soften.

Allofaflutter · 11/03/2024 15:06

Maybe invest in some anti wind tablets for the job interviews.

Momstermunch · 11/03/2024 15:10

Surely if they were uncooked they were hard and pretty much inedible so you wouldn't have eaten loads? If they were soft enough to be pleasant to eat they would be cooked enough I would have thought?

LakeTiticaca · 11/03/2024 15:40

Or a cork
Just be careful removing it though 😉

I'd say probably d&v due to the lectins. Good luck 🫣

ODFOx · 11/03/2024 15:48

I think you need running shoes and charcoal knickers. You'll definitely live.

AwkwardSquad · 11/03/2024 15:53

Chew fennel seeds, if you have any - helps either the flatulence

purplehotdogs · 11/03/2024 15:59

You'll be fine, I made fried lentil patties with red lentils that were soaked but not cooked and only fried them for a couple of mins. No side effects whatsoever.

Thank you for the responses everyone. No I have not posted about this topic or any topics similar to this before. Would have learnt my lesson if I had ended up in this situation before!
