Please help: have eaten a large portion of uncooked lentils (but were soaked for 24 hours), will I be alright?!

Multiple sources on Google are saying that I can expect diarrhoea and vomiting (at best) and at worse death! I am not sure whether or not the fact that they were soaked for 24 hours in cold water means that they are not considered raw, but the packet says cook for 30-40 minutes after soaking and this part was not done at all.

Please can you advise? Am I now finished or is it likely to be alright? 😶

Not me. But I suppose this is not such an usual thread topic, so it may well have been posted by someone else before.

You'll probably just have a lot of wind!

Buscapan or windease immodium on standby let it run its course if you can maybe grab some oral rehydration stuff just in case

muddyford · 11/03/2024 17:27

Soaking does not equal cooking.

Dahlia444 · 11/03/2024 17:32

I was served some crunchy (very partially cooked) dried kidney beans by a friend. I was far too polite to comment, why I don't know, because I did know all about the possibility of lectin poisoning (d&v). Fortunately DH and I were fine. Hope you are too.

I never soak lentils, only chickpeas. Am I supposed to?! I do cook them regularly though and never had any ill effects.

fuxsticks · 11/03/2024 17:53

Soaked raw green lentils are completely safe - loads of raw foodists soaks and sprout them, then eat them raw. I have eaten soaked raw lentils literally hundreds of times, and never been remotely unwell. Farty yes, ill no.

aramox1 · 11/03/2024 20:13

Red lentils cook in 20 no soaking. Puy take 30. Green and brown flat lentils take longer. Hope you're ok op

Banrion · 11/03/2024 20:17

How are you OP?

Reds are mush after 10 whenever I cook them.

I’ve always found lentils much quicker than the instructions

Bluesky91 · 11/03/2024 20:18

We routinely eat green mung lentils soaked (and sprouted). Also, plenty of chutneys are made in south India with soaked lentils (chana dal).

You will probably be ok, but pls call 111 for advice.

chillberri · 11/03/2024 20:24

You would know by now

itsalentilsone · 12/03/2024 11:46

I am fine thank you! No issues to far. Although still waiting on a bowel movement so might be constipated - sorry for the TMI. No serious wind though and no d&v, thankfully.

I appreciate all the comments and advice :)

@itsalentilsone The notion that you were a repeat offender in terms of raw lentil munching, haha.
If you are constipated I find dulcoese/docusate is good as it does not cause cramping or diarrea.
Or eat some prunes. Hope you feel better soon.
How's the person who fed you them feeling though...have you heard from them?

If they were fried at high heat then that will have helped. I don’t think I’ve ever cooked lentils for 30-40 minutes and have never seen a recipe which called for it tbh. They’d be mush.

Edited

Green lentils easily take that time. Red lentils will indeed be mushy.

Birmingbacon · 13/03/2024 23:46

Are you still alive op?
