To patch my crotch?

Slightly embarrassing but I've rubbed a hole in my jeans between my legs (two pairs!!) 😩

Do people patch this area or is it just time to throw them out?

Patch in the inside (less obvious)

This is what I do too

Fraaahnces · 12/03/2024 02:52

For the love of god, please remove your jeans before ironing the patch on!

PeloMom · 12/03/2024 03:13

If it’s jeans hard to find/ favourite etc I patch from the inside. If they’re relatively cheap and easy to find- bin and buy new ones

SheepAndSword · 12/03/2024 03:14

Never knew this was a thing! Mine just get frayed around the bottom of the legs, the hem bit.

What sort of jeans are you buying? Good luck with patching.

bradpittsbathwater · 12/03/2024 03:19

Bin them unless they're expensive. I'd be paranoid any patch repair is noticeable

I think I'm worried about it chafing if I patch on the inside. But I may as well try I suppose.

It'll chafe worse if you patch on the outside and leave the disintegrating fabric next to your skin. Stay away from iron-on patches in this area though - use real fabric.

I zigzag / lightening stiched the edge of the patch so there was no edge. Poor jeans was 7 years old and £12 originally but I did love them. I think I'm going to make them into bag in homage to them

Patch everything. Visible mending is very cool these days. Saves money, better for the environment. I’m sitting here in trousers I’ve had since the 90s, patches in various places, still work fine.

Fraaahnces · 12/03/2024 09:41

Another idea if you’re at home in front of the Telly..

Patch! Reuse, recycle!

Lifebeganat50 · 12/03/2024 10:01

I used to do this all the time. I did it from the inside and ran over it a few times with the sewing machine, you couldn’t see it when I was wearing them (because my arse was so huge😳)

EBearhug · 12/03/2024 10:25

As an anside, and not aimed at the OP specifically, this absurd idea that something has to be binned the moment it isn’t ‘as new‘ is truly baffling. Has it really come to the point that repairing isn’t seen as a viable option?

I agree - someone I knew was going to bin her jeans because the rear pocket was starting to hang loose - there was no tear, just the stitching round the pocket had gone. It would never have occurred to me to bin something for that, and I was shocked she hadn't considered fixing it - an easy mending job. If she didn't have the sewing skills herself, I'm sure she would have known someone, though I am making some assumptions about dance teachers and altering costumes here.

It isn't really to do with the jeans, although cheaper stretchy ones wear quicker than heavy non stretch cotton denim.

It is more to do with the shape of your pelvis and thighs plus the way you walk.

If you get thigh chaffing then you will probably also wear your jeans in the same places.

Kalevala · 12/03/2024 10:40

They can be darned by going back and forth over the area with a sewing machine. I'd pay for someone who knows what they are doing with the right equipment.

TeaAndStrumpets · 12/03/2024 10:44

Curvy DD2 always wore her jeans through just there, I would put some thin fabric behind and zig zag back and forth with the machine so it was more darned than patched.

In my student days many years ago we would make a feature of the patches by using contrasting florals etc. Probably a bit too hippy nowadays!

I too am shocked at people just throwing out clothes that are repairable. Money to burn, obviously.

TeaAndStrumpets · 12/03/2024 10:44

Snap Kalevala !

SheepAndSword · 12/03/2024 11:05

@JesusMaryAndJosephAndTheWeeDon I guess I only wear old Levis so it's thicker denim. I did once have cuts below each buttock at the back (non Levi), no idea how that happened. They went in the bin.

My DH also only wears thick non-stretch denim Levi's. They still need patching.

Or they don't have sewing machines? Or were never taught how to sew?

persisted · 12/03/2024 15:41

I would bin them, any raised bit or seam from a patch would chafe and irritate me constantly. I have to cut all the labels out for the same reason.

Tears in other places where it doesn't rub I repair, hems, small holes etc.

TheLovleyChebbyMcGee · 12/03/2024 15:51

I have thick thighs and always patch my jeans! I find using a soft, slightly stretchy fabric to cover a large area on the inside of the jeans the best. So like a jersey or French Terry fabric, I do sew though and have a good stash of fabric to choose from, I do recycle old clothes, I've got an old pair of joggers that are a good colour match and are getting chopped up to use as patches!

TeaAndStrumpets · 12/03/2024 16:17

Wheresthescissors · 12/03/2024 15:40

Good point, I suppose it's not necessarily taught in schools. We always had a sewing machine growing up, I even made my own wedding dress ;-) My Mum was of the wartime generation who would make do and mend. We had a lot of homemade clothes growing up, 5 kids and not much money!

Timeforabiscuit · 12/03/2024 16:25

I always patchy inside with the iron on repair fabric they use for reinforcing kids knees on school trousers.

I use a fairly generous patch and they last really well.

I patch early when a weakness shows, someone would really be getting an eyeful to try and spot it!

NeverDropYourMooncup · 12/03/2024 16:29

If you do patch them, make the patches very large, from seam to seam - otherwise, as your legs are already rubbing together, you're very likely to end up with blisters due to the stitching and edges of the material.

mogtheexcellent · 12/03/2024 16:32

I do a large iron on patch on the inside.
