To be a bit concerned about what the lady at the pharmacy said

So My friend recommended co-codamol for period pains, since have had my coil put in, my periods have become so much more painful. I asked the lady behind the counter if they were good and she said "I don't know, I wouldn't take them if you paid me". What was the reason for this? now I dont know if I should take them.

I wouldn’t be concerned about taking it taking it once or twice a month. But I’d be more concerned about why the coil is making your periods more painful. Think I’d be seeing a doctor and asking why!

My ex had really bad toothache once, nothing was helping, he took a prescribed Co-codamol and it knocked him out! He was soundo !
nut that was prescribed strength

Well I take them and have for a while but unfortunately if I run out I have the most awful, awful withdrawal symptoms and trust me you don’t want them.
Paracetamol are equally effective on period pain.
I am sure other Mumsnetters can assist you good luck 😉

I was prescribed them for a head injury. Bloody awful things, knocked me right out for hours at a time. Never again!

It's so weird how people react so differently!
I was on 60mg x 4 daily plus diazepam plus oral morphine and was working FT in a demanding job without even noticing I was on them

Although the dentist did have to numb me 3 times the other week to do a filling as well

I think I might just leave it. My friend said thy were great so I just assumed they were a good painkiller.

They are a good pain reliever.
They can cause constipation.
It’s the codeine ingredient that makes them addictive. They should only be taken for a short amount of time.
You’ll sleep well. Thats a neg though as that’s one reason how they become addictive.
Hope this helps.

Codeine is an opioid
Opiods are addictive
They are recommended for short term use, no longer than three days consecutively
I personally think they should be prescription only medication as they are commonly absused

People in pain don’t get addicted to painkillers as the pain receptors take up the analgesic and there is none left in your system to get you high. Addiction happens when people without pain take them or their pain requirement lowers (eg after an injury heals) but they keep taking the same amount.

This isn't true at all. I got very addicted to Tramadol very quickly after a serious accident. Very common to become addicted to painkillers after injury.

If you go onto the addiction board you’ll see that the TOP most posted addictions are these!

This. I was on oxycodone for 7 days in hospital and by day 8 I felt like my bones were trying to escape my skin, wanted to scratch my skin off, chills, headaches. I forced myself to come off it cold turkey there and then as it was unlike anything I had ever had before.
