Why does this phrase make me cringe and very angry and think, Who the F cares?

DistinguishedSocialCommentator · 10/03/2024 21:56

This is the phrase and i see it at least once a day if not more so

"Name changed..." for this thread/etc.

Why post that? No one will know if you used another name. What's the ruddy point of this? Am I missing something?

If you posted as a regular as XXXX69 then went on to post about something you felt uncomfortable about - why the heck do you have to make an announcement like the above? Seriously, have I missed the boat or is it a secret code on MN?

AIBU to feel like this or are you with me?

I think it’s to indicate they are a regular poster rather than a troll

Was about to say this. Some posters make a habit of searching the posts of people they disagree with and pointing out they're 'a new poster'.

Your posts are getting more and more irritable. Put the internet down and go and have a nice bath or a stiff whisky or something instead.

I very much concur with this! Time for a nice cup of tea and a sleep op.

Do you concur Wink?

DistinguishedSocialCommentator · 10/03/2024 22:09

DappledThings · 10/03/2024 22:07

So that derails the thread and turns it into Swiss cheese when half the posts are removed for troll hunting.

It's just a regular poster trying to pre-empt that derailment and keep their own thread on track.

Not sure why it's wound you up so much.

Well, "troll hunting is against the rules", right!

Often, "trolls" will call others a "troll." It is MNHQ
that decided

A genuine poster would not go around calling others a "troll" but would report or ignore.

So, I still can't see the point of "name change." Who cares!

I recognise several friends on here all the time. If their DH had an affair and they sought advice I wouldn't want to know it was them; what an invasion of privacy that would be.

I think you’ve missed the point of OP’s thread

Nobody in concurrence with @DistinguishedSocialCommentator as yet.😉

I totally agree with you, OP.

"long-term user, NC for this thread. " ===> WHO CARES???

DistinguishedSocialCommentator · 10/03/2024 22:07

Have you not read my subesquent posts?

Lets say you was new, whats stopping you from saying "name change" when its not?

Nothing at all. I didn't say it was foolproof...just explained why people write it.
I thought if you understood it would annoy you less.
I didn't invent it.

BeingATwatItsABingThing · 10/03/2024 22:11

You’ve been given an explanation. Yes, MNHQ can verify either way but it massively ruins a thread with a load of trollhunting if people are waffling about it being a first post.

Yes, a troll could post it too but you can’t blame people for wanting to avoid the derailing.

I agree

I asked MNHQ, why others could not see the "thanks" FM receive as IMO it was not helpful. Thanks to MNHQ, they came back and told me why, which I totally agree with

I actually raised a question with MNHQ about the ! thanks not being visible and the name changes and why this was allowed. Actually, based on their response,, it doe make it a better site than the others I post on.

So??

So?? What?
You asked the question so I answered
That is why posters do it. I didn't say it was a foolproof way of proving you're not a troll. I said that's why some posters do it.

OutOfTheHouse · 10/03/2024 22:14

DistinguishedSocialCommentator · 10/03/2024 22:01

I doubt that as MNHQ would know if they were a "troll" or not.
Do you concur?

MNHQ don’t read every post. There is a real chance of the thread being full of ‘interesting first post’ comments otherwise.

Do you concur?

No, MNHQ didn't decide that. Lots of genuine posters call others trolls even if it is against the rules. Those posts get removed. Which leaves threads with lots of deleted posts and hard to follow.

Stating "NC, not a new poster" vastly reduces that behaviour.

You really are making less sense with each post.

"Derailing!, I agree.

however, a genuine FM that has been offended etc or feels the new poster is a "troll" would report to MNHQ who will have more info than me or you.

Honestly, I do not see the point of saying "name changed."

People's lives are very complexed and we get incredibly unusual posts but as they say, facts can be stranger than fiction

If I feel a thread is a wind-up, I'd just ignore it or report it if I was concerned it was a vulnerable user.

People like to feel clever that they’ve ‘found’ a troll. Just reporting and moving on is not as satisfying for them.

pictoosh · 10/03/2024 22:21

I've seen someone just write "chinny reckon" in response to a suspected troll.
That made me laugh.

DappledThings · 10/03/2024 22:23

DistinguishedSocialCommentator · 10/03/2024 22:18

Yes, actually trolls who are new are far les likely to be aware of the MN custom of explaining why they appear to be a new poster even if they aren't.

Nobody's claimed it's a fool-proof system, but it isn't illogical either.

DistinguishedSocialCommentator · 10/03/2024 22:23

You've hit the nail squarely on the head.
I've never called any poster on any site a "troll."
I find this word is often over-sued and wrongly used often because the person/s they are calling "troll" has won or has won the debate.

Looking at the voting, I'm definitely not alone in feeling like what I feel about the 2name change" as it does make me think, WTF, there was no need for that.
