Why does this phrase make me cringe and very angry and think, Who the F cares?

DistinguishedSocialCommentator · 10/03/2024 21:56

This is the phrase and i see it at least once a day if not more so

"Name changed..." for this thread/etc.

Why post that? No one will know if you used another name. What's the ruddy point of this? Am I missing something?

If you posted as a regular as XXXX69 then went on to post about something you felt uncomfortable about - why the heck do you have to make an announcement like the above? Seriously, have I missed the boat or is it a secret code on MN?

AIBU to feel like this or are you with me?

Agreed

EffortlesslyInelegant · 10/03/2024 21:58

Christ on a crystal meth binge. Whatever next?

Pippa12 · 10/03/2024 21:58

I think it’s to indicate they are a regular poster rather than a troll

Ithinkitstimeforbed · 10/03/2024 21:59

Well when people don’t say they’ve named changed and it’s a remotely controversial topic someone inevitably posts “interesting first post, OP” and insinuates they’re a troll- so I guess they’re pre-empting that?

OutOfTheHouse · 10/03/2024 21:59

It’s so that if they post something unusual they don’t get a barrage of ‘interesting first post’.

LadyNijo · 10/03/2024 21:59

For heaven’s sake, this isn’t complicated. People say this so that the first six replies don’t say ‘interesting first post, OP. They are saying they’re a regular but have name changed so no one who might happen to advance search them and recognise them from details about job, location, children’s hobbies (because people do) will get to know about their STD, swinging or crush on the Ocado delivery man.

RightOnTheEdge · 10/03/2024 22:00

I think posters feel they should write that otherwise if it's a bit of a dramatic or sensitive subject you get other posters questioning if it's real and writing sarcastic comments like
"Interesting first post OP!"

ShirleyPhallus · 10/03/2024 22:00

Its from the olden days when it used to be so easy to AS a poster, and you only had a few hundred posters on the site

Now, thanks to MN’s “improved” search function which is way less effective, it’s difficult to do anyway so doesn’t matter

DistinguishedSocialCommentator · 10/03/2024 22:01

Pippa12 · 10/03/2024 21:58

I doubt that as MNHQ would know if they were a "troll" or not.
Do you concur?

Immemorialelms · 10/03/2024 22:01

I recognise several friends on here all the time. If their DH had an affair and they sought advice I wouldn't want to know it was them; what an invasion of privacy that would be.

It's just this.

Donthideyourlight · 10/03/2024 22:02

It's so that people don't advance search them, see it's the first and only thread created under that name and (wrongly) assume they're a troll

StormKevin · 10/03/2024 22:02

I take it you are new here, OP

Edited

So? MNHQ will decide

Indeed, a "troll" could put down they've "name changed" does that stop making them a "troll"?

Do you concur?

I understand if it’s sensitive, but you get ‘NC’d for this…..Does anyone have tips for a great lasagne?’

Imagine the accusations - ‘you have no previous posts - you are clearly a sick and twisted lasagne troll. Reported.’

Pollyannamex · 10/03/2024 22:03

Don’t forget when they have to list every ‘famous’ mumsnet thread after to prove it

Other posters, not MNHQ…

pictoosh · 10/03/2024 22:04

Regular under name change - I am not a troll. It's an interesting post but not my first. I understand the dynamic and nuances of the forum. I don't want this connected to my usual username.

Maybe you'll gnash your teeth over it less now OP.

Yes.

Are you usually this confused and irritated by very minor online habits?

So??

OP posts:
RemarkablyBrightCreature · 10/03/2024 22:07

Everyone has explained why yet you refuse to accept the explanations! 🤷‍♀️

DappledThings · 10/03/2024 22:07

DistinguishedSocialCommentator · 10/03/2024 22:05

So??

So that derails the thread and turns it into Swiss cheese when half the posts are removed for troll hunting.

It's just a regular poster trying to pre-empt that derailment and keep their own thread on track.

Not sure why it's wound you up so much.

Lets say you was new, whats stopping you from saying "name change" when its not?

Your posts are getting more and more irritable. Put the internet down and go and have a nice bath or a stiff whisky or something instead.
