Argument over Ryanair baggage

Easipeelerie · 10/03/2024 11:39

We’re going away for 5 nights. I can’t see how I’ll feel comfortable trying to put everything into one small case. DP is a skinflint and thinks all you need to take is a pair of pants and your passport.
Ryanair don’t seem to let you get one 20 kg bag for one of the passengers only. I’ve suggested we book our flights separately but partner worried if we do that there’ll be a cock up in the booking process.
What shall I do? Any easy way for me to get my 20 kg bag?

OP posts:

You can add one bag. There's a page where you can add bags for all passengers, ignore that, later on there's another page where you can add single items.

Clearinguptheclutter · 10/03/2024 11:45

You def can just add less cases than people. Four of us went on hols and I just paid for one case. Skip the bit where it tries to sell you all a “package”- you can add on individual bits later in the process.

just book it and add a single case. Also think about the hand baggage limits. They’re extremely small. So you might also want to purchase at least one larger cabin bag between you- for this I think it is anything up to ten kilos.

Herdinggoats · 10/03/2024 11:46

And then don’t let tight sod add a “few little bits” to your case.

Janek · 10/03/2024 11:46

You can add things for individual passengers. I think it's later on in the booking process. It's also cheaper to do it that way (possibly because it it's only an additional bag and not a booked seat too). Try a dummy booking and experiment.

But I'm with your DP, you could definitely manage with a Ryanair size bag for five days!!!

Glitterybee · 10/03/2024 11:47

As above you definitely can add a bag for one passenger!

BIWI · 10/03/2024 11:47

If you’re going away somewhere where it’s going to be hot, you definitely can manage with just hand luggage, for only 5 nights!

No, you can, it doesn't mean others and the OP can. You don't know what they need to take.

BranchGold · 10/03/2024 11:50

I’ve just booked my flights to Europe with British airways, as it was cheaper than Ryanair/easyjet/wizz when you take luggage into account.

Now you have to pay an additional fee for anything more than a backpack, they aren’t all that much cheaper.
Have you compared the total costs with other airlines?

ItsMeNotTheProblem · 10/03/2024 11:50

Have you already added the small case on OP?
They’re no longer included in the fare for Ryanair and it’s a handbag/underseat bag only.

teenagetantrums · 10/03/2024 11:53

We always book one case between two off us for hold on Ryan air, unless they have changed it last few months. So take one 20kg hold bag and then just one cabin one, even though we could take two cabin bags

Agree. We did Ryan Air with just hand luggage for a 3 night trip last yr. Never again, the liquids situation was a nightmare. Some people don't need to take alot, some people do! I definitely do.

Well, if there’s a concern over the cost, ( which it sounds like there is) then paring stuff down would be sensible, wouldn’t it? Take what you need rather than everything you might want!

puzzledout · 10/03/2024 11:55

I've deffo done one case between two! As PP says it's at the end of the check in system I believe.

NameChangedAgainn · 10/03/2024 11:56

You can add one bag later on.
The handbag/under seat bag with Ryanair is very small but I can pack for a few days in their hand luggage, so I do hand luggage only unless it's to somewhere hot where I will want to pack suncream and bug spray etc, but that doesn't mean I expect everyone else to be able to.
We find easyjet better value as the hand luggage is more reasonable but the prices are similar.

Marsayla · 10/03/2024 12:06

you can add bags singly, just keep clicking through. Or give your partner half your stuff to put in his bag if he has so much space!

A RyanAir sized bag is 40cm x 25cm x 20cm and must fit under the seat in front. Anything else is chargeable

Yes, it is.

Scarletttulips · 10/03/2024 12:45

Some airports now have new scanners so you don’t need to worry about liquids.

A case costing £40 V picking up shampoo and conditioner in boots in the airport £10 - not worth payi g for.

KnottyKnitting · 10/03/2024 12:48

It's nearly always cheaper to add luggage on after you have booked your flights. I booked some flights to Faro a few weeks ago. One cabin bag was £35 each way. I declined and went back in and the price was £20 each way!

AsTheyPulledYouOutOfTheOxygenTent · 10/03/2024 12:49

You can manage with just a RyanAir carry on, but if the OP would find the holiday more relaxing/enjoyable with a bigger suitcase of stuff (eg with all her normal hair and makeup and three pairs of shoes for different occasions) and she thinks that extra level of comfort is worth the cost then that's not a moral failing

Mementomorissons · 10/03/2024 12:50

Yeah you can definitely add a bag for only one passenger. I did this last week for flights I booked with them. You just click on the passenger's name and add a bag to it

travelmadmum23 · 10/03/2024 12:52

We did a few city breaks last year with just the small backpack allowance. Amazing how much you can fit in when everything is packed tightly and only take essentials. I took it as a challenge and as a family of 4 with 4 small backpacks we managed fine. You can add single bags on further through the booking process.

Zwicky · 10/03/2024 12:58

I haven’t booked with Ryanair for ages so I’m probably out of date but in the past I’ve booked seats using separate bookings because it said everyone needed the same number of bags and I’ve also done it though a booking website where it was slightly different from booking it direct and you could choose the number of bags. How will the booking go wrong if you do it with 2 bookings? I don’t think it’s skinflint to not want to pay extra for a 20kg bag that you aren’t taking.

Scarletttulips · 10/03/2024 12:58

It is, it’s adding to the fuel consumption and isn’t necessary for a few days - I’ve seen many people taking far too much stuff away it’s ridiculous - half the case comes back clean.

Capsule wardrobe is the way forward.

Lovingitallnow · 10/03/2024 13:00

I thought the exact same about Ryanair, you pick the type of ticket you want for everyone and later have the option of additional bags.
