To think this is terrible? Interview

Wantt · 10/03/2024 08:20

Recently there were many jobs advertised working in a large supermarket warehouse. My son and two of his mates applied. (All aged 18). Mate A was late for the interview, he was not great in the interview when answering questions and part of the interview was to load a crate with cans of pop and laundry detergent. He wasn’t good at this.
unsurprisingly he wasn’t offered a job. My son and mate B got a position.

Since then a picture of mate A has been printed out (from the photo ID when he signed in at the interview) and put up in the staff canteen with the slogan dunce interviewee of the month.

I think this is really bad and if I was his parent would be very annoyed!

is this acceptable?

No, it's not acceptable. What a horrible work environment.

Surely a breach of GDPR too?

Topicmanger · 10/03/2024 08:22

That’s really, really horrible. What a bullying culture. They will know that staff members are likely to know that individual.
I am sure we have all done shit interviews and they are mortifying enough without that!

Babsexxx · 10/03/2024 08:23

That’s awful!!! Is the friend aware?! Truly horrible get your son to take a photo and send it to hr!

Blackhorse32 · 10/03/2024 08:24

Not appropriate.

PSEnny · 10/03/2024 08:25

Not okay. Management have created this culture and should be held to account for it. It might be hard for your son to report as it will be obvious it was him and there is clearly a bullying culture.

Yes, it is, unless they have "your image will be displayed in our staff canteen for entertainment purposes" in their privacy policy, although I doubt that would be considered one of the legitimate reasons for processing the data.

ThePoshUns · 10/03/2024 08:27

That's a terrible thing to do.

BobbyBiscuits · 10/03/2024 08:28

I'm not sure if it breaches data protection, if it's just a photo. But if it has his name and other info then it would be. Your son should take a pic of it and send it to HR. I don't know if it's worth confronting whoever it was that instigates this nasty behaviour. They could make your son's life very difficult at work.
Just imagine if the person had a disability and was being mocked for being a 'dunce'? That's bang out of order.

Maddy70 · 10/03/2024 08:30

Awful thing to to do. He must not tell his friend as a he would be terribly hurt and b. He might get into trouble at work. He will be on a probationary period so keep his head down

Wantt · 10/03/2024 08:30

Glad I’m not the only one who thinks this is awful! My son doesn’t really want to get involved though. (He’s obviously new and wants to just fit in and not ruffle any feathers). I don’t think they’ve told mate A. It’s quite awkward.

Wantt · 10/03/2024 08:31

Yes he’s on probation - not sure how long for and really wants this job to be ‘the one’.

OP posts:
WhatNoRaisins · 10/03/2024 08:33

That's a symptom of a nasty work culture. I hope your DS doesn't stay long.

Wantt · 10/03/2024 08:38

The thing is though (and I don’t agree with it at all) it seems to be the ‘culture’ or ‘banter’ in these types of jobs (warehouse / factory jobs) and I’m not sure anyone else sees it as bullying. I just think it’s awful, I would be so upset if I were his mum.

Runnerduck34 · 10/03/2024 08:39

Absolutely disgusting- I'd be looking for another job.
Horrendous environment to work in- clearly a culture of bullying from management.
Id be taking a photo as evidence and reporting it- but probably after I left. Also If I had a chance I would be removng that sign and destroying it.
But understand how difficult it is for your son.
If it was a Saturday job- non essential- I'd be wanting him to leave such a toxic environment and helping him write a complaint to head office and reporting it as a GDPR breach.

Bumblebeeinatree · 10/03/2024 08:45

Is this an official notice board or has someone taken it on themselves to post it as a really bad joke?

If I could I would take it down when no one was watching.

Itscatsallthewaydown · 10/03/2024 08:47

Fucking hell that’s grim behaviour. Totally unacceptable.

Yes, that's what I was thinking. This is in no way an appropriate use of someone's personal data.

Pictures fall within gdpr as they can identify the individual.

I'm a bit out of date now with the regs but I'm fairly sure this could be a reportable breach as it could negatively impact his "rights and freedoms" e.g. knowing how common it is for people to move to similar companies it could affect his future employment opportunities if someone recognises The Dunce Interviewee (yes, its a stretch.....would be for the ICO to decide)

Turnthelightoff · 10/03/2024 09:31

I’d get a photo of it to DSs friend who can then make a complaint and hopefully get some sort of gesture to apologise, I’m thinking money.

Forhecksake · 10/03/2024 09:40

If they allow this sort of behaviour, god knows what else they'll allow.

My advice would be to get a photo of it and leak it anonymously. Either by "name & shame" in social media or by emailing the store's corporate office.

NoIamcactusius · 10/03/2024 09:46

That’s awful. Agree that it should be reported but your son needs to be careful he’s not linked to the reporting of it if he wants the job. Good for him for seeing it as something that is wrong and not going along with it.

BobbyBiscuits · 10/03/2024 09:48

@Megifer Yes, you are right. The photo was only to be used for the interview process, not to be shown to everyone after they were rejected for the job and mocked. It should have been in a private file, and possibly deleted after a set number of days. It breaches employment law I think? The guy could probably seek compensation, or threaten the legal route.

AyrshireTryer · 10/03/2024 09:52

The employer has shown what they are like. Believe them. They will be like this to your som and his friend. Get him to gain experience and then move on. You and he don't need him to be working in a toxic environment.

heldinadream · 10/03/2024 09:52

This would be the most delicious outcome as it would also prove the lad not to be any kind of dunce but to be perfectly savvy and competent thank you very much.

They'd very much have egg on their faces.
