To think this is terrible? Interview

Recently there were many jobs advertised working in a large supermarket warehouse. My son and two of his mates applied. (All aged 18). Mate A was late for the interview, he was not great in the interview when answering questions and part of the interview was to load a crate with cans of pop and laundry detergent. He wasn’t good at this.
unsurprisingly he wasn’t offered a job. My son and mate B got a position.

Since then a picture of mate A has been printed out (from the photo ID when he signed in at the interview) and put up in the staff canteen with the slogan dunce interviewee of the month.

I think this is really bad and if I was his parent would be very annoyed!

is this acceptable?

Horrible and pretty sure a breach of GDPR. They had no business keeping his personal data, which includes photos, when they had not employed him. And using it in this was is not acceptable. Maybe worth getting legal advice/going to Citizen’s Advice.

Commonsense22 · 10/03/2024 09:55

How awful, and how unbelievable they think they can get away with it in this day and age.
I would try to send an anonymous tip-off to a local paper to expose the workplace.

Temporaryanonymity · 10/03/2024 09:55

Your son should look for somewhere else to work. What an awful culture.

fancyfrogs · 10/03/2024 10:06

Horrendous. I'd also be approaching local news outlet anonymously. Poor lad

KimberleyClark · 10/03/2024 10:08

I'm not sure if it breaches data protection, if it's just a photo.

My understanding is that an individual has no rights over their image if taken in a public place, like the street or in a crowd. But in this instance the photo was taken for ID purposes and the individual does have rights over it.

misssunshine4040 · 10/03/2024 10:09

This is horrendous! I would raise hell!

Get your son to photograph the picture etc and send it to the press and shame the hell out them

The thing is though (and I don’t agree with it at all) it seems to be the ‘culture’ or ‘banter’ in these types of jobs (warehouse / factory jobs) and I’m not sure anyone else sees it as bullying. I just think it’s awful, I would be so upset if I were his mum.

I wouldn't call it banter if he doesn't work there. At my previous job in a warehouse someone stuck something on my back and took a photo. She showed me it and asked if she could put it on facebook. I said yeah whatever, I was aware of it. Someone else did something similar but didn't tell me, I told them to take the post down as its not banter when I'm not involved. It's laughing at me not with me.

mumda · 10/03/2024 10:12

How horrid.

I've never worked for the local supermarket but have been in the staff break room to get a cup of tea when volunteering with the food bank.

It needs to be dealt with as it's showing a very nasty culture. Evidence needed first and then action.

whowhatwerewhy · 10/03/2024 10:13

This is awful behaviour on the company's part . Your son would be putting his job at risk if he reported it so he's right in just keeping his head down. Hopefully gain experience and move on .
He could try to take a photo of it and highlight it in his resignation if he gets a new job.

Northernsouloldies · 10/03/2024 10:14

Definitely a bully culture in that workplace,I've saw it before towards apprentices and to someone with a disability and funnily enough it was nearly all male workplace.to be fair the younger guys weren't into that it was a couple of old dinosaurs that kept it going.

Tel12 · 10/03/2024 10:15

I would say that there's a breach of data protection. Info should only be used for the purpose it was gathered for. In this case it's being used to humiliate. However at 18 he is an adult so I don't think that it's up to his parents to do anything. I would imagine that there's a law suit here.

Amberlady · 10/03/2024 10:17

GDPR. You are only allowed to use things for the purpose for which they were intended. Given it’s likely that managers and supervisors also use the canteen you can’t just blame it on some idiot employee. It should have been immediately removed and an investigation about how it got there undertaken. It’s horrendous behaviour.

IsthisthereallifeIsthisjustfantasy · 10/03/2024 11:42

That sounds like a terrible place to work. If it's linked to a major supermarket chain, could consider anonymously leaking to their social media/ to the press?

DancefloorAcrobatics · 10/03/2024 11:49

Horrible.
Just remind your DS that today it's his friend who failed the interview, tomorrow it will be him for not loading something properly.
Advice him to find another job ASAP!

Northernsouloldies · 10/03/2024 11:54

Exactly, that's how it goes in places like that.

JMSA · 10/03/2024 11:55

That's toxic!

PansyOatZebra · 10/03/2024 13:45

It speaks volumes about the work culture. If I was your son I’d be seriously considering if this is where I wanted to work.
