Anyone else receiving letters threatening visits from TV licensing?

I have a TV license as the kids occasionally watch live TV. I’ve always had a TV license and moved it with us when we moved house in Dec 2022.
For most of the time living here I’ve received letters addressed to ‘The legal occupier’ stating that the address doesn’t have a TV license and every time I have logged on to check its still active, which is has been, and called them to explain the situation. They’re always a bit confused and say they can see my license on the system and it must be an error on their system but not to worry as an agent wouldn’t actually visit.
I’ve just received another letter stating that an agent will be visiting on 15th March and I no longer believe they won’t attend.
I can’t call them until Monday at which point I’m going to stress that they are not to send an agent to my property when I’ve had a license for years but is it only me? Anyone else having this issue?

AIBU to demand they not send an agent? I know it wouldn’t take much for me to physically show them proof but why should I l? I’ve called them 6 or 7 times over this and I’m fed up of explaining it over and over again.

Every time I've moved I've had letters saying I don't have a licence, I always change the address on the licence online the day I move (or the day before) along with electricity etc. Then a month later I get the 'threatening' letter saying I don't have a licence.

I got one after I changed my direct debit details recently. They're bloody useless.

"I have a TV that can receive live broadcasts but I never watch it" would not stand up in court. You'd need to get it de-tuned.

Nope, thanks

HAAAAAAH!!

I’m glad I don’t need a licence to view MN - the Capita fans on this thread who steadfastly refuse to acknowledge what the law actually says are providing excellent entertainment 🤣

@WatchandWaitorNot
Erm I created no drama. I answered the door not knowing who it was and a man stuck his foot in my door immediately and said he was investigating my lack of tv license! I told him I didnt want or need a licence and he didn't have my permission to enter my home. He more or less was attempting to barge his way into my home!

Damn right I made a scene!!! I'm not going to be polite to bullying men trying to unlawfully force entry into my home!

When you buy a TV the retailer will inform TVL.

Not anymore they don't!

You are talking utter rubbish!!!

You have been told by multiple people you're talking rubbish!

Wireless Telegraphy Act 1967 if I recall, required anyone renting or selling a TV to collect name and address details, and pass them on to the TVL.
This was scrapped in June......

2013....

Here's a screen shot of a Government Document from around that time discussing it's removal..

"But I know what I'm talking about..."

Do get your TV de-tuned otherwise you have the capability to watch or record TV as it's being broadcast. It's pretty simple really.

98% of households have a TV.

I don't think that's necessary actually. How do you even detune a digital TV? Someone has previously asked about a TV licence fee holiday, where you simply stop watching, and TV Licensing replied that it was perfectly legal.

Just disconnect the aerial, then it can't receive live TV. To detune it, you'd need to do a factory reset, not difficult but you'd lose all your other settings.

Then you can't listen to the radio either. Perfectly legal to use a TV set to listen to radio without a TV licence. The whole thing is a mess and just needs to be scrapped.

MargaretThursday · 10/03/2024 13:49

We didn't have a TV licence for years. They occasionally turned up with the mildest people I'd ever met. Very apologetic and never did more than a quick glance inside and then ticked us off as not needing one.

The only time I got irritated with them was when they sent something telling us that if our circumstances hadn't changed from last time then we didn't need to reply. A fortnight later they sent a letter saying that as we hadn't replied they'd be sending someone round.
I gave both letters to the chap and pointed out that if they'd wanted me to reply then the first letter was at best misleading, and we were not currently looking at getting a TV and if we did get one then we'd get a licence.
He said he's speak to his manager and make sure we were taken off the list, and we didn't receive another letter or visit in the next 8 years (and then we got a licence).

Good point - I rarely use the radio on my TV because the sound quality from my radio is better, so I didn't think of that.

Why not just let him come in and talk to him inside? What were you afraid he would see?

Are you taking the piss?

If Sky TV turned up at your door and asked to come in to see if you have Sky, would you let them in?

If Netflix rocked up and demanded a monthly payment for Netflix, even though you don't want it, would you pay it?

What about Daz? Daz turns up, sees you've got a washing machine, demands £5 because you have the capacity to use Daz.

😂🤪

It's fucking ridiculous.

If a man came to my door and stuck his foot inside my door to stop me from closing it then unless it was a police officer then there is no way in hell I would be wanting to invite him into the house

Are you really so niave as to think the think a woman would fear in this situation is what the man might see 🙄

No one should be trying to shame a woman for not letting a man try to force his way inside their house no matter the reason

What is ridiculous is you using examples of business models that don’t work in the same way as TV licensing does.

So you’re now suggesting that the TV Licensing inspectors pose a threat to women’s personal safety?

Yes thats correct. I was being purposely ridiculous. Well spotted.

And fwiw. Any woman letting random men in their house is taking a risk and I wouldn't blame any one for not letting people they don't know into their house.

They are NOT BBC employees. They have NO POWER of entry without a warrant

They are SALES people, that is all.

gracewitt · 10/03/2024 15:15

Its a generic letter because they think you don't have a licence. I too received one last week telling me to "expect a visit on 15th March or another day" even though I don't have a tv. A couple of years ago I received one telling me they would be visiting on September 31st. 🙄 In all these four years no-one has ever called and the letters continue to arrive at approx one a month.

WatchandWaitorNot · 10/03/2024 15:02

No, I'm suggesting that it's completely okay for a woman not to want to let a man in the house after he's jammed his foot in the door to stop her closing it, regardless of his job unless he's a police officer

This should not be a difficult to understand concept for goodness sake

purplehotdogs · 10/03/2024 15:23

Yes. Never had a TV, still not got one, tell them every year, had an official man round who verified that I do not in fact own a TV...and I am STILL getting threatening letters about them sending someone round to check. It feels like harrassment at this point. I won't be letting anyone into my house again if they do come round to check. It's ridiculous.

Really? Them along with debt collectors and chuggers can stay outside.

I've had a debt collector turn up for the previous owner, I showed him my ID outside, I was mightily pissed off as I was in the middle of work. He came nowhere near my property.

Well if the average person wasn’t so knee-jerk defensive and rude (or trying to cover up licence fee evasion) maybe they would not assume that doors were going to be slammed in their faces? Don’t blame them for trying to stop that happening.

Surely the person at fault there was the previous owner who had not paid their bills? It’s not the debt collector’s fault that they were given your address. Just like it’s not the licence fee inspector’s fault that their system shows you as needing a licence and not having one.

Chuggers can fuck off though, I agree with that.
