Anyone else receiving letters threatening visits from TV licensing?

Newcarforchristmas · 09/03/2024 14:34

I have a TV license as the kids occasionally watch live TV. I’ve always had a TV license and moved it with us when we moved house in Dec 2022.
For most of the time living here I’ve received letters addressed to ‘The legal occupier’ stating that the address doesn’t have a TV license and every time I have logged on to check its still active, which is has been, and called them to explain the situation. They’re always a bit confused and say they can see my license on the system and it must be an error on their system but not to worry as an agent wouldn’t actually visit.
I’ve just received another letter stating that an agent will be visiting on 15th March and I no longer believe they won’t attend.
I can’t call them until Monday at which point I’m going to stress that they are not to send an agent to my property when I’ve had a license for years but is it only me? Anyone else having this issue?

AIBU to demand they not send an agent? I know it wouldn’t take much for me to physically show them proof but why should I l? I’ve called them 6 or 7 times over this and I’m fed up of explaining it over and over again.

I can’t believe you’re moaning about spelling when your own post is littered with spag errors.

Try to comprehend what I said. IE I do not do spell checkers as they often f up ones English to those American lots of spelling. We all make spelling mistakes, no big deal as long as the message clear.

No, you were being supercilious about spelling along with @WatchandWaitorNot .

Not sure why because you keep making mistakes in your own posts, with or without a spell checker.

They won’t send an agent. They never do, it’s just hot air. The next automated letter threatens you with court, just FYI. That’s also just hot air, you never hear any more about it.

Capita have about 7 automated letters that they cycle through every month, you can completely ignore them. We haven’t had a TV since digitalisation (bad reception, we couldn’t get a signal even with a booster). We’ve been getting these letters ever since, and no agent has ever turned up.

My dad has this. He converted the upstairs of his house into a flat so 2 licences were needed. He then converted it back into one house, which only needed one licence. Could he got this through to the licencing people...nope! It was years of threatening letters and phone calls, which as a never done anything wrong in his life pensioner he was quite distressed about. In the end someone turned up, was shown the TV licence and the one house not two flats and it all stopped. I'd stop contacting them, let them come round.

TheNoodlesIncident · 09/03/2024 15:22

OP we're continually getting snarky letters from TV licensing about a property that isn't licensed. We know it's not, and we advised them that the reason the TV licence wasn't renewed was because the householder had died. They acknowledged that and have been sending threatening letters to come round to inspect the property ever since.

We just roll our eyes and recycle their letters. They can send inspectors if they want to, as they're threatening they will, I don't care. The place is totally empty and it's not on us to make up for deficiencies in their own admin.

Everyone else we advised about the bereavement was sympathetic and amended their records so we've had no harassment from anyone else, but the TV Licensing is another level altogether. Just ignore them!

looks like you are just out to cause trouble, shit stir and have your way, ok!

Colliepie · 09/03/2024 15:25

Ignore, ignore, ignore and file their junk in the bin.

They've clearly got oodles of cash to be waste it posting out so much unsolicited junk.

Check out Chillijoncarne on YouTube and you'll soon see, this is common and how to deal with it (basically ignore them). They have money to be burn yet they want more and they'll bombard people with junk mail and threats for more.

No, I just don’t like seeing OPs being bullied for their spelling. I’d say spag pedants are the trouble makers.

wombat15 · 09/03/2024 15:26

I used to get letters. I sent e mails back each time with the license number then ignored. Noone came around but if they had done I would have shown them the license number and told them to go away.

Isis1981uk · 09/03/2024 15:28

I helped manage a student Hall of Residence type place for a few years, and we'd receive letters on a weekly basis from TV Licensing - one for every single room. They'd appear for months, then one would appear in a red envelope to look scary, then another telling you that they were sending agents round on a certain date. They never did turn up. Then a month later the letters would arrive in sequence again. We just binned them immediately and never had a visit. I have a TV license for home, but I'm always tempted to cancel it.

Goldenhandcuffs · 09/03/2024 15:33

I moved out of my house to get extensive building work done and moved our TV L with us to our rental. They Wouldn’t believe there was no one living there or watching TV. After lots of threatening letters they eventually did send someone. Builders answered the door. Walls to Bare brick, holes in walls, bare steels everywhere, clearly no power or water or any amenities in the house and they eventually conceded no one was watching TV in there and stopped the harassment.

Meadowfinch · 09/03/2024 15:34

I had that. I had a licence and still got threatening letters. I kept phoning & writing & they still kept threatening me.

So I collected up all the threats and a photocopy of my licence, and wrote to their CEO, telling him his company's behaviour was verging on abusive, that I had a licence and could he please desist from his nasty bullying behaviour. Basically I turned into my mother 😁

I got a letter back, apologising, saying that they had my house down as two dwellings (which it hadn't been for at least 20 years) and assuring me that there would be no more threats.

I never had another peep out of them.

As your own post demonstrates, anyone can make a mistake so stop correcting people, this is a chat forum not an online school for teachers.

Lord, I've seen countless posts from teachers on here which make me wince.

NoSnowdrop · 09/03/2024 15:40

I’d cancel it and complain about their harassment too. Plenty of choice now we can stream tv whenever we like. Fuck them!

YouDidntEvenAskIfSheWasThereMoriarty · 09/03/2024 15:04

They won't come. I've had three years of those letters.

The most exciting thing that's happened is that they sometimes send one in a red envelope instead of white so I know they're Serious This Time.

Yeah me too🤣
The letters start off quite nice and then they become increasingly threatening until the cycle starts again.

PoundlandColumbo · 09/03/2024 15:41

Royalbloo · 09/03/2024 14:44

Does your house have a name as well as a number? Is it number 20 and also "Something Cottage"?

If so they have one address with a licence and one without. It's just a case or joining them up.

If only it was this simple. I'm in this exact situation, our house has a name and a number. The TV licensing people have it as two separate addresses on their database. I've told them this but they seem to be incapable of sorting it out so I just ignore the letters. After about 2 years of letters they did send an agent out. I explained again, showed him my licence. He admitted he'd no idea what to do in this scenario so he just left. And the letters started again. I just bin them now. I'm not wasting my time ringing them again.

So it was ‘right’ for OP to be corrected but ‘unnecessary’ for you to be corrected. The hypocrisy is amazing.

Mrsbeauxjingles · 09/03/2024 15:54

Why was @WatchandWaitorNot 's post deleted?

They were only correcting the OP's spelling with dry humour and OP them self took it in good humour.

Bizarre.

LadyNijo · 09/03/2024 15:55

We didn’t have a TV for years, and this was pre- tv channel players etc, so we literally never watched tv. We used to get letters from the licence people all the time. I eventually got tired of replying and telling them we didn’t have a tv. I was actually quite tickled when an inspector finally showed up at the door, invited him in and said he was welcome to search our tiny central London flat for a concealed television. He was very nice, we had a laugh, and he went away and took our address off some list.

Mollyplop999 · 09/03/2024 15:58

They are useless and use bullying tactics . We've not had a TV for 25 years and do not watch anything that is live. Despite this thry send threatening letters every year. Every year we fill in the declaration and then we receive another letter to say they may send an agent. Once many years ago someone did turn up. It was a foul day and his shoes were covered in mud. My husband told him he was welcome to come in if he removed his shoes. He refused so my DH wouldn't let him in.

I had this when I moved. I got so fed up with it that I called them and asked them to let me know when they were going to visit and I would put the kettle on. Just ignore it

Anotherparkingthread · 09/03/2024 16:13

I don't have a TV license or watch any TV. They send me letters and I just ignore them. The cost of sending a man to my house, only for me to tell him to bugger off, is going to become prohibitively expensive for them, as most young people only stream now and definately can't be arsed replying to letters. Let them do it til they realise it's not financially viable.

enchantedsquirrelwood · 09/03/2024 16:15

If they do come, just open an upstairs window, tell them you have a licence, that they need to check their records properly and to go away.

If you live in a bungalow, just shout it through the letterbox.
