Are the Americans stupid for allowing Biden to go for another term?

At Mr Biden's age, if I'm as fit and alert as he is, I'd be more than happy.

However, he is supposed to be a president and a president of a of a superpower. Therefore, you will agree with me the man is not cut out to be a president of a nation like the USA. He'd be ok for smaller countries that do not have an importance i the world like the USA but not for the uSA

IMO, those that are pulling the strings are actually hurting a half decent man. For the record, I'm nor for, not agaist his poltical party.

Possibly, some that are running the show, pulling the strings were hoping to step into Bidens shoes if he had a fall or a big moment, don't know.

AIBU to feel his is not the right man for the job?

Absolutely this

Can't Obama come back or his wife or one of his children??!

@hollyblueivy Nope, presidents are limited to two terms.

I imagine that having seen the realities of the job, Michelle Obama is far too smart to want it. 😂

You need to be extremely rich to take on the party machinery (and coffers) by standing as an independent. Only two people have attempted it in modern times. One of them won - because the Republicans ended up endorsing him as theirs. The other was (billionaire) Ross Perot in 1992

Yeah, I thought maybe she was eking out a losing campaign to build a profile without having to find new donors but yeah actually trying to win an election is insanely expensive. But you never know, there may be people amenable to having a rummage around in their pockets if it avoids biden and trump.

Herdinggoats · 08/03/2024 17:11

He makes trump look like a better option, which is fucking terrifying.

Barely. Trump also makes the kind of mistakes Biden does - mixes up world leaders, confuses Nikki Haley with Nancy Pelosi, got Melania's name wrong, is barely coherent sentence to sentence half the time.

Zanatdy · 08/03/2024 17:10

In a country that size it’s absolute madness that these are the best 2 guys for the job? But then we can’t think they are mad for choosing Biden when this is a country that elected Trump, and likely will again. The world has gone mad

Next thing will be Nigel Farage as PM! Seems unthinkable - but the unthinkable has happened so many times recently that few things would surprise me now! 🤣

Mammajay · 08/03/2024 19:52

Imagine a senile Trump... he's not much younger than Biden. Given the poor options, I'd vote for Biden.

Noicant · 08/03/2024 19:54

Ponderingwindow · 08/03/2024 18:15

With the way our primary system works, we don’t really get much say in the candidates. Yes, some years there is actually a bit of a race, but the democrats didn’t actually provide any other candidates so it is Biden or Biden.

the most logical alternative is our vice-president. There are a large number of people who won’t vote for a woman though. There are an even larger number of people who won’t vote for a black woman. Trump got into office the first time in large part because his opponent was female. That shifted the vote just enough in his favor. The Democrats can’t risk that again.

it might be different if Biden had died in office and VP Harris had the opportunity to serve as President and prove her metal.

I’m not sure I’d have much confidence in Harris, I watched the most god awful word salad speech she made. It was shambolic. Pains me to say it as I was rooting for her.

ThirtyThrillionThreeTrees · 08/03/2024 19:55

Am....didn't a lot of British people vote for Brexit?

People in glasshouses and all that!

Yes, I agree with you but sometimes voting results don't make a lot of sense.

tiktokontheclock · 08/03/2024 19:56

The democrats have lots of polling that shows he is their best chance at winning.

He's hinted himself he probably wouldn't be running if it weren't for Trump and the risks he poses to the nation.

Did you watch the SOTU yesterday? He showed when he needs to pull it out of the bag he will.

Given the choice I’d vote Biden, at least I’d be fairly sure he wasn’t uber grifting or trying to enrich himself at every turn or starting an insurrection. The man is a genuine threat to democracy, I’m not one for hysterics but his behaviour is so appalling and so anti-democratic and venal that I would rather vote for a donkey than vote for him.

I also think he would turn away from the world stage, Ukraine could kiss funding and arms goodbye. He’s weirdly a dove not a hawk but the reality is sometimes ( very rarely) the americans are very much needed to project power. Ukraine is one of the places that need a present America.

unsync · 08/03/2024 19:58

How do you feel about Trump though?

That wouldn’t surprise me anymore, 5yrs ago yes but now anything is possible

I'm wondering what the perspective of the American people is on this. It would be interesting to hear from one of our American mumsnetters about their view on the two candidates. I am aghast that these two old men seem to be the only choice that they are being offered. It's horrifying to look at from the point of view of those of us outside the USA but I can't imagine what this must feel like to someone living in the US.

DistinguishedSocialCommentator · 08/03/2024 20:06

I agree with the vast majoirty of posts

Having a president like Biden who the media portrays as a a confused clown is so embarrassing for the Amemricans. It reminds me of the time we had owr clown and a dangerous one at that, Liz Truss. Yes, she blames everyone but herself for the hyper inflation, staggering interest rates and the after math. England was a a laughing stock when she took to number ten thanks to those that voted for her - I bet you if it was just up to the MP's she would have never got in/ Millions are paying the price for her actions.

I'm assuming those proping up Biden are and were hoping he'd move aside and they could step in but the old guy proved to be very resisliant. I guess those that control him are thinking, second time lucky

TBH, I feel sorry for Biden due to the ridicule etc in the media even by the outlets that were initially bugging him up

There's at least one American mumsnetter who has posted on the thread. I'll make it two.

Strong Biden supporters and strong Trump supporters are happy to see their preferred candidate on the ballot. Everyone else is unhappy about it.

Can you imagine how it feels to be an even vaguely intelligent American right now, I really feel for them

Like when Boris was elected?

But no one really voted for Liz Truss!!

Meowandthen · 08/03/2024 20:13

I think Biden and Trump are too old but as Trump is a dangerous sociopath I’d prefer to see Biden and the Democrats in office.

Boris was a diabolically bad PM (possibly the worst ever) but better than Trump by several magnitudes.

DistinguishedSocialCommentator · 08/03/2024 20:15

Changeusernameseeusernamehistory · 08/03/2024 20:11

But no one really voted for Liz Truss!!

The so-called 'membership' did. I bet you Mr Sunak had no chance of getting in if it went to the 'membership.'

TBH, the people that vote, vote in all PM' and that a fact. These facts are simple, when you vote, you full well know that if one PM is stabbed in the back by its own MP's or is aaarested, sent to prison, flees the country etc etc, you are aware of the process of the next leadder/PM. So the Turss was indeed voted in

I’d agree with this, he wasn’t great but Trump is downright worrying. I think also it’s the American system, in a cabinet system your colleagues will ditch you and there is nothing anyone else can do about it. It’s nigh on impossible to get rid of a sitting president.

PedestrianPete · 08/03/2024 20:23

Even if Trump had been an otherwise exceptional President, with a character beyond reproach - he tried to steal and election, and at the very, very least, leveraged violence to advance his aims.

He really should be in prison.

ProbablyHungry · 08/03/2024 20:33

I honestly cannot believe that a convicted sex offender with $540m in legal fees outstanding (and counting) is allowed to run for president.

What the actual FUCK???

Which is it?

"Those propping up Biden"?
"Those pulling his strings"?

Your posts here are just verbiage into which you keep slipping in these phrases which are lifted straight from fascist sites.

Where do you get this idea that someone is "controlling" Biden?

You need to explain your use of this very insidious kind of phrase.

You also need to explain why you are proposing the notion that Biden is being ridiculed by media across the spectrum of editorial opinion.

My strong impression of coverage is that it is only Fox pundits and points even further Right that have taken this line.

They have done this because the economy is doing fine, unemployment is low, and Biden's seasoned and steady hand continues to manage two major global conflicts. They think this is the only point they can score against him.
