Mirena coil

Posting for traffic 😳
Could I ask for mirena coil experiences?
I have been suggested one today by the gynae. I have never taken contraception or had coil etc so I’m apprehensive. Mainly due to the increased breast cancer risk. Yes I’m a worrier.

It was hell.
2 stone weight gain, awful fatigue & mood swings and endless spotting or bleeding for the whole time I had it in. I had to beg repeatedly to have it removed, I had it in around 11 months by the time I managed to get it removed.

katcatkat · 08/03/2024 14:28

Brilliant for me no or very light periods after the first few months.
Huge reduction in my very severe pmt
I'm about to have my 3rd one fitted

Dulra · 08/03/2024 14:28

I've had mine in for 4 years. Best thing I ever done. My periods were very heavy and long prior to it. Since getting it I haven't had a period. Mood, energy all fine. I think it's difficult to know from a forum like this what is for the best and what will suit you. You need to talk to your gynaecologist about your concerns. There must be a good reason why they are recommending it.

givemushypeasachance · 08/03/2024 14:32

It's marmite - people love them or hate them, and you'll probably find more comments from the hate camp because why would you bother replying going eh well it works okay for me, versus the horrible experience you had and want to warn people about.

For what it's worth I'm on my third coil, had one for at least 12 years, love it no side effects I can note and it makes my heavy painful periods disappear completely.

Itsallfunngamesuntil · 08/03/2024 14:35

Hated mine. I always had a v light discharge like the v last remnants of your period

Always felt like there was an odour due to this

Dreadful. Took it out after six months

DinnaeFashYersel · 08/03/2024 14:36

Great for me.

No periods except in the last few months before it was needing changed. Just had a new one in and its also helped reverse some peri insomnia and I am now sleeping much better.

GoodbyeErinsborough · 08/03/2024 14:37

I'm due to have my second one changed.

No periods, no weight gain (caused my the coil... eating, yes)

I've also recently started on hrt patches and don't need to have anything else because of the mirena. I wouldn't go back.

Wannabegreenfingers · 08/03/2024 14:37

Love mine. I'm on my second and wouldn't be without it.

Growlybear83 · 08/03/2024 14:37

I had a Mirena coil for about eight years and didn't have any problems with it. I didn't have a period until it was removed. However, I wasn't aware of the link with breast cancer until I was diagnosed with hormone positive breast cancer about six months after it was removed. my breast surgeon and oncologist said that in their opinion it was one of the contributory factors.

Definitelynotme2022 · 08/03/2024 14:39

I'm on my 4th - they really work well for me.

My first one was to help with pmt and heavy periods, and my periods completely stopped! I now use it as the progesterone part of my HRT.

MrsFinkelstein · 08/03/2024 14:40

I've had my Mirena since 2008 - best thing ever.

I'm a Sexual Health Nurse and IME about 95% of users have no issues with it.

Revengeofthepangolins · 08/03/2024 14:41

Big fan

userpip · 08/03/2024 14:47

Mines been in 7 months and I'm still not sure, when it was first fitted I thought great but after about 3 weeks I bleed lightly/Brown blood constantly for about 3 months then it stop and I'm now having really light periods that last about 13 days... I'm going to give it a year snd if nothing changes then I'm having it out

BarrelOfOtters · 08/03/2024 14:50

I had it put in as I was finding the progesterone bit of HRT difficult to tolerate, bad mood swings etc., also to help control bleeding.

It's been fine, I'm losing weight not gaining. My sister has one too and it's fine for her.

The worse bit for me was the insertion, fortunately I had it done at the clinic at the hospital as I fainted, which can happen, and ended up with them keeping me in for a couple of hours, I was off work the rest of the day and the day after with cramps. And was cursing having had it. But now it's fine.

When I get it taken out it'll have to be at the clinic too, but they are forewarned ....

fancyfrogs · 08/03/2024 14:53

No issues with mine, I like it. Very light spotting sometimes but that's it. Also found insertion absolutely fine and not at all painful, despite spending weeks reading horror stories beforehand and being very worried

TheFormidableMrsC · 08/03/2024 14:53

First one was absolutely fine (I was given one before they were widely available for medical reasons). Second one fine. Third one absolutely hideous and I had it removed. Tried a fourth one for unmanageable peri bleeding but it made it ten times worse. Had that removed. Then I got breast cancer so I can't have one anyway. I got on much better with the copper coil. Having said all of this, I know plenty of people who absolutely love theirs and have no issues whatsoever.

newtb · 08/03/2024 14:54

Bled sludgy blood for best part of a year and go loth to remove on cost grounds. No previous problems with 2 copper coils. Eventually it was removed. Best thing I did.

waterlellon · 08/03/2024 14:55

Look into the jaydess as an alternative. It needs c
Removing sooner but has less hormone in

Same for me. This link should be clearly pointed out to patients. Not just put in a leaflet.

Physiologicalmalfunction · 08/03/2024 14:56

I've had one for two years due to a combination of ridiculously heavy 6 week periods and as half of my HRT.

The fitting isn't comfortable but only lasts a few seconds. Mild achy period type pain for a couple of days. Light intermittent bleeding for a few months.

The upside - I now have light 2 day periods, no PMT or associated aches and pains. It works really well along with Evorel as part of my HRT. Also - I never have to think about contraception - it's sorted for years.

I could say I gained weight but if I'm honest I became more inactive and ate more at about the same time due to wfh. I've almost lost that now though since moving more/eating less junk.

Applecrumble24 · 08/03/2024 15:00

Love mine, have very light or no periods.
I’m on my 4th? 5th? Can’t remember. Had it taken out for ttc then straight back in after. No side effects at all.
Had cramps for a few hours after my first one but nothing with the others.

Hardbackwriter · 08/03/2024 15:01

I love mine. I found fitting really pretty awful (but worth it) before I had had a vaginal bjrth, an absolute breeze afterwards.

Waves to fellow Sexual Health Nurse

I loved my Mirena until it decided it wanted to come out all by itself! Does your Trust like you to try and cram a Levosert in before going for Mirena? I hate the horrible things, stiff and difficult to fit!

DrinkFeckArseBrick · 08/03/2024 15:05

I had one, I think it triggered a major relapse of CFS (headaches and fatigue), however in hindsight I'd always been sensitive to hormonal contraception and so don't think it was necessarily mirena specific. It could also have been coincidence. I also had light periods but a lot of spotting for the rest of the month.

I know people who think it has made them suicidal and others who it stopped their periods completely and they think it's the best thing ever as they don't have to worry about contraception for years at a time and have no side effects. The only way you'll know which camp you're in is to try it

Curioustoknow1 · 08/03/2024 15:13

Awful for me...I had it because my gynaecologist recommended it for heavy bleeding. Admittedly the bleeding did get lighter, however the bleeding didn't stop for the entire 7 months it was in- I bled every single day & couldn't wait to have it removed.
