Mirena coil

Posting for traffic 😳
Could I ask for mirena coil experiences?
I have been suggested one today by the gynae. I have never taken contraception or had coil etc so I’m apprehensive. Mainly due to the increased breast cancer risk. Yes I’m a worrier.

I had one fitted in my 30s for heavy periods but hated it. Caused a weird smell (so I thought) and I just didn't feel right with it. So had it removed after 7 months.

Then I tried it again at 50 as part of HRT. It took 7 months for all break-through bleeding to finally stop. I am due to have it out next January when I'm 55. Its been fine this time around but I think it's been responsible for bloating. Mood has been fine with it too. I'm now having to take extra progesterone tablets as I started getting break-through bleeding about a year ago.

I'd say give it a go OP. You've nothing to lose. But keep in the back of your mind that it can take upto 12 months to reduce bleeding.

RatatouillePie · 09/03/2024 18:48

I had one fitted 2.5 years ago and not had a period since which is great for sports!

I did NOT enjoy having it fitted but have had no issues.

TheArtfulScreamer1 · 09/03/2024 18:51

I'm on my second one really light periods and no issues.

Medee · 09/03/2024 19:06

I’m on my 3rd. Love it, no periods but the fitting has got progressively worse. (3rd fitting also had removal of the 2nd.)

cerisepanther73 · 09/03/2024 19:15

@Dogzombie

I have had two mirer coils over a number of years due to heavy periods i couldn't cope with this, staining of clothes fear ect

Best thing i could have done,

Wish i had done this sooner,

Yes it's was extremely uncomfortable having this inserted in for the sizing of the coil right fit,

I nearly fainted i was shaking for a short while,

You can take pain killers or
have numbing pain relief gel inserted inside you,
beforehand too

Yes i would definitely recommend them mirer coil

Best thing ever! After a lifetime of horrendous, life-limiting periods and pain, this felt like a miracle cure. The next time I saw the GP who gave me this I almost cried with gratitude.
I felt like I finally had a life.
My periods completely stopped and it is now used as the progesterone part of my HRT.
I appreciate that it is not for everyone, but it is certainly worth a shot.
All the Best,
xxx

Great for me after my last pregnancy and heading towards menopause. I’m about halfway through my second. Very light bleeding whereas most people I know my age had some awful flooding heading into perimenopause.

WessexPrincess · 09/03/2024 19:21

I'm on my 2nd one, wish I'd got one sooner, only noticeable side effect is no periods!

Noseyoldcow · 09/03/2024 19:26

After years of suffering horrible heavy periods and using mefenamic acid and transexamic acid tablets, I was advised to have a mirena coil fitted. Periods stopped straight away, then I sailed through menopause. It's out now, because I don't need it any more, but I wish I'd had it fitted way sooner. Didn't realise how life limiting those god awful periods were. I did get breast tenderness and enlargement and spots at first, but then everything does that to me. Those side effects settled down within a month or so. But it doesn't suit everyone.

Iwantmyoldnameback · 09/03/2024 19:28

Brilliant. Wish I'd had it years earlier. No more flooding!

IStandWithACrutch · 09/03/2024 19:31

Resisted it for years, then at the end of my rope with flooding bleeds that went on for 4/5 weeks at a time I reluctantly gave it a shot. I had mine put in under GA as I needed a hysteroscopy too.

It’s been life changing for me. I never got along with progesterone in the minipill (the resulting horrific dips in mood mainly fuelled my reluctance to get a Mirena) but it’s been great. Better still I now whack on an oestrogen patch and that’s my HRT sorted, no need for progesterone tablets, which quite a few of my friends are struggling with as part of their HRT.

Sam0207 · 09/03/2024 19:38

Mine was a lifesaver. I've had heavy, go to bed, take massive amounts of painkillers and feel like I'm in labour periods all my life. In fact labour was a breeze compared to some periods I've had.

Fitted in 1999 after DD2, removed in late 2001 to conceive DS (got pregnant first go after 1 period). Refitted at 6 week check and then only changed as needed (maybe twice) as wasn't relying on it for contraception.

Painful being inserted, ask for numbing gel/take some co-codomol beforehand. I had a crampy, period pain belly for a few days.

First time I has it fitted it took about 3/4 months to settle down, random spotting and light periods. Then - blissfully nothing. Not a smidge, no side effects and no PMT.

In fact, I didn't have a period from Oct 2002 until I asked for it to be removed (I thought it had slipped/could feel it) in 2022. The only reason I didn't have another inserted was because I'm of a certain age and wanted to see what my body was doing re menopause. PMT didn't come back but lighter (manageable) periods did.

I spent many years blessing the inventor, I'm sure I'd have been begging for a hysterectomy after DS if it hadn't been an option.

ScaredAndPanicky · 09/03/2024 19:53

Was horrendous for me.
Offered it as had really heavy periods for a week every 3 weeks.
On the mirena I bled continuously heavily for 9 months until they finally agreed to take it back out as it wasn't going to settle down.
It also made me suicidal for a month when I first went on it, and again every few months for a few days.

longtompot · 09/03/2024 23:13

For me because I had fibroids it got pushed out early one morning. The insertion wasn't too bad, just a bit of an ouch when the GP held my cervix open. I did feel a bit light headed afterwards but I think that was more due to the invasive nature of the procedure. I don't know it would even have helped me with my heavy periods as I have now had a hysterectomy.
My dd, 34, has PCOS and very heavy, painful periods when they happen. She is currently trying Depo Provera injection which isn't a huge success, so also trying a progesterone pill. The next step is a Mirena, which I really thought wasn't an option for someone so young who hasn't had children.

Autienotnaughtie · 09/03/2024 23:24

Awful
Heavy periods, mood swings, anxiety. Had it 9m then got it removed. Never again.

Runningforcheesecake · 09/03/2024 23:43

Dreadful . I bled for seven months, weight gain, migraines that would last for days, acne…. Then I started to have pain. GP refused to remove it. Saw a different GP, begged him to remove it which he did. Turns out it had moved somehow and I had a nasty infection. Was on industrial strength antibiotics. Great for those who it works for but I wasn’t for me.

HouseIsOnFire · 09/03/2024 23:47

Horrendous and I bitterly regret having it - it cost me my late 20s.

Caused back ache, eczema, imsane waeoght gain, depression, anxiety and crazy over sweating to the point I avoided leaving the house.

Worst of all, it caused intense suicidal thoughts to the point I'd be daily working out how to end it all.

It took SEVEN gps/gynaes to get one who'd listen and finally remove it.

The anxiety and intrusive thoughts literally disappeared within 24 hours of having it removed.

When it was removed, I was then housebound thanks to severe menorrhagia until my hormones rebalanced out, and it's taken several years of time and therapy to feel like I am myself again.

If you do decide to try it, please please please keep a journal of your mood and any symptoms- if i had done this I think it would have been easier to get a gynae to remove it.

ALongHardWinter · 09/03/2024 23:54

Mirena seems to be something you either love or hate. I loved it. I had it primarily because I was having extremely heavy, painful periods, when I was 35. Within 6 months of having it,I had no periods at all, which was brilliant. I had 2 more Mirenas over the next 13 years and apart from a little bleeding for a day or 2 after having ot put in,I continued having no periods.

Emmelina · 09/03/2024 23:59

I switched to Mirena from copper on GP advice when my periods started getting very heavy (peri kicking in from my late 30's), wish I'd done it much sooner. Periods have completely stopped and PMT and skin massively improved. No downsides for me at all.

LorlieS · 10/03/2024 00:14

Not for me whatsoever! But done with babies so DH simply had a vasectomy 😀

SeaMills · 10/03/2024 09:28

I switched to it from the depo on encouragement from my sister. It was uncomfortable to put in and gave me terrible cramps.

My DH also complained that it was uncomfortable. It must have been quite bad because it got to the point where he wouldn’t have sex.

I had it removed after four months.

Splat92 · 10/03/2024 09:33

I had mine for 5 years. It stopped periods completely which I loved but I was having trouble with weight gain so ended up getting it removed. After I had it removed it completely solved the brain fog issues I'd been having. Up until that point I had not attributed the brain fog to the Mirena, but it completely disappeared overnight once I had it removed.

Sorry, did the people who had the flooding not use the mirena coil?

I'm considering one myself, despite my earlier decision of never wanting hormonal birth control again.

MiltonNorthern · 10/03/2024 10:11

Love my mirena. Went from 3 week periods to none at all within 6 months. Amazing. No side effects other than no periods and no PMT.

Rainbowshit · 10/03/2024 10:13

Bloody love mine. Can't believe I spent so many years having unnecessary periods because I listened to the scare stories.
