Cash strapped council buys Mr Darcys shirt

allmycats · 08/03/2024 09:39

How can Calderdale Council justify spending £20,000 plus buying fees on a shirt when they are already in dire financial
state. ? Who the hell authorised this spend when they are making so many cuts. I do understand that various departments have separate budgets but common sense should apply. Oh stop, common sense and council spending don’t come in the same sentence.

Well obviously because it might be better to spend it on something less ephemeral/more educational/supporting a different tourism perspective

Read @Beamur 's post which is absolutely spot on and explains things beautifully. Opened my eyes more and I live here.

It clearly says it was bought by a museum using money donated to the museum to buy things!

“Ephemeral”?

The Mr-Darcey-in-the-fountain scene is one of the most iconic TV moments of the last 50 years. Andrew Davies at a stroke moved period dramas from something fussy and old-hat to novel and sexy and it has spawned a thousand imitations and parodies. It comes up in the top ten TV moments every time C5 does one of those “Top 100” shows. It is categorically not ephemeral, and maybe read up on TV history before declaring it so.

And from a tourism perspective, have you visited Castle Howard recently? They’re still dining out now on Brideshead Revisited, which aired in 1981. Popular period dramas last in the British consciousness a lot longer than I think you’ve realised.

Oh dear, high horse time, typical mumsnet responses.

It looks like a nice museum, it’s a pretty area. At the end of the day it’s a shirt and a lotta dosh for a shirt. That’s why anyone is discussing it in the first place ring fence or no ring fence it’s why it’s a topic.

Can we stop being so ott on Mumsnet? Will pigs fly?

Ah yes, sorry. There are a confusing amount of replies, and replies to replies here. So you can see Beamur's point. Although I agree that 'Heartbeat Country' is a bit of a stretch now.

I'd say a very savvy move actually.
It's money that can't be spent on other services.
Calderdale has a good reputation for being an excellent location for film and TV. Shibden Hall is a short distance from the Bankfield Museum (Gentleman Jack) and the BM has a lot of specialist textile exhibitions.
This item would be just another exhibit in a big London museum but is a smart and thoughtful addition to this one. It married up the textile tradition of this museum with a modern trend of film and media in the valley.

I think you’re right. The nearness to Haworth is also key. Would it bring visitors all the way from London on its own? Only a few Darcy fanatics. Will it tempt coach tours of exactly the right demographic that are already in the area to make a 10 mile detour to the museum? Yes, in droves.
It’s not often a museum has a chance to acquire a single object that will on its own draw large numbers in.

ScholesPanda · 08/03/2024 12:24

YABU. I might make a special visit to Halifax now, just to see this museum.

Thanks for the free advert OP.

So your tactic is make a controversial point, receive an argument back, then decide you don’t have an actual point of rebuttal so resort to personal attacks. Got it.

Maybe if you don’t want to engage in debate, don’t join threads in AIBU?

Polite discussion is all that needs to be present on this forum and just so often isn’t.

Createausername1970 · 08/03/2024 12:42

Pride and Prejudice has always been one of my favourite books and I do read it again from time to time. I do admit though, when I get the bit about Elizabeth visiting Pemberley I do have to imagine the wet shirt scene 😮 as it sadly doesn't appear in the book 😁

And if I was in the area I would go and pay homage to the shirt.

PicaK · 08/03/2024 13:14

Oh I'm so pleased it's gone somewhere that I can visit and see it. Obviously designated funds are ring fenced. I'll be bringing tourist ££s so it's win win

Errr my answer is very like many others and you didn’t feel like making this remark on any others. My understanding of the thread is perfect, my answer is sensible. Your comment is rude and wrong

So how come you missed that the shirt was paid for by donations to the museum, and not by the council taxpayer?

There is no indication whatsoever that that is the case.

People will absolutely come and see it.

I’m from a Northern town and I hate the attitude that only places like the V&A should have things like this. We’ll never level-up if everything ends up in London. There are loads of lovely little museums in the North and they are often underestimated (Bury Art Gallery has an amazing Turner painting just sitting there in its collection with no fanfare at all - I bloody love that).

London museums are out of reach to many of us in the north because if the expense of travel and possible need to stay overnight. It would be cheaper for a Londoner to visit the Royal Armouries than for a Leeds person to visit the V&A. It absolutely is not the case that this going to the V&A would make this available to the nation

Let me spell out what I mean - there’s no indication whatsoever that I was unaware of that fact.

Please no more picky missing the point comments. Please remember that you can have a view and so can I. I may chose to express a different view but that doesn’t mean I haven’t read the thread. It means I don’t share some majority view on here.

Chocolatebuttonns · 08/03/2024 14:02

Aw bankfield museum is sweet.

Tbh nobody thought people would visit shiben Hall either but they did....

Halifax is really trying hard to be a place to visit isn't it. Loads of stuff being filmed there recently too.

The council themselves are a bag of shit mostly. The devil works hard but whoever is in charge or tourism at calderdale Council works harder.

Justme68 · 08/03/2024 14:10

I live in calderdale too no way will I be going to have a look.

If you find yourself in Halifax, give me a shout and I'll buy you a bun in the Piece Hall and we can go and see what all the fuss is about.
