Fed up with the current state we are in

SanctusInDistress · 08/03/2024 08:57

Am I right to be upset over the current state of things and that the future looks bleak?

nhs- don’t get me started

jobs - where on earth are jobs? Barely anything there and when there are they are looking for somebody who has done that exact job in an equal organisation.

bills - spiralling

food - at this rate we will be either back to the middle ages foraging for postage, or eating cheap nasty ultra processed stuff all of the time.

working conditions - there are two camps; the quiet quitters with chúpatz to get away with it, and the workhorses being worked to death.

brexit - I’ve yet to hear of a tangible benefit (apart from blue passports).

politics - everybody has run out of ideas. They don’t know what else to come up with.

poverty in work - spiralling

house prices (in SE where I live) - where are people finding the money to pay these prices?????

going out - impossible. Theatre tickets, cinema, meals out. It’s just become too expensive except for rare rare treats.

everything is at a standstill, waiting for this election so that something can happen again (or not) to jolt the economy for ordinary folks like us back into action.

am I just being unreasonable with being fed up?

We'd all be far better off if the nation hadn't closed for covid. The death rate would have been very similar. Every time I ventured that on MNet and suggested the cost of Furlough would bankrupt us and the result would be closed restaurants, and other service providers, fewer jobs, higher interest rates, etc., I was shouted down with utter vitriol.

How did all those on this thread think it would be paid for without consequences?

We shut down for the NHS, the NHS did not open up again for us.

Brexit has had a lot to do with closed restaurants etc.
Liz Truss and her disastrous budget had a lot to do with interest rates.

Just leave this here. Someone hasn't any time for your whinging.

anybody can type a headline.

The question is, can anybody spell out a tangible benefit of Brexit? I.e. can anybody please say something that they have personally benefited from
as a result of Brexit? (Apart from blue passports).

Can't you read ? Kemi has pointed out that Brexit has bought in hundreds of billions .That is a lot of money to not be able to see. So either she is lying or deluded, or people on this thread are just whinging when they should be celebrating.

I tend to agree there needs to be jail time for people who talk Brexit down

People talk about leaving this country as its sunk so low but where would you go?

Countries in Southern Europe are on brink of major drought and water crises for example. The grass always seems greener

Um, pissing rain in Portugal today and all the reservoirs are full. The grass is very green!

I agree with you on everything except food. If you think food is expensive then you just don't know how to cook. Honestly food is SO cheap in this country. There is ALWAYS a deal on something. Have you visited a farmers market for fruit and veg. I have family who visit here from my home country and the one thing they can't get over is how cheap food is here, I agree with that.

Everything else, I agree with you. We are in the top 5% earners and we find everything expensive too. And before people harp on about how they cannot understand it, where or how do they think the more expensive areas are filled up with? Off course people have to live there.

You can tell you're in the top 5% of earners. "Have you visited a farmers market?" Er no. I work full time and don't have access to transport to get to the farmers market.
Food is not cheap!

underthebun · 08/03/2024 11:47

We are in decline unfortunately & due to the changing population dynamics it won’t be improving anytime soon & likely to get worse. There has been no investment in anything except house prices.

malificent7 · 08/03/2024 11:49

Op....why aren't you increadsng your hours, taking on 3 extra jobs, retraining to be better paid, starting your own lucrative business, stopping eating avocafos on toadt or drinking coffee out, moving up north to Toxteth where houses are cheaper, stopping at one child...or having no children at all???

Only joking...of course yanbu. I was just mimicking the advice of the "im all right jack" brigade.

Vest wants to know who you voted for so she can tell you it’s all your fault if you voted conservative.

People have very short memories but we didn’t have a pot to piss in when Labour got the boot.

The conservatives have decreased the deficit by 80% but you left wing nutters keep on bleating about services.

The pain has been necessary. We were running out of other peoples money

Is that the best you can do seriously? You right wing nutter....

malificent7 · 08/03/2024 11:49

Also, if by 'farmers market' you actually meant 'ordinary street market with a bowl of carrots or peppers for a pound' then yes, sure (as long as you can get to and from it, know how to cook well with veg, can afford the gas/electric etc).
But if you meant somewhere like my local farmers market, then, much as I wish small ethical organic growers and producers well, that is NOT cheap.

underthebun · 08/03/2024 11:51

Thing we’re not rosy before covid. Why have wages stagnated?

underthebun · 08/03/2024 11:53

No gov is going to stop immigration as the country needs them. People don’t get this though & vote for Brexit which hasn’t done anything to immigration.

So not true. Tory gaslighting at its finest

stargirl1701 · 08/03/2024 11:57

It felt like this in run up to the 1997 election.

VestibuleVirgin · 08/03/2024 12:03

@HungryBeagle No. But you can have a fruit pastil!

Gettingonmygoat · 08/03/2024 12:06

No matter which colour gets in at the next GE we need to pull up the drawbridge and concentrate on our population. Immigration needs to be at a very low number for the next decade as does foreign aid. We need to stop our country sinking before we let anymore onboard.

My thoughts exactly. My eyes nearly got stuck at the back of my head they rolled so much when I read that

There would have been no gdp growth without immigration...

BrieAndChilli · 08/03/2024 12:14

we found a payslip the other day of DHs when our eldest was a baby - he is 17 now. DH was earning £800 a month (net) and I would have been either on maternity or working part time earning £400 a month. We did ok back then. Weren't living a life of luxury but had a decent life but we now bring home over 4 times that month and i dont feel any better off (we do now have 3 teenagers mind!!)

Tel12 · 08/03/2024 12:16

If you want to get some of handle on what's going on have a look on YouTube for Gary on Economics. He's a former city trader who has made millions but developed a conscience and talks about wealth inequality. He seems to understand economics and he's of the same opinion, it's only going to get worse. Ordinary people need to get a grip, if there's any chance of improving things.

underthebun · 08/03/2024 12:17

@TheSnootiestFox we need the workers. Hence why with Brexit immigration is now coming from more non EU countries. We have shortages in care & the NHS & the NHS would not exist without immigration. An older population means more doctors & nurses.

underthebun · 08/03/2024 12:19

Wages are shit in this country & have little growth since 2008!! Whereas asset prices have inflated in part due to QE. This does not make for a functioning society

Blubbled · 08/03/2024 12:21

I was considering moving back to England but this thread has made me wonder if it'd be such a good idea!
Things are bad for us here in Ireland too, for many of the same reasons, but I now wonder would I be better off staying here? I have to travel all over the place for medical appointments, it takes up the whole day and costs me a bomb in petrol and parking. I'd love to be able to give up the car and live somewhere where I could manage with public transport and the odd taxi but there's no chance when living rurally and having so many different health problems. Food, and EVERYTHING else, has always been much dearer here since we joined the Euro. I think ye are lucky that ye kept your won currency, the Euro is like Monopoly money! It buys next to nothing!
TBH, I think most Western countries aren't doing as well as they used to nowadays. Our countries still haven't fully recovered from the 2008 global economic crash and the lockdowns did even further economic damage. Mass uncontrolled immigration, especially of the undocumented migrants who get free accommodation, healthcare and spending money whilst so many of the indigenous are struggling is not helping either.
Our finite resources have been stretched too far for too long, no wonder there is now not enough to go round for ordinary people. And yet, the rich keep getting richer. Something's gone badly wrong but I don't think it's exclusive to the UK!

TheSandHurtsMyFeelings · 08/03/2024 12:24

Have you visited a farmer's market?

Let the ignorant poors eat artisan sourdough and artichokes, eh?

OP, you're not wrong. This country has been asset-stripped by 14 years of venal corruption and self-interest. I can only hope that things improve for my ds and his generation.
