Missed credit card payment advise needed please

Basically I purchased an item on my card and paid it in full. A tiny bit of interest was added £1.15 and I’ve had a letter today saying I’ve missed the payment. Letter didn’t arrive until 4 weeks after said missed payment and it will show as a default. I’m in a right state as we are about to get a mortgage and I’ve ruined us for £1. Tesco are showing no care and I’m guessing it will go on my credit report. Is there anything I can say to them to avoid the default please help! I wish I knew before the 14 days as I wouldn’t have got the default

Have you phoned them?
MBNA are really helpful. Barclaycard not so much.
Edited sorry just noticed you said Tesco.

Musntapplecrumble · 07/03/2024 21:52

Yes def ring them, I've found Tesco helpful 🙂

Pumpkinpie1 · 07/03/2024 21:57

Phone them

LIZS · 07/03/2024 21:57

If interest was added did you miss the payment deadline? Just clear it now.

gtx1797h · 08/03/2024 07:42

@LIZS Yes I cleared it all as soon as I realised but it was outside of the statement date
@Musntapplecrumble even though it’s gone passed the payment date do you reckon they will be helpful ? I hope so

A missed payment and a default are two different things.

It would be very unusual for their collections process to have moved that quickly, so as to result in a default after only a few weeks.

yourlobster · 08/03/2024 08:13

I'd be very surprised if they registered a default so quickly but it is a missed payment unfortunately.

You could ask them to remove that but they don't need to. How much will one missed/late payment impact a mortgage application?

In future, have a DD set up even if you pay everything in full.

gtx1797h · 08/03/2024 09:24

Do you think they will remove the missed payment notice, this is what i am worried about
please give me some hope! @yourlobster

I honestly don't know, I've never dealt with Tesco. You'd hope they would for such a small amount.

This should be illegal. We have several means of instant communication these days. Online banking, push notifications, text messages and phone calls.

gtx1797h · 08/03/2024 10:38

Thanks will try this route @ancienticecream i can’t function knowing what issues I’ve caused!

OP posts:
SomethingDifferentt · 08/03/2024 10:39

Unless there was some error on their part, causing the late payment, it's highly unlikely they'll remove it.

Banks are obligated to report accurate information to credit reference agencies about how credit accounts are repaid - they don't just wipe the slate clean for no reason.

gtx1797h · 08/03/2024 11:48

will update on what they say - if they can adjust it will let you all know

OP posts:
Mrsttcno1 · 08/03/2024 11:54

They won’t be able to wipe or remove the missed payment if it is actually a genuine missed payment.

They are tightly regulated and have to provide accurate information.

defaulttodippy · 08/03/2024 12:10

Whilst Tesco credit would disclose a missed payment and that may slightly impact your credit score, I think I remember 6 missed payments being the critical line for further credit issues...mortgages being one.

DancefloorAcrobatics · 08/03/2024 12:19

My question is, when did you pay in full?
Did you check the balance before you made the initial payment? Do you have proof of this?

Because we had issues with Tesco credit card many years ago. We actually paid the balance via phone call and still, they added interest to our statement.

Explanation was that apparently the balance was last calculated on X date and we paid on Y date incurring interest between X and Y date.
They did waiver the intrest in the end as we had proof of phone call ect. Needles to say, credit card was cancelled!

gtx1797h · 08/03/2024 12:19

@Mrsttcno1 its not a genius missed payment though as I wasn’t aware
I would have paid it within the 14 days had they sent me a letter :(
bad times

Legally it is a genuine missed payment if you did not make a payment during the billing cycle, usually that’s 30 days.

Are you not able to check your account online/by app etc? They don’t have to send you a letter within a certain timescale I don’t believe as when you sign up for the cards usually part of the t’s and c’s you agree to includes you agreeing to keep on top of payments etc

But it's not Tesco's job to chase you - that will be their argument.

Don't you get a monthly statement?

tothelefttotheleft · 08/03/2024 12:33

I thought I hadn't received a bill and therefore was late paying. I rang Tesco and they let me pay it late with no charges as I'd always paid promptly before.

I then found the bill......

gtx1797h · 08/03/2024 12:37

Was it after the statement date did it go as missed payment @tothelefttotheleft I needed to see That thank you for the positivity

I believe there are ways of adding explanatory comments to credit records. I don’t know whether it’s applicable in this case.

allthemiddlechildrenoftheworld · 08/03/2024 14:39
