World Book Day panic

Please help!
12 year old boy at secondary school.
School announced on Monday that they want kids to dress up as book characters for World Book Day.
I thought WBD was on Friday so I was planning to sort this out tomorrow, as I have the day off work.
To my horror, I've literally just found out they have to go in dressed up tomorrow!!! DS's school are doing WBD tomorrow!!!
Help!
What on earth can I dress DS as?
To make it more complicated, he now wants a 'cool' look, understated, low key, as he says he'd get laughed out of secondary school if he went in dressed as Harry Potter.
It's 8pm, I'm tired, and I'm really panicking!

@EnglishHamlet "generic teenage boy" would be any book that is contemporary set and the main character is a teenage boy.
So Alex Rider, Percy Jackson, Greg Heffley, Tom Gates (ok he's only 10) the kids from Cherub (when in their civvies) etc.

Smartiepants79 · 06/03/2024 20:32

Heart stopper
Percy Jackson
Any number of David walliams/Ronald Dahl/
Adrian Mole
Phillip Pullman

InternationalWoman0fMystery · 06/03/2024 20:32

Not character ideas but conceptual book titles to save the embarrassment of dressing up? Eg a red cut out A on a lapel (The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne), ice-cream scoop in top pocket (Scoop by Evelyn Waugh), carrying a photo of a woman (Portrait of Lady by Henry James) or if you have happen to have a v large screw + washer / nut lying around that will be visible from a top pocket (Turn of the Screw) …

Yep, me too.
It's the whole school too! Years 7 to 11!
Message from Head to say "All pupils are expected to dress up as their favourite book character'!

Eek I’d have been fuming to receive that email. DS can’t just leave you to think of something, it’s meant to be a book character that he likes. If he didn’t give me a clue he would be going as himself!!

menopausalmare · 06/03/2024 20:33

Hikers!😬

Smartiepants79 · 06/03/2024 20:33

Holes
Could get away with The hunger games or Divergent at a push.
Any sports kits? He could do one that’s got a biography.

whatkatydid2014 · 06/03/2024 20:34

Johnny Maxwell from only you can save mankind, Johnny and the bomb etc is another normal clothes one

Lulu1919 · 06/03/2024 20:34

"So I don't actually know any book characters that he could say he is, whilst dressed in normal clothes!"

A muggle

I was thinking the same - was hoping this was the last year I would have to worry about it!

My DS is in Year 8 and his school aren’t doing anything for it. We’re both so glad!

toastedcrumpetsrock · 06/03/2024 20:37

Wear all black and go as 'Jack' from Shadow Jumper - google for brief summary so he knows who he is!

HollyGolightly4 · 06/03/2024 20:39

I organise WBD and I withstand fierce pressure from staff who want to dress up/get the kids to dress up. Absolutely not on my watch!

Diary of a wimpy kid is a good one.

Or go for black jeans and a red/white t-shirt - black, white and read all over to be a newspaper!

hangingonfordearlife1 · 06/03/2024 20:39

in secondary??? jesus just send him in jeans and a hoody

HarrietSchulenberg · 06/03/2024 20:40

I trot this out every time someone mentions World Book Day but one of my kids once just took an empty washing powder box and said he was Martin Launderette from the Mr Gum books. He much preferred that to the time (in Reception) that I covered him in blue facepaint and bandages and sent him in as Mr Bump.

AdaColeman · 06/03/2024 20:41

If you don't have an orange tee shirt for Percy Jackson, go as Arthur Dent from The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. All you need is a dressing gown and a hand towel to drape around your neck.

Extra points of course for taking Pan Galactic Gargleblaster lurid cocktails for the whole class! 🍹 🍹 🍹 🍹

Actually @EnglishHamlet you sound as though you could use a Pan Galactic Gargleblaster or two yourself! Open the blast doors! 🍹 🍹

Would he rock a dress ?
The boy in the dress ???

He'd never in a million years go to school in a dress!! At his school, he'd probably get picked on till year 11 for going to school dressed like that.....

Rosestulips · 06/03/2024 20:43

His normal clothes and say he’s Harry Potter in book 7

Oceancreature · 06/03/2024 20:44

Jeans and t shirt and say he is a character from Diary of a Wimpy Kid eg Roderick

PTAProblems · 06/03/2024 20:47

@Oceancreature I came on to suggest the same :)

Wellhellooooodear · 06/03/2024 20:48

Football kit. My year 7 son would not be seen dead dressing up for WBD, are you sure it's compulsory?

hottchocolate · 06/03/2024 20:50

No idea but World Book Day is tomorrow. I have been caught out before and therefore look it up and put it in the diary in advance this year. I'd recommend it if your DS is likely to need to dress up again next year. I don't mean that as arsey as it sounds!

b0zza1 · 06/03/2024 20:50

Do you have a printer? You could print out one of these masks?
Mega Robo Bros or Bunny Vs Monkey

If not for tomorrow then you could think about these books for your son anyway? As they are comics they might be more stimlutaing for him is he has ADHD?

The guy from Percy Jackson - I'm blanking his name but my son went as him in normal clothes and cut out wings on his high top converse
