To ask if you go to the gym during work hours, HOW?

How do you fit it around work hours? I use my "lunch hour" to pick up the kids and it's making me sad I can't fit an hour at the gym in whereas I know people do manage to do this!

There’s a place ten minutes away from my office that does 45 minute pilates classes at lunchtime. It’s not the kind of thing that gets you so sweaty you have to shower, but it’s great exercise and good for your mental wellbeing. On the days when I go I either eat at my desk afterwards or have a protein shake for lunch.

I can't do it. Even though work has some flexibility, I wouldn't relax or enjoy it.

In a previous workplace there was a gym over the road so that worked for some people. In another I had a colleague who had agreed an early start & late finish in return for a 2 hour lunchbreak - it suited the manager because it gave cover at both ends of the day, the rest of us were happy cos we could have flexibility over start/end times.

I just try to do 20 minutes walks before work and during lunch

It’s nothing to do with being a CF or taking the piss it’s about having a flexible job (if you are lucky enough to manage your own time)

Our management encourages people taking time out to exercise, especially since wfh as some people are less active

Personally I have a PT session every Tuesday so away from my desk for about 90 mins to 2 hours but I will have started early that day

On non PT days I will go late afternoon and again be away for about 90 minutes but that gives me a burst of energy to work later to balance it out

When in the office there is an on-site gym but I am so rarely in the office these days I never use it. But pre covid it wasn’t unusual for it to be packed throughout the day

I don’t think a global company is employing thousands of CF’s so it must be the flexibility

I train on my lunch.
DS goes to after school club (and breakfast club) so I don't have to pick him up from school at 3:15 and can continue to work until I'm done, or he needs to be picked up to go to a hobby

My kids are older. I’m a teacher so nip off as soon as school finished, gym then do some work at home in the evenings.

When my kids were little and my husband away I didn’t gym, I used weights and DVDs at home. Is that an option? It would be less stressful than rushing around.

Yes certainly an option for days I work wfh. I need to get active or I'm going to end up with a saggy ass from sitting looking into my laptop 5 days a week/8 hours a day.

I’ll nip out for a run at lunchtime. My work is very flexible and one would notice or care if i take longer than my lunch hour

NotFastButFurious · 05/03/2024 22:10

Days I exercise at lunchtime I’d be in the office at 8am and leave at 5pm so I could have up to 90minutes for lunch and still do my contracted hours. In reality I’m not out exercising for 90min, it’s usually more like
60-70min away from my desk.

JustMarriedBecca · 05/03/2024 22:16

My club has a hot desking hub space for people to work from. It's great. I drive there at lunch, do a workout or swim and then stay at the hub space until pick up so I save 20 minutes of travel time.
Otherwise I start work an hour earlier, take shorter lunches on other days. It's all flexible because I'm a grown up.

mitogoshi · 05/03/2024 22:25

I go after work but I'm not full time. My dd goes in work time but shes armed forces and it's allowed!

TattedBarley · 05/03/2024 22:27

Would it be possible for you to work out from home after the kids go to bed? I’ve recently started doing this since I can’t get to a gym. I feel much better for it, and have the comfort of using my own shower afterwards! I’m doing youtube’s growithjo ‘s walking workouts atm and they’re fantastic, really gets my heart rate going

leopardski · 05/03/2024 22:38

We have Flex Time/ flex hours at work. Perfectly fine to take a 90 min lunch if you work the extra 30 mins at the start or end of the day. Along with WFH and my gym being 5 mins away it’s a game changer!
You can flex your hours across the entire week too. Only core hours are 10-3.

I eat breakfast at my desk, eat lunch at my desk (browsing mumsnet) do life admin during work and have about 8 hot drinks a day!
~wonders if @Itsanothermanicmonday is one of my colleagues~
I don't go home early though. And I certainly don't log on at home 😂

Sounds ideal!

On my wfh days my time is my own. If I have no meetings I'll do an exercise class after school drop so might not start til 10:30. It's fine. Today I worked roughly 11:00-13:30 and 14:30-19:00. Many other days I finish at 15:00 to collect kids. Traveling days I can be out of the house 15 hours. It all requires careful calendar planning but none of it is about counting hours - I see fitting 2-3 exercise sessions into the week as a key target. Sometimes it's at 6am, sometimes 11am.

LivingColour · 05/03/2024 22:49

I go on my lunch break on my office days T/W/T - but it’s a strict 30 mins session… not ideal but it does help focus the mind on a session. Lots of supersets, and little recovery. It’s not ideal, but it’s the best I can do.

M & F I tend to go for a run before work as WFH.

maddening · 05/03/2024 23:20

Get exercise equipment at home and work out before work.

maddening · 05/03/2024 23:22

Ps this is what we did - we have a cross trainer, bike, step, weights and kettle bells - plus you tube classes you can create a good varied routine and do this before work.
