Turning in a private road

RoadyMcRoadUser · 04/03/2024 08:57

Preparing to get flamed for this…..There is a large private road literally next door to my kids primary school which is situated in a cul de sac. The public road gets massively congested in this cul de sac as you can imagine. I have sometimes had no choice but to turn my car in the private road. I have never parked there and doing the school run twice a day have never seen anyone else parked up there either. There’s a guy who lives in the road who will literally stand and glare at me if I turn the car round in his road on the school run. It’s like he comes out of his house specifically at school run times to observe this.
I know you aren’t “supposed” to put an inch of the nose of your car in a private road. But equally, there’s a part of me that thinks if you are that enraged by your private road being used by anyone other than the people that live there, then why would you buy a house directly next door to a school in a cul de sac with no other turning options? Am I being an arsehole? Or is this man overly precious?

Same situation - public road goes past the school but there is a private road opposite. I don't park there but I do use it to turn round, and no doubt others do too. There's nowhere elseto turn. Mo

Private road means exactly that, its owned by the people that live in the cul de sac. That also means They have to repair and maintain it. If you and other entitled individuals that use for 'just turning round' ate going to contribute to re surfacing and repairing pot holes etc then carry on. The minute cost is involved you lot will disappear up your own backsides. Iam with the grumpy guy on those one

When we bought our home we had the chance of the same house but with much bigger gardens at the same price. It looked out onto fields and ticked all the boxes.

We took the house with the much smaller back garden. The first house looked out onto school playing fields and then farmers fields. The road and driveways get blocked every single morning. My partner warned me about this when i was getting excited about the size of the garden and views. Not a chance in hell i would want to put up with entitled school run parents in their cars.

I asked the question earlier. Why did the OP have no choice but to use the private road? I have heard most of the excuses and i would be very surprised if its any different to the other entitled, lazy, time starved parents who just cant be arsed to walk/get up early or just dont give a hoot.

Onceuponabumble · 06/03/2024 14:55

I'm going to go against the grain here. I live on a private road shared by 5 houses and my previous house was also. It honestly has never occurred to me to think other people aren't allowed to drive on it. Yes, parking would be rather annoying but just turning around, especially as it's next to a school is to be expected. I think he needs to find more important things to worry about. Surely if you move next to a school you know it's going to bedlam at drop off and pick up!

RainbowNinja77 · 06/03/2024 17:55

You won’t be the only one and he has to pay for the upkeep. The people who are doing this aren’t paying him does tax for it, so YABU and he is rightfully annoyed at the expense you are all costing him.

Harperhan · 06/03/2024 18:04

If you knew how much tarmac cost you would understand why he is standing and glaring. We are currently patching the bottom of our drive where people use it as a turning point and it is costing ÂŁ10,000.

It sounds like you don't know how private roads work. As it's not been adopted by the council, residents pay for its upkeep.

So although you are not turning on the driveway directly by his house, you are effectively doing the same thing by turning in the road that he owns.

Multiply that by however many other parents do the same, multiply it by the number of school days in a year, which will in turn increase road maintenance costs.

I'm not surprised he's cross.

The parents that park in the road which is near the school have got worse over the years since I bought a few years ago. There’s a row of privately owned garages opposite my house too. Most parents are ok but some of them and their kids are just so rude and have no respect. The street is now turned into restricted parking and you need a permit to park there.

So yes YABU OP.

If I need to turn around I purposely look for driveways with 'no turning' signs. I sometimes stop and turn around in driveways with these pathetic signs even if I didn't need to turn around.

It amuses me imagining the anger and outrage.

We viewed a property on a private road. Not only were there annual fees to maintain the road, but the residents weren't permitted to park on the road either or their visitors. We parked on the road for the viewing and were asked by the Estate Agent to move our car onto the driveway. So rules are strict even for residents and visitors. YANVU 🙄

Teddleshon · 07/03/2024 08:22

We are the last house on a no through (public) lane. We had such a terrible problem with endless delivery vans and other vehicles driving right into our stable yard to turn around that we had to spend ÂŁÂŁÂŁ on electric gates.

It caused terrible problems as our dogs are often loose in the yard and the larger vehicles destroyed our edges. Once we had a neighbour's oil tank delivery lorry squeeze right past a pony being shod so they could turn. I always try and respect people's boundaries.

Hippyhippybake · 07/03/2024 08:25

@Hardlyworking Have you ever noticed how much damage turning vehicles can cause to people's entrances? It's soul destroying to have your carefully tended bulbs etc destroyed by thoughtless people.

Wizardry24 · 07/03/2024 08:42

Totally unreasonable!!!!!!!! I am on the receiving end of this attitude and behaviour so completely understand 'the man's' justified actions.
My tiny little gate house does not have a pavement so the paving stones meet the tarmac of the road. Road users feel they have a right to drive over the stones, into my garden to allow oncoming cars to pass (gate pillars allow only one car to pass). Over time this has resulted sunken stones, and I am constantly cleaning muddy tire marks. So, the man is not being precious because you will not be the one forking out for repairs. Enough said.

LoubyLou12345 · 07/03/2024 08:46

Nope you’re totally out of order- see it as his private driveway. He has to pay for repairs and upkeep. So stop using it - totally unfair. He bought the house but he probably didn’t want to have a private road but often people get stuck with it and want the house. So stop taking the piss !

vivainsomnia · 07/03/2024 08:49

I experienced the same when my kids were at nursery. Right next to it was a large driveway leading to flats quite far behind the entrance. Yet a guy would stand there every morning from 7:30 to make sure people didn't park there for 5 minutes or turned around abusing parents who did.

It didn't impact on residents at all, didn't block the passage but he seemed to get a kick at making parents already stressed trying to get to work on time even more stressed. Some people are just like that, plenty of time and energy to enjoy making the life of those who don't difficult.

MarieChantal1 · 07/03/2024 08:52

The problem with school run drivers are they're like bloody sheep. You do it then everyone else copies. Would you be happy with all these drivers using your drive?

But park bloody further from school. Clearly where you're parking isn't suitable.
I can't believe there isn't somewhere further away to park. It sounds like you're all making this cul de sac unsafe for all the school children. If you're all anything like the ones who drive directly outside my DCs school, there'll be parking over drives, driving off quickly without checking mirrors, road rage and revving. Beeping and swearing, mounting kerbs without checking for children. Their lives are farrrrr too important to care about the safety of others. Then DC get run over.

I've been the Mum that had to drive DC to a different village school too. It was rammed with cars directly outside. I parked further away and walked in with my DC. It teaches them not to be so inconsiderate.

Edited

It's like that at the school near me. At drop off and pick up times it's a nightmare to try get anywhere. The road outside the school goes down to 1 lane with traffic from 1 side having priority. The parents park right on the giveway markings so you can't even see what's coming along the road. Then at the other side, the park with their front/back wheels just mm's off the zigzags and continue right to the crossing island, so no vehicles can get by them. It's also a major bus route too which then holds up the bus. Not to mention the way they abandon their cars (can't even say they are parked due to how they've left their cars) with 1 end sticking out into the road, over driveways and other junctions. Then to make it worse, they've added a lollipop person to the mix and she causes more problems because of where she is in the middle of the 1 way stretch of road. You can't see around the traffic and parked cars to see if they way through is clear or not. So it ends up being like a Mexican stand off with the cars that have the priority trying to get through but can't because cars from the other side have tried to get through and got stopped by the lollipop lady. Without all the extra traffic and parked cars, you can easily see if it's clear or not but It's got that bad that the police get called most days because the traffic is at a standstill and nobody can move. Some of them are parked up from 2pm so they can get parked as close to the school as possible.

Could a fire engine get up there if 3 or 4 patents parked at the same time? Or an ambulance? Who decided you weren't a nuisance and the resident was?

This is what a lot of the patents don't get... singularly, its not a problem. Collectively, they are.

aperolspritzbasicbitch · 07/03/2024 14:32

To be fair to him, we have people often cutting across our driveway on foot, and that pisses me off no end.
Mainly because it sets off my ring camera notifications, but also it's very entitled to think you can just take a stroll on someone's property to save a few seconds on your journey.
I could save a few minutes when dropping off my children by walking in their front door, through their kitchen and out the back door, but I don't.
There really is nothing as ignorant as some parents that drive the school run.

Boredandbitter · 07/03/2024 17:21

I think you should opark your car away from the private road where you contribute nothing to its upkeep and walk your lazy arse to the school gates.

Dacadactyl · 07/03/2024 17:25

Just give him a wave and drive off.

He needs a new hobby.

Frances0911 · 07/03/2024 17:41

A private road usually has to be maintained collectively by the people who live on it, possibly by means of a setvice charge.

So every time you drive your car on their road, you are adding to the wear and tear of the tarmac, of which they will be paying for themselves when the road needs to be resurfaced or pot holes filled in.

Daisyblue77 · 07/03/2024 18:01

You are being entitled and unreasonable. Park somewhere else and walk

Dibbydoos · 07/03/2024 18:45

Don't you get it? Private roads are maintained by the owner. You are OOO @RoadyMcRoadUser .

I live on a private road. We have no street lights, no kerbside bin collection no reduction in council tax and you people want to use our road. Do one!

fetchacloth · 07/03/2024 19:06

I can imagine that it's incredibly frustrating living near a school, but as other posters have said, if it bothers one so much, why leave near a school?
I definitely wouldn't for this reason.
