I’ve broken not one heel but both of them. AIBU in not knowing what to do with myself?

I’ve never broken a bone before and here I am with two moon boots on and a creative style of pulling myself up the hall ninja style on my bottom to go to the bathroom.

that’s all I have accomplished today. I’m on my own due to people’s work commitment's although I will have people popping in to make tea and check I’m still sitting where I should be.

i can’t move unless it’s crawling on the floor which isn’t very helpful in the grand scheme of things is it?

I had a very minor fall up then down the stairs, no dramatic story to add other than now, I can’t stand up.
any suggestions on some ways to get around, stop myself Dying of boredom? Always thought I’d like the idea of a few days bedbound but I’m on day2 and it’s not enjoyable.

I don't really have many suggestions other than reading, box sets etc but just want to say that I'm sorry this has happened to you and I hope you feel better soon.

hairyspiderleg · 03/03/2024 21:46

Maybe an office type chair with wheels? Have you crutches? You could use them to push yourself along on the chair, but don't fall out!

AliMonkey · 03/03/2024 21:48

I had both ankles in plaster for a few weeks after an accident. I had a wheelchair, were you not offered one? The Red Cross usually hire them out if you weren't offered an NHS one. Mine was a narrower than standard one so I could just make it through our toilet door. (I was thinner then - doubt I'd fit in it now!) I borrowed some other equipment from the Red Cross, including a grabber and a tilted stool that meant I could get up to the height of the kitchen worktop but still be supported. I did though watch a lot of TV for those few weeks!

Rescue2024 · 03/03/2024 21:50

Thank you Sooty, it’s not how I planned the weekend to end and there are so many things I need to think about.

work, keeping fit and not ceasing up, I already miss standing up! The poor dog is not getting a walk anytime soon as he is scared of the dark and I’m normally the only one home during the day.

You can hire wheelchairs.

I crawled around for a bit. It's not as fun as it looks and it doesn't look fun.

I contemplated trying to use a skateboard by sitting on it but I didn't have a skateboard. Probably a good thing.

Amazing idea! I have my wheelie chair upstairs in the office, you have actually made it all suddenly feel like a fun challenge.
DH is worried about the no brakes situation and me breaking a hip and knee to add to things though…

Have a look at a knee scooter - the Red Cross and other agencies may be able to rent one to you in the short term. Not sure if it'll work perfectly with both feet out of action though!!

Otherwise, crutches if you're allowed to weight bear at all? Use cushions or plastic bags under your butt if sliding across the floor with your hands - makes you more slippy. Obv not on the stairs!

Dog, can a neighbour help? Even just to let him in and out? What time is it dark by you now?

Perhaps a toilet frame to allow you to get on and off the pot more easily? Needs to be one that won't tip though.

I used a wheeled office chair. It wasn't very movable around the house but it was handy to drag myself around the kitchen to get food and drink. I'm so sorry. You're in for an awful funk for a few weeks but it'll be better before you know it.

SoulMole · 03/03/2024 21:56

Oh, and I got a shower stool for about 20 on ebay.

delphi13 · 03/03/2024 21:57

Doing both is a nightmare. I've broken my foot quite a few times and that's bad enough. I asked locally if anyone had a rollator I could buy. Someone gave me one for free and I have sat on that to get about a bit easier and to make my dinner etc. But if you can't put your feet down at all the. It would be hard to manoeuvre. In this situation I would check on local Facebook groups whether anyone had a wheelchair I could buy/borrow or ask a friend/relative to check charity shops locally. Failing that I would hire one. Best of luck to you!

subscribe to duolingo and learn a language - where do you fancy for your next holiday?

TheChosenTwo · 03/03/2024 21:59

Oh gosh what a calamity!
Poor you, did you break one and then the other? Was it a case of breaking them both in the same fall?
We had to buy some crutches recently as dh was unable to weight bare completely on one leg; he was not very steady on them and we decided he was better off without them as we envisaged him catapulting himself into things and causing more damage 🫣
wheely office chair is actually a pretty good idea if you can put a small amount of pressure on the boots and propel yourself along a bit.

TwinklyRoseTurtle · 03/03/2024 21:59

Ask your gp to do an urgent physio at home referral- you need some equipment such as a glide about commode to get you from A to B around the house x

SoulMole · 03/03/2024 21:59

Me again (I'm dyspraxic and hurt myself). A bumbag or a rucksack with phone, water, lunch, kindle etc. You can keep all of your stuff together, move it on your person if you move rooms / sofas. I had dog guilt too.

I did this and it's free. 😀

Octavia64 · 03/03/2024 22:03

For boredom -

The obvious is reading tv podcasts and audiobooks.

Also Duolingo soaks up quite a lot of time.

Openlearn has a lot of courses some of which are quite interesting,

Personally I was out of my head in painkillers and mostly listened to audiobooks.

And Mumsnet of course!

Tr1skel1on · 03/03/2024 22:06

I shattered my ankle a while ago. You need a rucksack and a thermos. If you have to move make it worthwhile. If you have to go to the kitchen make a thermos of tea and lunch while you are there. Pack it in backpack so you have your hands free

2chocolateoranges · 03/03/2024 22:09

Wow, I feel for you, my oh badly broke one heel last year and that was awkward enough never mind the two. He couldn’t put any weight on that foot for 8 weeks and ended up watching lots of Netflix, sleeping loads and reading even more. While for the first week or so he crawled about the house and then ended up balancing about the house on crutches.

was off work for 6months. They are normally really fit and active due to their job so it was a testing time!

Oh you poor thing.

I broke my ankle a little while ago and had plaster up to the knee.

I do NOT know what I would've done without my office chair, as I could scoot up and down the living room and actually carry things, unlike when I had to use the crutches!

Wishing you a speedy recovery Flowers

Rescue2024 · 03/03/2024 22:28

I luckily work from home so we could move the upstairs office things downstairs in the dining room and I good scoot around on my office chair or skateboard. Staying nearer the floor appeals to me at the moment as it’s all very sore and bruised.

I broke both during the same accident on the stairs, I want to live in a bungalow…

Different situation but I had eye surgery a few years ago and had to stay in a facedown position for 3 days, was only allowed to be upright for a maximum of 10 mins an hour to go to the loo or eat. got myself a sunlounger with a face hole and spent 3 days very uncomfortably staring at the floor. To prevent going completely barmy I had Netflix on my iPad, loads and loads of books, crossword puzzles, colouring on the iPad, taught myself to crochet, and slept A LOT, just dozed on and off all day.

How long are you going to be in the boots and limited in mobility? I'd definitely be looking to hire a wheelchair, also looking for supermarkets and shopping centres that have mobility scooters you can use while there and taking advantage of those for outings. You can spend a good couple of hours in a decent supermarket if you browse slowly enough and they have a decent cafe.

TiptoeTess · 03/03/2024 23:06

You poor, poor thing, that sounds absolutely hideous! If you live near me i’ll come and walk your dog and make you a cuppa :)

Otherwise, I think maybe i’d suggest doing yourself a gentle timetable? An hour of netflix, an hour of duolingo, lunch, paint your nails, read for an hour etc? And obviously cake and gin at all times.

Haggisfish3 · 03/03/2024 23:09

Exdh broke his knee cap once. Things that helped him-an insulated cup with very good lid so if he dropped it it stayed intact. A litter grabber to pick things up off floor. A small rucksack to put things in to take with him in house. A dry leg sock thing that meant he could bath and shower without getting cast wet.
