That my sister was out of order and should have apologised?

I'm at my mums for Sunday lunch and sister is here with niece who is 6. My sister has let her bring her roller skates and use them in the kitchen whilst dinner is cooking and she has crashed into the dinner table and knocked a whole up of fizzy drink all over me. I now have to borrow my mums clothes or sit and eat my dinner in soaking wet clothes. She hasn't even apologised. I think she's shows a lack of respect for me or my mums home. My mum has glared at me as if to say shut up and don't say anything.

Your mum should have told her no roller skating in the house especially the kitchen.

Your sister is in the wrong for letting her have any sound on when you are out eating . It ruins it for everyone around them and is extremely selfish. Threads on here have shown that people hate it.

I am not sure what you sister is meant to apologise for. It was just an accident. Your niece should have apologised. I think you are understandably annoyed but your being ott about your sister. I get the impression there are other issues between you instead of just this.

No, I’m saying most 6 year olds don’t understand the meaning of the word respect.

6yos do know to say sorry when they spill something over someone.

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 03/03/2024 15:49

Niece sounds spoiled. Is your sister a gentle parent? I’d think nothing of telling the golden child off.

No my sister has not shown respect for my mums home as she could have broken something, never mind it's dangerous when there is food cooking.

You are 💯 correct. I would be mortified if I was her. She should apologise and get her child to do the same

fabio12 · 03/03/2024 15:50

Most mums in that situation would have told off DD, come and helped with spill and apologised and probably asked their DD to apologise too. If someone had done it in a restaurant, that is what you would expect. I don't have siblings but I would imagine people don't hold them less to account even in a family setting because she is setting an example to her child.

Septemberyears · 03/03/2024 15:53

Your sister sounds stupid. She’s also rude and unfortunately for your niece she’s bringing her up to be rude as well. I wouldn’t bother going to your mums when she’s there if I were you.

You sound very young are you jealous of your niece ?

Sounds hilarious! 😂
You need to find yourself a sense of humour OP! And bob on one of your Mum’s dresses and hide the skates! You will laugh about this one day …

In what way does it sound ‘hilarious?’

Do you think op wanted to be allowed to roller skate around her mums house? 😂

Dostadning · 03/03/2024 16:00

Your sister's an arse but your niece is only six.
Make a brew, have a bath, put your clothes in the machine and move on.
You will have your revenge when your sister has to cope with a marauding, enabled teenager. Wink Wine

Have you read the post it’s down right disrespectful and roller skates in the house this has nothing to do with age or jealousy…HONESTLY 🫤

PonyPatter44 · 03/03/2024 16:03

Why didn't your niece apologise? I'd be sorely tempted to do as a previous poster suggested and pour some pop over her...food fight!!

Or take a wheel off her roller skates...

Mountainpika · 03/03/2024 16:08

YeahIsaidit · 03/03/2024 15:23

Choked on my drink laughing at that

Was it a fizzy drink?

(Well someone had to ask.)

BeingATwatItsABingThing · 03/03/2024 16:08

I wouldn’t allow rollerskating in the house, especially whilst dinner is cooking. However, if it’s not my house or my child, it’s not my call to tell them they can’t do that.

If a young child bumped into something and split a drink on me, I’d feel mildly frustrated about having to clear it up but that would be it. If it wasn’t that bad, I’d just put up with damp clothes for a bit. If it was bad enough, I’d take your mum’s offer up on changing. I can’t imagine I’d be bothered enough to post on MN.

You’d pour a drink over a 6yo?! 🤨

JJathome · 03/03/2024 16:10

How old are you op? I think you sound very young, do you actually live at your mums?

SevenSeasOfRhye · 03/03/2024 16:10

Six years old, the niece shouldn't need prompting to apologise.

Createausername1970 · 03/03/2024 16:11

Allowing a child to roller skate in the kitchen whilst a dinner is being cooked - assuming hot oven doors, pans of boiling water etc - is madness.

Being covered in fizzy drink is annoying, but in comparison to what could have happened if she had crashed into the oven, it's very minor.

I think your sister should have apologised, but I also think you should have spoken up as soon as the niece started skating in the kitchen and suggested she went outside.

Aquamarine1029 · 03/03/2024 16:11

My mum has glared at me as if to say shut up and don't say anything.

I'd be telling your mum that I'll say whatever I feel needs to be said, and this wouldn't have happened in the first place if she had told her granddaughter not to roller skate in the fucking kitchen.

Love this my thoughts exactly…

ThirtyThrillionThreeTrees · 03/03/2024 16:14

She's 6. Your sister may be a twat but a childish just a child and they take their lead from their parents.

Why are you sitting there soaking wet? It appears very dramatic. Do what everyone else does in this situation - grab a hairdryer and dry yourself off a bit. Sitting there wet is just pointless.
