Cost of wrap around care

Allboundformoomooland · 02/03/2024 09:20

I live in Yorkshire and wrap around care is available at my children's school, via a private company. They can provide breakfast and snacks.

From April the cost per child will be £25 for morning and afternoon (£10 AM for 90 minutes and £15 PM for up to 3 hrs but most leave after 2.5 hrs).

I appreciate that living wage, energy costs etc are adding to this cost but it feels high and prohibitively expensive for many.

If you use similar care in the North, could you please share the cost so I can see if it's relatively high and raise with the school if so?

Not thinking of raising this for myself but for others in the community.

Demand will also play a role, here most families have two working parents, no one can afford for SAHMs even those in professional careers, because of the cost of housing and lots of commuters working long hours. In cheaper areas you're more likely to have one parent at home or part time meaning the demand for ASC will be less.

Very true. It's an expensive town but lots seem to have flexible jobs. Maybe I overestimated the 50 children per day.

Breakfast club from 8-8.30 is £4, not sure if you get food?!
After school club up till 5.30 is £9 including a snack.

We're in an expensive area and parents mostly have professional jobs. More and more families are just bringing the DC home at 3 rather than paying for wraparound, especially the older ones. We're not there yet as ours are too small to keep themselves occupied but I'd say we'll do it in future when they're older, at least a few days a week.

This is our costs. It is south coast area.

Ours is £3 in the morning, but just from 8am, so it's only 30 mins and run by the school itself, but does include breakfast. After school is £15 regardless of how long the stay, but can be up to 3 hours, and they get a snack.

HFJ · 02/03/2024 09:51

If you think that’s bad, wait till they get to uni and you’re having to pay their rent.

mrsnjw · 02/03/2024 09:51

South east here
Breakfast club £5 7.45-8.45. If you come after 8.15 it's 2.50 but with no breakfast.

After school £15 per session. I think siblings are a bit cheaper.

Alliolly · 02/03/2024 09:51

Sounds absolutely normal if they do extended hours.
Our after school club is £10, but it's only 2h and it doesn't include food. West Midlands

pastabest · 02/03/2024 09:53

Breakfast club is £3 but only runs from 8am - 8.30 and then 'free' supervised play for all children in the school on the playground by a teacher on duty 8.30 - 8.45

after school club is £4 3.15 - 4.30 and another £4 for 4.30 - 5.30

we can use tax free childcare though for both so for a full day wraparound 8am - 5.30 with breakfast provided and sandwiches a fruit in the afternoon would actually cost £8.80 per day (£11 without TFC)

Flora56 · 02/03/2024 09:53

Breakfast club 7:30-8:45 - £5
After school club 3:30-5:45 - £10
Both include food.

Bunnycat101 · 02/03/2024 09:54

Seems pretty standard. Were £16 for after school 3-6 and £5 for morning club but that is only 45 minutes for £10 for 90 minutes seems fair.

Redtedbed · 02/03/2024 09:56

£5 for breakfast club which is 7.45-8.50
After school club is £15 for 3.20-5.50pm includes a light meal. Both run by the school.

GRex · 02/03/2024 09:56

Breakfast club £6 for 7.45-8.45
Afterschool club £14 for 3.15-6
Extra charges if it's booked on the week or for late pick-up.

Activity costs and times vary; mostly 8-8.45 or 3.15 - 4 .30 but price varies from £1 to £150/ term.
Reduce ASC price if doing an activity.

We are in outer London so it seems cheap to me, particularly compared with swimming!! Sounds similar to yours, but economy of scale might have a small impact if your school is very small.

sleepyscientist · 02/03/2024 09:56

I'm further north than you, breakfast club 7:45-8:45 £, after school club is £4.50 until 16:15 or £5.50 until 17:15. Single form entry church school. Really only suitable for reception to year 5 as most the year 6's get their own way home.

christologymum · 02/03/2024 09:59

Ours is £2.50 for morning club, 8-8.45 includes breakfast and after school is £4 until 5pm, it used to be £6 until 6pm but they changed it recently. Saying there was no need for a 6pm finish but when I used to collect my DD at 5.30 there was still usually 5/6 kid s left so don't understand that at all.
After Easter I will be using a different after school that involves collecting her and taking her off site, this will be £12.50 a day but includes food. Unfortunately having to collect her at 5 has been a challenge as even if I'm working from home I still need to leave at 4.50 and increasingly I'm having to leave meetings early to get her.
Im pleased to have found the new provision as theres a shortage of childminders and it will stop the stress of rushing to finish for 5pm.

Floralsofa · 02/03/2024 09:59

I pay £180 a month (North West) for before/after school with a childminder Monday - Wednesday. The school provision is of a very similar price (but a waiting list)

FuckoffeeBeforeCoffee · 02/03/2024 09:59

At ours, breakfast club is £5 for care from 7:50-8:45.

Afterschool it's £8.50 for 3:15-5, £9.50 until 5:30 and £10.50 until 6.

OopsOutnumbered123 · 02/03/2024 10:03

Ours is £3 for breakfast club (7:45-8:30), £4 for 3:15-4:15 and £10 for 3:15-6:00pm. So full wrap around care 7:45 to 6pm is £14.

This is in Shropshire and you can book on the day until 11am.

EllieQ · 02/03/2024 10:03

The ASC numbers at the club I use dropped after covid, which I assume was due to more people wfh and being able to pick up from school and continue working at home while the children watch TV or something. I did wonder whether it would be able to stay open.

Numbers have risen again, but I’ve noticed that it’s mainly younger children and DD is one of the oldest there (Year 4).

Tatonka · 02/03/2024 10:05

Surely their costs are their costs. Yoi complaining won't change that

Sweetheart7 · 02/03/2024 10:11

West Yorkshire here. Breakfast club is free opens at 8am. No after school available only something till 16.15 for £1.

The parents at my school simple would not be able to afford £25 per child 5x a week. I notice they have 3 DC on average some have more.

My friend pays £16.50 same area different school to me.

spudnik1 · 02/03/2024 10:17

Morning. I am in the North West. Our school took the provision in house a couple of years ago.
Morning session 7.30am till 9am £8.50
Afternoon session 3.30pm till 5.30pm no provision after this . £5.50

There is a 50p per session reduction for subsequent children.

There are typically 2 members of staff in the school hall. Toys are out, and it's a free play session.

They get breakfast of toast in the morning, and the afternoon is a snack, usually a small sandwich and a piece of fruit.

You can use tax-free childcare

TenderChicken · 02/03/2024 10:55

Our primary in Yorkshire is £4.60 for the one hour before school, and £7.90 for the two hours after. So £12.50 a day. Half the price of yours! though you get longer hours.

PSEnny · 02/03/2024 11:01

Use tax free childcare to make it cheaper. I pay around £5 per hour. Before school club doesn’t open until 8 so 1 hr in the morning then you pay hourly for the afterschool up to 6pm. My bill is around £200 per month and I pay through tax free childcare. I put around £150 in here each month (including the summer) and rarely need to add more. My child attends for around 12 hrs a week.

gano · 02/03/2024 11:03

I'm in the midlands and pay £3.20 for breakfast club (1 hour, with breakfast included) and £10 for ASC (3.15-6pm, with a light tea included).
