To think most people must hate their jobs?

Or am I just so bloody unlucky?

I've just switched jobs again and already not convinced it's for me. I am sticking it out for a couple of years before moving on but god, i can't be arsed to dread going to work!

Is this just life? I want to be at home with my kids and if I'm going to be away from them and putting them in childcare I want to atleast feel like it's somewhat enjoyable. But it never is!

Haven't RTFT but job satisfaction is somewhat heritable (genetic) according to twin studies. What that means is you are probably one of the unfortunately people who won't really like any job.

I'm fortunate in that I love mine. But also quite liked working in a call centre, working retail. Probably genetic.

@Peachandwatermelon I work for a charity now. My colleagues are much nicer to me than when I worked at a school !

goodkidsmaadhouse · 01/03/2024 14:12

@CurbsideProphet curious what you hated about it?

@goodkidsmaadhouse some of the teachers weren't very nice to me and I was so unhappy, always feeling like I was walking on eggshells.

Meadowfinch · 01/03/2024 14:42

OP, I like my job but I'm 60 and I won't be sad to stop.

However, until that day comes, I see my job as a way to give us a good life. A way to have a warm secure home and good food. That's what keeps me going.

Maybe your expectations of 'enjoyment' are a bit high.

Also, I had four months furloughed during covid which was my chance to be a SAHM. By the end, I was more than ready for DS to go back to school. 😀

HelpMeOutOfHere · 01/03/2024 14:54

I love my job but I think that's probably unusual. I feel so thankful I stumbled into my career over 2 decades ago.

usernother · 01/03/2024 14:56

A lot depends on the people you work with for me. A job you don't particularly enjoy can feel a lot better if you have good people and a bit of a laugh at work every day.

allfurcoatnoknickers · 01/03/2024 15:17

I like my job! I've had jobs before this I HATED though.

WildBear · 01/03/2024 15:26

I work 3 days from home and barely have anything to do. My time is my own. Still, I have decided to change roles as it's pretty unsatisfying and I want to get my teeth stuck into something! Definitely don't hate work though as even the 2 days in the office are easy enough going, everyone is nice, plenty of breaks, etc.

Mumofyellows · 01/03/2024 15:32

I love my job, absolutely hated my previous career so shad to take a massive pay cut and then retrain but I'm so glad I did. You spend too much time in life at work to be miserable in your job.

Patrickiscrazy · 01/03/2024 15:50

Hm. I understand.
I have been a stay at home wife for the last 25 years, my choice and luck. Child free, husband retired very early.
I'm also a carer and a homemaker.
I know how to work, even these "male" jobs, but it was always really as you said, the dread of going to work and for me also wanting to have as few people around me as possible.
Everyone is different.
😊

Me. Same shit different job title. Started out in administration, worked my way up to band 5 NHS admin job. Miserable. Hate it. No qualifications or area of expertise. Not against re-training but as what?! Don't know where to go from here.

This is depressing! I've just got up to a band 4 NHS admin job and it sucks to think that is comes to a halt really (not from your post, but just what be experienced as well from colleagues)

SusanSHelit · 01/03/2024 15:55

I'm one of the very lucky ones who genuinely really likes their job but if someone handed me a big fat check so that I never had to work another day I would skip out of there without a second look back. I'd much rather be going on adventures with my ds!

I will never ever work in retail again though. I think I would actually rather starve.

pinkhousesarebest · 01/03/2024 15:58

I’ve done 38 years in teaching and I have either hated it, endured it or accepted it ( finally) but never liked it. I do feel grateful though that it has enabled me to enjoy my life outside work, which is vastly more important. And I have always been able to work despite moving countries.
In fairness, my ambitions always lay elsewhere - house, family, garden, animals.

mynameiscalypso · 01/03/2024 16:00

I'm also one of those annoying people who loves their job. I feel excited on a Sunday evening (although I often work at the weekend too). My hobbies are related to my job and I'm just starting a related academic qualification in my 'spare' time.

SnapdragonToadflax · 01/03/2024 16:01

I've only had a couple of temp jobs I truly hated. All my permanent jobs have been fine - decent and sometimes fantastic people, nice office environment, interesting work.

Maybe you haven't found the right job type for you yet? What is it you hate specifically?

Alphabet1spaghetti2 · 01/03/2024 16:04

I don’t enjoy mine. I did use to hate it, but I now just see it as a way of filtering money into my bank account - so no longer give it any thought beyond that.

Buuty · 01/03/2024 16:21

Many people don’t like work. They tolerate it as they have to. I have had spells where I have hated it but the money is good, the flexibility I get now is brilliant and I work with the public so get to chat about things with them and enjoy that side of it. I’m coming up to retirement in the next 5 years though and won’t miss it.

TeeBee · 01/03/2024 16:23

I love mine. I've only ever not enjoyed one of my jobs so I stuck it out for a year, then moved on. Life's too short to dread working every day.

I like my job, im
lucky that it’s hybrid and I’d actually like more time with coworkers 😁

NewName24 · 01/03/2024 17:00

YABU.

Like most people, I know there are things about my job that are annoying or frustrating, but overall I've enjoyed all the jobs I've had over the decades.
'Hate' is a strong word, and not something I'd want to be doing for 40 hours a week, so I suspect I'd move on if I did. the odd thing about your OP though is that you seem to imply that it isn't one job, but several jobs ? In which case I;d look at the common factor here.

Rosesanddaisies1 · 01/03/2024 17:02

I've never hated a job. I think it depends on your attitude and perspective. I see it as a means to an end, I do what I need to and don't care or worry about bigger workplace issues. I never work beyond my paid hours, life's too short.

PupInAPram · 01/03/2024 17:29

Honeyglazed · 01/03/2024 13:23

Why would you stay in a job you don’t enjoy?

Errrm..to live??

Midlifecrisisat38 · 01/03/2024 17:31

This is why I'm self employed. To work for someone else after the shit show of jobs I've had just fills me with dread.

Self employment all the way for me.

Oh, that’s horrible. I’ve always worked with lovely teachers and can see how it would make the job really tough to have the opposite experience.
