Worried about Mosquitoes in Majorca in May

Bunnybear42 · 01/03/2024 11:36

Hi

I Wondered if anyone had been to Majorca in early May and what the Mosquito situation is likely to be as looking online it talks about it being very bad but unsure if this applies to all of the island and also this time of year. We are staying in Palma Nova.

I'm Interested to know if need to wear repellant all day and whether you need extra measures in hotel room (ie keep balcony door closed at all times etc).

Any tips/ advice greatly appreciated- also recommendations for repellent for 2 year old .

Thank you 🙂

We went in early May years ago and zero issue

Mindymomo · 01/03/2024 11:46

We’ve never had a problem, but Avon Skin so Soft is a very safe moisturiser that also appears to be a good repellent.

MassageForLife · 01/03/2024 11:47

I suspect it won't be great, mosquito wise.

The mosquito situation in Spain seems to have got worse over the last few years. I haven't been to Majorca, but was went to the same place at the same time of year, about five years apart. First time - no mosquitos. The second time - had a few bites, despite taking precautions.

We were recommended to use this. It's not technically mosquito repellent, but it does work, but needs to be applied regularly. It's designed for babies, so safe for your two year old. It's fairly cheap in Spain, but we had to check a few places before we found it. https://amzn.eu/d/0YTgVSj

I’d get one of those natural repellent bands for LO and put it on their ankle.

no amount of jungle formula ever stops me getting bitten so I just tend to go with it!

Lolarose999 · 01/03/2024 11:51

I went to Alcudia, granted in August, but was bitten alive. I've been back a few times, and the same each time. During the day, I used tea tree spray as a repellent, and if I was out during the night, say at table watching entertainment or having drink, id light a citronella candle (outside only) which helped.

We’ve been going to the Balearic Islands all year round for about 20 years, and they’re definitely getting worse each year!
Avon skin so soft has changed the formula so doesn’t seem to work anymore unfortunately.
Tried the bracelets for the last two years and didn’t seem to make any difference.
I’m going straight to the chemist from the airport and buy the stuff the pharmacist recommends, about 25euro for a tiny bottle but it’s the only thing that stops them…

Mumof2teens79 · 01/03/2024 12:09

We went to Alcudia. It very much depends where you spend your evenings.
Our hotel had a lake, and open air entertainment venue....plus in Alcudia the main "strip" with the tourist bars is by the canal.
People who spent their nights there were covered in bites.

We stayed further away from the lake, in the quieter bar, and if we went out went to restaurants by the port and had very few bites....but we did also use jungle formula insect repellent every night before we went out.

We didn't use anything in the room but we have previously in Greece...especially if on a lower floor. They live in the drains and hide in corners and come out at night.so get a plug in and leave it on through the day. You can then hopefully turn it off at night.

Teamarugula · 01/03/2024 12:14

I don’t know about what it’s like in Majorca but we always use Incognito repellent which is suitable from 6 months. They have one where it’s sun cream and repellent in one as well.

Ifulikepinacoladas · 01/03/2024 12:18

Not sure if it's massively helpful but went to Ibiza mid June last year, and Majorca early Oct. No mosquitos either time for us.

AdriftAbroad1 · 01/03/2024 12:24

Terrible mosquitoes at the moment on the beach front in Valencia.
Enormous tiger ones!
Its humid and hot in May.

AdriftAbroad1 · 01/03/2024 12:26

Geta spray from Mercadona or similar and spray room an hour before bed.

Caroparo52 · 01/03/2024 12:29

Use the locally recommended mossie stuff.
Avon skin so soft used to be great but not so much now.
Wear long sleeves and trousers at dusk.
Eat marmite and wave a cigarette about in the evenings.
I attract every mosquito within 1 mile.
Take strongest you can get antihistanime tablets and creams with you.
Little fuckers

Movinghouseatlast · 01/03/2024 12:29

Please don't risk Avon Skin So Soft. It's not an insect repellent and there is no scientific evidence it works. I got bitten alive when I used it.

A repellent with Deet is your best bet- jungle formula or Boots own brand.

ShinyBandana · 01/03/2024 12:39

We take jungle formula with us but also buy repellent from local chemists who tend to be good at advising on what works well locally. Also we invest in several plug-in devices for overnight. I only book places that have aircon so we can keep the windows closed at night and that helps a lot.

I don’t think I’ve ever been bitten during the day but from early evening onwards we use sprays and if sitting on balcony then we have citronella burners/candles too (from local supermarkets). Long sleeves and trousers also help.

My youngest got bitten badly in Greece a few years ago and we found that antihistamine drops (again, bought from a local chemist) were very effective and calpol helps too. We’ve managed quite well the last few years using all the precautions I’ve mentioned.

Idontjetwashthefucker · 01/03/2024 12:47

Used to live in Majorca, never had an issue with mozzies at any time of year.

Agree with a PP, the Avon stuff doesn't work for everyone, I got bitten to fuck in Cyprus whilst using that.

Qwertyyui · 01/03/2024 12:52

I always jungle fever myself! Prevention is better than a cure! I ended up bitten in Italy because I didn't realise they would be an issue and my body was very mad at me! There were ones when I was out last year and the year before so I would take some just in case! x

PoshCoffee · 01/03/2024 12:54

Where in Mallorca are you going, OP?
Ive been to Puerto Pollensa and had no problems, down the road in Alcudia I’ve been bitten alive by huge mozzies

Wifisbad · 01/03/2024 13:01

I also lived in Mallorca for a year.

Palma Nova I've never had any major issues.
The North however is a different story. I was living in Can Picafort and had around 30 bites at one point. It was awful.

I've been to the South lots of times though and never seem to have the same problem.

Sitting on the balcony at night which I love is when I tend to get bitten most.

I never found anything that stopped the bites but apparently a course of antihistamines before you travel can stop them being so bad.

Mementomorissons · 01/03/2024 13:08

I've been all over Majorca in may and genuinely never been bitten once. Italy on the other hand...

Bunnybear42 · 01/03/2024 13:13

@PoshCoffee Palma Nova x

Thank you everyone so far for you really helpful replies

I went to Santa Ponsa area of Majorca last August and had no issues at all with mosquitoes! I'd brought all the stuff but never needed it

unsync · 01/03/2024 13:29

Not for Spain, but Mediterranean. I always get whatever the local chemist recommends. I also have one of these https://www.beurer.com/uk/p/60617/ for any bites. It stops the itch almost immediately, a tech version of the hot teaspoon method. The trouble woth tiger mossies is that they are active all day, not just in the evening like the 'normal' ones.

We’ve never had a problem, but Avon Skin so Soft is a very safe moisturiser that also appears to be a good repellent.

Years ago one of the Avon range was the best bug repellent ever, we were on a tour of India and other people had some seriously expensive repellents but we were the only ones not bitten! Wish I could recall the name, we're looking at 20+ years ago.

IamnotSethRogan · 01/03/2024 14:05

Start taking antihistamines a few weeks before you go. I react very badly to bites and this mixed with a repellant really helped.

Jandob · 01/03/2024 14:33

Buy plug in liquid repellent for indoors. Deet repellent eg jungle formula. Kids often not bitten as much. Cover up in evenings.
