How much fruit & veg do you buy per week?

Heythereorangehead · 28/02/2024 14:46

And have you had to cut back?
Sort of related to a thread on here already.
Our food shop has gone up around €30/40 per week (live abroad) we both work and have one Dd and a dog. I used to buy lots of veg, salad, fruits etc.
This week I got brocolli, cauliflower, carrots, 1 avocado, tangerines & apples. Dd eats nearly all the fruit and has one fruit for school dinners, I don’t tend to get any fruit now. We used to have fruit for breakfast and after lunch/dinner and lunches & dinners filled with veg, I really feel I’m not getting enough.
How much do you buy and how can I get more fruit/veg in without spending even more?

I have kale and cabbage in the garden at the moment for extra greens, I throw in nettles too. I have peas and beans in, but not up yet. Raspberries and rhubarb are coming to life.

mindutopia · 28/02/2024 21:49

We buy quite a lot of fruit and veg.

It’s by far the cheapest part of our shop every week though, much cheaper than the kids snacks and other fresh food like meat, cheese, butter, any processed food. So I tend to try to make it a big part of what we eat.

We buy probably 3 packs of apples, a big bunch of bananas, a melon, grapes, random other fruit. So the kids often have a piece of fruit with breakfast and then 2 more in the afternoon when they get home.

Plus we have at least one veg with every dinner, so steamed broccoli or sautéed kale or roasted carrots, but sometimes more like with a mostly veg based meal. I do grow a lot of my own veg, so I don’t have to buy all of it.

I would say I spend about £20-30 per shop on fruit and veg, in a shop that’s usually £100-120 a week, so I consider that quite reasonable.

This thread is an eye opener for me on how much people spend on fruit and veg and the amount they get through!
Never buy out of season berries.Total rip off. Currently buy bananas, satsumas,British apples for fruit. Veg is usually onions, bell peppers, broccoli, leeks and potatoes. Frozen peas.Veg is very cheap to buy I find and we are eating more veggie and less meat based meals now.

Fruit is insanely expensive.

I spend £200 a week on a food shop (just me). About half of that is fruit and veg. BUT I like ‘nice fruit.’ I haven’t had to cut back simply because I prioritise my diet above all else - I don’t eat meals out, have fast food, buy lots of new clothes etc. if I did those things I’d have had to cut back.

I get frozen fruit for smoothies (huge packs of frozen mixed berries rather than frozen smoothie mixes) and mix with a banana and some milk. Sometimes add oats. That’s relatively cheap. Usually makes 5-6 smoothies. Or I do banana pancakes with topped banana and yoghurt. Again, quite cheap.

On weeks I can’t get the fruit I want I’ll do things like chilli con carne with cauliflower rice etc, to bulk out my veg I take instead. Or sausage casserole bulked out with lots of peppers and onions etc

Just you?

We spend that and there are six of us!

ScribblingPixie · 28/02/2024 22:07

What are the cheapest types of veg where you live, OP? And what kind of price would it be? I eat homemade mixed veg soup most days so I'd basically buy whatever was most affordable. Put in all the stalks too, trimmings, everything.

HelloDarlingWhatAreYouDoingHere · 28/02/2024 22:07

Anyway, we buy a lot of fruit - twice a week. Apples, oranges, bananas, grapes, kiwi, plums, passion fruit.

Lots of salad veg - lettuce, tomatoes, cucumbers, radish, celery, peppers, carrots, spinach, rocket, fennel.

Wallabyone · 28/02/2024 22:15

I buy lots; I always have to do a fruit and veg top up midweek too.
Usual order contains
2 cucumbers
Cherry vine tomatoes
Carrots
Spring onions
Brown onions
Courgettes
Broccoli
Baby corn
Mange tout
Mushrooms

Grapes
Strawberries
Blueberries
Raspberries
Melon
Pineapple
Apples
Oranges
Nectarines/peaches or plums
Kiwi

Plus anything else I see on my top up shop that usually ends up being pretty substantial.
Food has gone up a lot-I feel fortunate that we can get all this for our family.

Why are you all spending so much on berries that are out of season?

WontLetThoseRobotsDefeatMe · 28/02/2024 22:46

For 2 adults,

  • 800g rhubarb made into a crumble eaten over a few days (2 supermarket packs)
  • bag of spuds
  • 250g tomatoes punnet for lunches and snacks
We also had last weeks tomatoes to use up so cooked them
  • mixed peppers bag of 3
  • frozen peas
  • frozen mixed veg
  • pak choi x2
  • radish bag for snacks
  • bananas bunch
  • half a dozen apples
  • sprig onions loads
user1471428569 · 28/02/2024 22:47

I live in France and spend about 30€ per week for 2 huge bag for life but only with in season fruit and veg.

user1471428569 · 28/02/2024 22:46

Why are you all spending so much on berries that are out of season?

I like them all year around

Sushimad · 29/02/2024 01:28

3 adults, although 1 doesn't eat every meal with us. I've been buying strawberries, raspberries and blueberries (requested by 1 adult) for about the last 3 weeks, Probably 1 of each punnet every 10 days, which I wouldn't usually do out of season.

Instead, we normally have a 1kg bag of frozen red berries and a 400g bag of blueberries 🫐 in the freezer for smoothies and breakfast toppings.

Generally I go shopping about once every 10 days and always buy:
14 bananas 🍌 (2 packs of 7)
12 Granny Smith apples 🍎 (2 packs)
5 oranges 🍊
1kg wonky grapes 🍇 (2 punnets)

Every few weeks, I'll mix it up a bit and also buy 2 or 3 other items such as:

a punnet of plums, nectarines/ peaches 🍑 or kiwi fruit 🥝 or
a bag of pears 🍐
and some tangerines/clementines/satsumas, etc.

I also buy dried fig, dates, prunes, apricots and sultanas, and every few months, or as needed, I'll buy lemons 🍋 and/or limes.

I generally buy what's on offer (the same with all my shopping).

Veg-wise, every shop we buy:

2 iceberg lettuces 🥬
3-4 cucumbers 🥒
12 salad tomatoes 🍅 (2 packs)
2 bags of mixed peppers 🫑 (about 1.2kg in total)
1 bunch spring onions

Sometimes these salad items require topping up before I would do another main shop.

We also always have in stock (either bought frozen already, or bought fresh and stored, then frozen if necessary):

potatoes 🥔 red+white (baking, roasting, mash)
brown onions🧅
red onions
garlic 🧄
Ginger, fresh 🫚 which I freeze
mushrooms 🍄‍🟫
aubergines 🍆 which I prep and freeze
leeks which I prep and freeze
Broccoli 🥦 usually bought frozen
Beetroot, cooked
Cauliflower, usually bought frozen
Peas 🫛 frozen and mushy (tinned)
Green beans, usually bought frozen
Carrots 🥕 usually bought fresh
Edamame beans
Broad beans
Sweetcorn/corn on the cob 🌽
Avocados 🥑 bought when on offer and frozen
Courgettes

I also regularly buy cherry tomatoes, and once every few months, I'll buy these, as needed:

celery
butternut squash
sweet potatoes
mangetout, sugar snap peas
and any other veg as required for a recipe I'm making, eg, beansprouts.

I also keep a stock of tinned and dried pulses, as well as tinned tomatoes and a few tins of sweetcorn, potatoes, carrots, etc.

I would estimate that just over half the cost of my shopping (if not more) is spent on fruit and vegetables of some description.

If it wasn't for my adult dc (19) still living with us, I wouldn't buy fresh berries out of season at all, though.

I've definitely noticed a large increase in prices, too, often alongside a decrease in the size of the product.

coxesorangepippin · 29/02/2024 01:34

We eat quite a lot veg but more in summer I think

I get a lot of whatever fruit is on special- this week it was grapes, last week strawberries

Then the usual bananas, I'd say two bunches a week

Veg would average 4/5 onions, 2 kilos spuds, a broccoli, carrots and a cauliflower. Try and eat spinach too

coxesorangepippin · 29/02/2024 01:35

I also make tons of apple sauce when apples are cheap and we have that throughout the winter

Sushimad · 29/02/2024 01:43

There's rarely* *any waste, and I tend to freeze things like the cauliflower/broccoli stalks, etc, to use in soups at a later date.

At this time of year, though, my mainstays are apples, bananas, oranges, grapes, lettuce, cucumbers, tomatoes, mixed peppers and onions, including spring onions.

We also occasionally buy mangoes 🥭 when needed for a recipe we love (mango chicken).
