How much fruit & veg do you buy per week?

Heythereorangehead · 28/02/2024 14:46

And have you had to cut back?
Sort of related to a thread on here already.
Our food shop has gone up around €30/40 per week (live abroad) we both work and have one Dd and a dog. I used to buy lots of veg, salad, fruits etc.
This week I got brocolli, cauliflower, carrots, 1 avocado, tangerines & apples. Dd eats nearly all the fruit and has one fruit for school dinners, I don’t tend to get any fruit now. We used to have fruit for breakfast and after lunch/dinner and lunches & dinners filled with veg, I really feel I’m not getting enough.
How much do you buy and how can I get more fruit/veg in without spending even more?

It’s the fruit really that’s expensive, a small packet of blueberries/raspberries/blackberries are almost €5, there looks around 15 at most in the pack

I buy a bunch of 6 bananas, 2 bags of 6 apples one red and one green, punnet of grapes, a yellow melon, punnet of raspberries, sometimes punnet of strawberries but just for smoothies as fresh strawberries don't taste nice until end of June/early July. I often buy either 4 oranges or satsumas but they are hard to get them now, or easy peelers if nothing else is available. We also have frozen blueberries, blackcurrants and a raspberry mix for smoothies. We are 2 adults and one teen boy, who eats most of the fruit. DH often has to pick up more bananas and grapes. It is expensive but I don't buy crisps, quavers or chocolate biscuits of any kind. No cereal either because we have fruit and yoghurt for breakfast. I buy a lot of fresh vegetables too. Every week a cauliflower, large bag of carrots, a swede, onions, most weeks some leaks and frozen petit pois. A bag of rocket leaves, a bag of lettuce, carrot battens, cherry tomatoes, tomatoes on the vine and sometimes the yellow tomatoes on vine too. DH makes fresh vegetable soup for us. We like fresh orange bits too with bits. I only buy one bottle a week but it's gone after day 3-4.

Just been to local outdoor Market.. plenty of fruit and veg stalls.. so cheap.. half price of supermarkets..
I bought loads..

Alaimo · 28/02/2024 18:19

We buy quite a bit, but mostly cheaper fruit: bananas, apples, pears. At this time of year lots of satsumas. Only ever buy fresh berries in summer/early autumn. And grow strawberries in my garden.

As is common in my current country of residence, lots of workplaces here get fruit deliveries, so I usually get at least one free piece of fruit a day at work too.

Dacadactyl · 28/02/2024 18:23

Sometimes I buy more, sometimes less. Today I bought:

2 mangoes
1 pineapple
1 melon
8 bananas
2 bags satsumas
5 avocados
1 bag leafy greens
1 bag of salad
1 broccoli
1 bag of peppers
1 bag green beans
1 cucumber
1 pack of mushrooms
1 lot of grapes
1 family pack tomatoes
1 pack sweet potato
1 bag of carrots
1 punnet blueberries

ETA 1 pack red onions

All this, plus the rest of my shop (which included half a side of salmon, a chicken and 2 packs of 5% fat beef mince) came to 101 quid.

AuntieMarys · 28/02/2024 18:29

Rubbishconfession · 28/02/2024 18:34

I low carb so need a lot of veg for that as can't eat bread/pasta/lentils etc. I work near a supermarket so pick up lots of yellow stickered bargains on my way home.

I'm also time poor so particularly love the pre-packed bags of veg I can heat in the microwave. They're expensive full price but work out well at 70% off and the 3 for 2 offers work on the reduced items as well, so even better.

In my fridge at the moment

  • 3 packs of pre-packed green beans, baby corn and carrots
  • 2 packs of asparagus and tenderstem broccoli
  • 2 bags of sweet gem lettuce
  • 2 packs of vine tomatoes
  • 1 pack of spring onions
  • 1 bag of avocados
  • 1 bag of cauliflower florets
  • 1 cucumber
  • 1 bag of courgettes
  • 1 pack of raspberries
  • 1 bag of spinach

It will gone by the end of the week.

Ginmonkeyagain · 28/02/2024 18:34

That's a lot of bananas for 2 people!

Pickled21 · 28/02/2024 18:36

Apples, grapes, tangerines, pears, raspberries and blueberries as well as banannas are added to our shop every week. In terms of vegetables it does differ depend on what I am cooking but I get at least a bag of potatoes a week and salad items such as cucumber, lettuce, radishes, tomatoes and carrots. I would add either spinach or kale and always buy peppers. This week I will pick up a cauliflower and every other week I get onions. The week after I will get some okra. Two of mine take a packed lunch so take fruit and we have at least 3 nights a week that are vegetarian meals. I bulk buy lentils and chickpeas.

DGPP · 28/02/2024 18:38

Family of 5, about £80 on fruit and veg alone. We do eat loads

caringcarer · 28/02/2024 18:56

Heythereorangehead · 28/02/2024 17:14

I’m getting nowhere near the same amount I used to
Are frozen berries as good for you as fresh ones, do you just defrost and eat?

I buy a mixed bag of frozen raspberries, blueberries and blackcurrant and put it in smoothies. It has the same vitamins as fresh but obviously fresh tastes as bit nicer.

caringcarer · 28/02/2024 18:58

In the summer I grow a lot of my own fruit and vegetables. I have about 30 raspberry canes, strawberry plants, chery tomatoes, tomatoes, runner beans, lettuce and herbs. We also have 2 cooking apple trees and a plum tree.

EcoCustard · 28/02/2024 19:10

There are 6 of us (4 Dc under 10) and they eat a lot of fruit & veg.
From the supermarket:
2 melons
18-20 apples
Banana’s
3 punnets of grapes
Oranges
seasonal fruit
3kgs of carrots
Celery
Tomatoes
4 cucumbers
Green beans
Lettuce
Beetroot
squash
Frozen blueberries, peas, sweetcorn & beans.
I get our greens from the farm down the road (we live in Brassica country) kale, Broccoli, cabbage & Cauliflower or whatever is available. We get potatoes by the sackful every 2 months.

It’s a huge part of the shop, we cook a lot and they take fruit snacks to school. Tomatoes we have cut back on as they are expensive, we grow our own in the summer.

Matilda1981 · 28/02/2024 19:15

This week so far we’ve got through 4 punnets of strawberries, 1 of raspberries, 1 of blueberries, 4 bananas and 4 apples and 4 kiwi fruit, veg we have only got through 2 bags baby potatoes, 1 cucumber, 1 spring onion, 1 red onion, 2 peppers (this is all since Monday morning), I’ll end up buying more fruit tomorrow - I’ve got 4 kids age 3-12 and the amount they eat is crazy!

Caspianberg · 28/02/2024 19:19

We don’t eat frozen berries raw. I warm
them and add like a hot berry compot to waffles, pancakes or Greek yogurt.

My 3 year old will happily eat waffles with Greek yogurt and hot berries. Even though he’s fussy for most things

laeenim · 28/02/2024 19:22

We buy quite a lot of fruit, the dcs have a snack box packed up with a mix of peeled/chopped fruit daily, and DH and I share a fruit salad every day too. Grapes, strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, tangerines, oranges, mangos, pears, apples, bananas, melon. We get broccoli, cauliflower, pak choi, cucumbers tomatoes, green beans, mushrooms, potatoes, carrots. Family of 5, it all gets eaten.

londonmummy1966 · 28/02/2024 19:39

Three of us - the weekly shop had

Pears (we had surplus apples at home), easy peelers, frozen berries, tinned sweet corn, tinned black eye beans, green beans, leeks, red onions, spring onions, frozen spinach, frozen peas, celery, tomatoes - round and cherry, passata, iceberg, broccoli, cauliflower garlic, lemons.

I top up with "nicer fruit" so far grapes and will probably buy some peaches or apricots or plums later in the week.

NerdWhoEatsMedlar · 28/02/2024 19:41

I start with what's on the allotment
Beetroot
Jerusalem artichokes
Goose berries (frozen)
Kale

Then Aldi's super 6
Swede
Grapes
Easy peelers
Limes
baby sweetcorn
Apples

Then top up as needed
Carrots, always
Celeriac or celery
Pak choi or chinese leaves or spinach
parsnips
Savoy cabbage
white or red cabbage
cherry toms
radish
Mushroom
Big bag of peppers and maybe a couple of single ones
onions, red, brown and spring
spring greens or brussel sprouts.

Not much in the way of salad or berries in the Winter. I try to keep it reasonably seasonal.

Plus I keep a fair bit of frozen veg in the freezer: peas, broad beans, whole leaf spinach, okra, chilli, ginger, stir fry, mixed peppers, random berries.

Futb0l · 28/02/2024 19:45

A lot - but its rather cheap. I try and choose seasonal where possible (not, as it happens, in february in the uk)

2 adults 2 primary aged kids and this week we had the list below plus frozen peas and tinned sweetcorn already had in. This is quite typical list for us & kids have fruit & salad in packed lunches, after school for snacks etc.

Dwarf beans
Broccoli
Asparagus
Carrots
Swede
Spinach
Lettuce
Cucumber
Parsnip
Red peppers
Beetroot
Potatoes
Mango
Cantaloupe melon
Apples
Grapes (black and green)
Blueberries
Raspberries
Bananas

Comedycook · 28/02/2024 19:45

Every week I buy

Carrots
Cucumber
A pepper
Broccoli
Potatoes
Spring onions
Sugar snap peas
Lettuce
Tomatoes

Bananas
Oranges
Pears

I might buy more unusual stuff for certain recipes on top but these are the basics.

LeonoraFlorence · 28/02/2024 19:48

So much. Can’t keep my DDs going on fruit and veg. We do an online shop but I definitely find myself in Tesco or Sainsburys daily topping up on fresh fruit and veg. We go through so many punnets of strawberries/rapsberries/blueberries/grapes and all the rest!

Trickofthetrade · 28/02/2024 19:53

Heythereorangehead · 28/02/2024 17:14

I’m getting nowhere near the same amount I used to
Are frozen berries as good for you as fresh ones, do you just defrost and eat?

Every Sunday I throw a bag of frozen berries into a saucepan with the juice of an orange and a little honey . Then simmer for about half an hour. I use this compote throughout the week for breakfast on natural yogurt with nuts and seeds .

Meadowfinch · 28/02/2024 19:58

This week about £10

Leeks £1
three bags satsumas £3
2 tubs cherry tomatoes £2
Broccoli 70p
5 bananas 69p
6 pears 89p
Cucumber 75p
beetroot 68p

I already had potatoes, onions, garlic, carrots, spring onions, lettuce, lemon, swede, frozen peas, sweetcorn, celery, mushrooms & spinach. Plus lentils, kidney beans, tinned tomatoes, cannellini beans, bottled blackberries. I have sultanas and hazel nuts as snacks.

I aim for 30 different veg a week, and usually get fairly close.

NerdWhoEatsMedlar · 28/02/2024 20:11

My list comes to just under £20

Thighdentitycrisis · 28/02/2024 20:26

I eat mostly fruit and vegetables and low carbs so haven’t cut back. I have noticed my spending going up again recently though and put it down to going shopping more often and buying stuff I don’t need each time . I think it’s still possible to get enough fresh produce if I cut down on alcohol and junk food like crisps and chocolate

today I’ve eaten a tangerine, banana, apple, avocado, through the day. Dinner was grated carrots, sprouted beans, greens, a stew made with peppers, lentil, fish and tomato. I’ll

Today I did a top up shop and bought 2 bananas, 5 blood oranges, broccoli, kale, flat mushrooms, oatcakes. Cookies (reduced). Cranberry juice. That cost £6.75 using the special offers. I need that much every few days though
