To be flabbergasted by Big Car woman's behaviour?

Yes, another Big Car rant.

I was driving out of school car park this morning. Suddenly a big thud and I realise someone has hit me.

I get out to take a look and the culprit gets out, and says "It's not my fault, I can't see out of the back of my car."

So I inspect the damage, decide as it's only a small scrape I will be generous, but do say to her, "I don't think it's wise to drive a car that you admit you can't see out of."

She lets rip at me, saying that she had the decency to stop, that she apologised, and how dare I say she should not drive her car.

so I say, "But you could have hit a child. You can't start reversing a car and have no idea what's behind you."

So she says, "Have you never bumped into anyone?"

My eyes goggled out of my head. Of course I have never knocked anyone down! I said as much, and she said, "Well, good for you, but most people have knocked into someone."

Aaaagggghhh - this person is on the road, ready to reverse into a child near you.

And SHE is the one who storms off saying what a rude person I am. I'm not being unreasonable, am I?

YANBU

That is so dangerous

PotPourri · 25/03/2008 10:52

YANBU. Silly cow. If you feel really strongly, report her for dangerous driving

winebeforepearls · 25/03/2008 10:53

YANBU, and her reaction sounds as if she knows perfectly well she's in the wrong.

TheArmadillo · 25/03/2008 10:54

YANBU

wilbur · 25/03/2008 10:55

I thought all those big cars had reversing beepers and flashing sensor lights everywhere like the Millennium Falcon. She sounds like a nightmare!

Lilymaid · 25/03/2008 10:55

If you have her car number you must report her. It is her fault. Also let her know that you are claiming on your insurance. Sometimes what seems like nothing on first inspection turns out to be worse.

fircone · 25/03/2008 10:56

I'm the sort of person who always feels in the wrong. I am still frazzled by the experience.

I had a row with someone else a few months ago, again in the school car park, because a woman reversed into a crowd of children coming out of the school gate. She airily said, "I can't see out." What is this excuse?

If they can't see out the back they shouldn't be reversing, esp. in a school car park!

Our old school always insisted that parents reversed into parking places (before the kids came out), then they didn't have to reverse out.

Taweret · 25/03/2008 11:02

Fircone, report her to the police.

fircone · 25/03/2008 11:03

Thanks for all your comments - I feel vindicated!

The trouble is that I am going to have to do the school run in disguise now as this woman is a Queen Bee type and I shall be shunned even more than usual.

YANBU I can't believe she didn't understand how wrong it was to reverse without being able to see

MrsBadger · 25/03/2008 11:04

not being able to see out of the back windscreen is not actually a problem (cf transit vans etc)

driving as though there's no-one behind you just because you can't see if there is is a problem

YANBU

The driving test should involve an iq test too

caykon · 25/03/2008 11:22

I drive a big 4 x 4 and admit it is hard to see out the back window at times there are blind spots, but thats why there are wing mirrors. You use them like van drivers do, you never just think sod it and reverse.

Its maddening and people wonder why 4 x 4 drivers get such a bad reputation.

I would report her.

Twiglett · 25/03/2008 11:24

you need to make sure as many people as possible at the school gates know that she said she 'can't see when reversing'

as many as possible

perpetualworrier · 25/03/2008 11:40

What everyine else said, plus I'd be wary of saying Oh it's just a sctatch. DH reversed into a lamp post (I didn't laugh much). The damage didn't look bad, but it cost over £700 to fix.

waffletrees · 25/03/2008 12:10

you need to report this woman and quick. What if she does hit a child you will never be able to forgive yourself.

YANBU!

Heathcliffscathy · 25/03/2008 12:12

i'm as flabberghasted as you. wtf? have you never run someone over??????

AeroglisseurPleinDesAuguilles · 25/03/2008 12:17

I can't believe that anyone would drive a car they can't see out of properly!!! I saw a prog on TV where they blindfolded a 4x4 driver, lined 10 kids up behind his car, took off the blindfold and asked him what he could see in his rearview mirror. He could just see the top of the last kid's head!

LittleBella · 25/03/2008 12:17

She's bonkers.

But yes YABU to be flabbergasted. This sort of shit behaviour from people with cars designed to elbow everyone else off the road, is quite normal. As long as these cars are being manufactured and driven, get used to it, it's the future.

Bouncingturtle · 25/03/2008 12:20

"Well, good for you, but most people have knocked into someone."

Err no actually I don't think this is the case. Stupid cow - report her before she kills somebody. I regularly drive big cars and manage not to hit anyone!!

YANBU!!

Scampmum · 25/03/2008 12:24

That is horrifying. I cannot understand this attitude. Once (as a cyclist, and yes, I was wearing lycra ) some stupid bitch opened her door on me and I only avoided really serious injury by slamming on my brakes. I was (in the circumstances) relatively controlled and said 'you should really look before you open the car door' and she said 'yes, well, we should all do a lot of things'. Not even a single word of apology! I don't think I've ever been so angry. Irritatingly I just stood there with my mouth flapping open and shut rather than following her as she scuttled into her office.

And what's with the 'big old me, I actually stopped'? It's ILLEGAL not to. Big wow, you obeyed the law. Tell me the school and I'll go and punch her for you.

Scampmum · 25/03/2008 12:25

(YANBU, in case that wasn't clear...)

Psychomum5 · 25/03/2008 12:30

erm.......I know you ;et her off, as by you own admission it was just a 'small scrape', but this should be reported!

and I am meaning police reported too, as she is clearly a danger, and this could be considered dangerous driving surely????

it is dangerous to drive without adequate vision, and even more when you are small minded enough too to think it is not your fault because you can't see.

AND......what if tomorrow you park by her, she reverses, and hits your child as he/she is getting into the car????

what if she hits a toddler???

what if she reverses into a pram with a newborn????

if this happened, and you had reported it, then someone else could be held laible for not stopping her from driving, but if she does it and you haven't reported her, than could you forgive yourself?????
