To be flabbergasted by Big Car woman's behaviour?

Yes, another Big Car rant.

I was driving out of school car park this morning. Suddenly a big thud and I realise someone has hit me.

I get out to take a look and the culprit gets out, and says "It's not my fault, I can't see out of the back of my car."

So I inspect the damage, decide as it's only a small scrape I will be generous, but do say to her, "I don't think it's wise to drive a car that you admit you can't see out of."

She lets rip at me, saying that she had the decency to stop, that she apologised, and how dare I say she should not drive her car.

so I say, "But you could have hit a child. You can't start reversing a car and have no idea what's behind you."

So she says, "Have you never bumped into anyone?"

My eyes goggled out of my head. Of course I have never knocked anyone down! I said as much, and she said, "Well, good for you, but most people have knocked into someone."

Aaaagggghhh - this person is on the road, ready to reverse into a child near you.

And SHE is the one who storms off saying what a rude person I am. I'm not being unreasonable, am I?

I'm with psychomum, what if she runs a child down. I'd report her to the police for sure,

mistlethrush · 25/03/2008 12:33

Report her to the school and get her banned from parking in the school car park - she is clearly not safe to do so, and you don't want it to be your, or indeed, any one else's dcs that she knocks into next time. (YANBU)

I would be on the phone to my insurance company if someone spoke to me like that after they had caused a collision! Silly cow.

tjacksonpfc · 25/03/2008 12:39

what a nightmare but am i the only person who is still shocked that parents can park in school still our school car park is for staff and deliverys only thus minimising the maount of cars moving in school starting and finishing hours as most staff are there before kids and leave well after them. it makes it safer all round for the kids

one thing in your favour......you will be seeing her again and so can get her number plate making reporting it easier.

and in fact, you can still report this to your insurence company, even tho as the scene you said not to worry, as you can say she scared you too much to want to continue anything there and then.

if you ring your insurence co up and give them her number plate details, they could find out her detials by ringing the DVLA, and so then write to her asking for her insurence details.

YANBU in any way, but I do feel that if you let this go, then you are being unreasonable for not reporting IYGWIM. And I mean that in a simpathetic way as you weren;t to know how she would turn out when you first said to let it go.

ignore typos.......brain dead today

I know it is spelled insurance, and sympathetic.......honest guv

IMHO, from the OP's desription she sounds like she was "driving without due care and attention" which I think is a police phrase used to inflict a prosecution or penalty point at the very least.

I would make the school aware of the potential hazard so that they can warn parents to take care.

fircone · 25/03/2008 12:46

well, it's not technically the school car park, but the council-owned one next door, although everyone calls it the school car park.

Consequently the school has no control over the (wild) driving that goes on in there, but the police have been there fairly frequently recently which shows just what sort of drivers frequent it. I find it astounding that so many people display such total arrogance and disregard for anyone else. They are in charge of a lethal piece of machinery, but for some reason many drivers seem utterly oblivious to this fact.
